I've got 99 problems and I'm not dealing with any of them - Lay-Z
Since its beginnings in the mid-1990s, the British group, Mandalay, has experienced a number of misunderstandings. In its infancy, Mandalay was haphazardly thrown into the then popular category of Trip Hop, and forgotten. Then, their first album, Empathy (released in 1998), turned up in Russia mislabeled as Portishead's album, Pearl
Even after their next album, Instinct, was released in 2000, their hauntingly beautiful music remained virtually unattainable in North America. Finally, in Spring 2001, they released Solace, a compilation of some of their most successful songs from their previous albums, to the eagerly awaiting fans on this side of the Atlantic. And ever the fan-friendly group, Mandalay treated their North American fans with a special surprise, a limited-edition bonus CD with remixes of their best works, such as by Nitin Sawhney, Charlie May, Alex Reece, and Cevin Fisher.
So who is this group who has been described as Madonna's favorite band? Who is the face behind the haunting vibrato who's song penetrates deep? And the face behind the masterpieces that comprise Empathy, Instinct, and Solace, as well as the numerous individual songs affectionately labeled "B-sides" the hard-to-find side B songs in their numerous singles albums who's beauty may surpass even the magic of Mandalay's other pieces?
The wonder which is called Mandalay began in the mid-nineties when instrumentalist Saul Freeman joined forces with vocalist Nicola Hitchcock. The result was a deeply satisfying genre of music that remains difficult to categorize: part pop, part electronic, part jazz, part rock... A surprising mix of textures and colours that move your mind, lyrics that move your heart, and of a fragile yet strong vibrato that moves your soul. An experience that will both ground you and uplift you.
Nicola and Saul remain at one time generous and human to fans and to their music, yet also unfathomable and enigmatic. But regardless, one listen to Empathy, Instinct, or Solace will bring you closer to them, and closer to yourself.
