DirectX 9

Post by Wulfran »

I have seen some conversations about people using this and running it, some encountering problems, some not. I am not an IT person and have a limited understanding of a lot of the "technical" PC stuff, so the question to the gurus out there. EQ is probably the most demanding thing I run on my PC (the other games and shit like MS Office don't really tax my system like EQ does).

Is it worth it to update to DX9.0? What does it do? And what issues will I be likely to encounter with EQ and other games/programs?

it won't help EQ at all until/if SOE starts coding for it in patches (in which case it will be required).

DX9 messed up my friend's sound card, and also managed to drop his joystick (MS sidewinder). After updating sound card and joystick drivers, everything was happy again.

Whenever installing a DirectX upgrade it is always wise to make sure you are running the latest and greatest drivers for all of your hardware. And it usually isn't a bad idea to reinstall sound and video after installing DirectX.

On a new system, sure-throw it on. If your system is currently working (ie running EQ) no need to bother because it won't make it better and potentially worse.

Like Kyou said, it wont make a bit of diffrence in EQ untill SoE starts patching with DX9 code. If your playing other games it may help them if they are new enough or have DX9 patches applyed to them. BUT make sure you update your video card and sound card drivers if you do go to DX9, if not it could cause some serious issues.

how many times do ppl need to get this pounded in ......when you d/l a new dx or open gl you must d/l all new plug in play drivers. Everytime since dx 5 have I heard this "dx yadda messed up my (x)card or my so and so device doesn't work now". If it doesn't work download the new drivers from the manufacturer site it's pretty easy. A new dx will always be coming it's technology it upgrades continuously. I had to vent that been building up for a while. I just had to explain to a friend who shouldn't be trying to build a pc why his lan card doesn't work....cause his frank and bean ass didn't run the driver cd for his new motherboard.

I installed DX9.0a and updated my vid card drivers(latest from nVidia).

May just be my imagination but installign these drivers and DX9.0a seemed to help with some of the graphics in EQ as far as video lag goes.

As far as I understand it, there are a couple of optimizations in DX 9.0. But you really don't need to upgrade and probably won't for a while, as DX 9.0 is not a very big change from DX 8. Not only that but there are only like 2 cards (I'm not even sure if it's two, I think it's only the Radeon 9700, and 9800) Possibly the GeForce Fx, that fully support DirectX 9.0 in hardware. Don't expect games to start requiring 9.0 for a little while.
