Girl baffles teacher with SMS essay

LONDON (Reuters) - An English essay written by a teenager in text messaging short-hand has reignited concern among teachers that literacy standards are under threat.
The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on Monday that the 13-year-old's teacher could not decipher what the youngster had written.

"I could not believe what I was seeing. The page was riddled with hieroglyphics, many of which I simply could not translate," the teacher told the newspaper.

The teenager's essay which caused the problem began:

"My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we used 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3 :- kids FTF. ILNY, it's a gr8 plc."

In translation:

"My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York. It's a great place."

Judith Gillespie, of the Scottish Parent Teacher Council, told the newspaper a decline in grammar and written English was partly linked to the text messaging craze.

"Pupils think orally and write phonetically," she said.

heh, I hate that d00d-speak so much that I absolutely refuse to assist anyone that sends me /tells in game and types like that...

"cn u come to PoD n rez plz, I pay plz" doesn't even warrant my attention.

I like to see:
"Excuse me please, if you're not busy could you possibly come to PoD and rez my corpse at the graveyard? I'll give you 100pp for your trouble"

or

"If your not busy, could you rez my corpse at the tower to skyshrine? I'll give you 100pp, and I'll port you in, and then port you to anywhere else you'd like to go afterwards"

I've noticed that there aren't any of my guildies that type like that, at least not in guild chat... occasional minimized shorthand is acceptable I guess, but not your entire written vocabulary...

As a cleric/enchanter when I played...I would not help anyone who didn't have the decency to speak to me in a manner I could comprehend.

I always felt if they couldn't take the time to type the word "you" and choose to skip a few letters and make it spelled "u" that I would simply elimintae some keystrokes of my own by not responding to the fag.

Was reading reviews of cell phones and saw this one that was kinda funny:

I am using the samsung a460, I LOVE IT"

I don't understand how people can blame the phone for bad reception when it's the phone company that provide bad service, I am with bell and I am getting crystal crisp sounds, I calls never ever drop, even when I have no bars for signals, it's clear sound, I love the design ,and my phone last pretty long, and doesn't get hot, maybe it gets a litle warm but doesn't burn up my face, maybe u people juss have an acne pizza face and are sensitive to a lil warmth, lol, I don't know what u people are saying, but my phone and service and quality tops them all, one thing I am disappointed, the bell a460 don't have games...no prob, it's a great phone STILL

It annoys me to no end that cellular service providers on the West Coast suck fat dick. I've been stuck with AT&T for the last 3 years, because I can't change providers without changing my phone number -- and that would be a big fucking hassle.

So I'm stuck with what is easily the worst cell phone service on Earth in AT&T. I can't even get reception a block away from where I purchased my phone. I'm constantly having to pace around and hold the phone in weird directions during conversations, just to ensure that service doesn't cut out on me. I find myself having to shout on the phone, just to get people to hear me. It's obnoxious to the Nth degree.

I hope you people in other parts of the map have better local providers.

I live in Tennessee and we have a variety of providers... Cingular, At&t, Verizon. I, sticking with what my parents have used, chose cingular. I bought the phone inside a Wal-mart, probably my first problem, I don't get service anywhere near where I bought it.

The first couple of months after I got the phone Cingular told me that they were putting up new towers. About a month after I found this out, I get told by a close friend that sure towers were up, but they weren't recieving any signal from Cingular.

So basically unless I am in the town of my college, I get shit for service. Someone calls me, after one ring it drops the connection and directs them to my voicemail. People call my number and get someone elses phone.

Oh well, to sum it up... Cingular swallows regurgitated pig vomit in my home town.

AT&T definitely sucks, and Cingular is supposed to suck even worse. The only good provider (and by "good" I mean "almost acceptable") is Verizon, from what I've been told.

Sprint has great packages, but their actual service sucks. Lot of problems with getting dropped on calls for no apparent reason.

Depends where you live Kilmoll. I get no dropped calls in the Phoenix Metro area for the most part and, more importantly, the signal strength is very strong at my home and work. I don't care about customer service. I pay my bills on the website and make changes to my service there as well.

I love the this package:

-500 Anytime Minutes (about 25 minutes a day)
-Unlimited Minutes 9pm-7am M-F, All Weekend is unlimited as well
-Long Distance Included on all calls.
$45.00

Works great for my needs.

I have Cingular and haven't had a single problem with it. I got it two years ago, found a great package and have been happy with it ever since. The great thing is that it won't charge you for roaming anywhere in your state. (That is on the basic teir, not that fancy nationwide thing)

my wife has Sprint. it is the worst service going. total utter shit.

maybe if they would focus more on call infrastructure and less on jamming that infrastructure with bitmap images from their stupid phone cams, they might make some money.

To an extent, Sprint sucks everywhere IMO. Verizon is only good in a few major metro areas.

I've had AT&T for 4 years now and it's been great. The only problems I've had were in Palo Alto and Sunnyvale CA. I helped on the buildout for them in San Diego, they've got a really nice network there :)

It all comes down to agreements between carriers for quality/type of service your going to get. Supposedly some will bump you to analog to eat your batteries and make you dislike your carrier/phone.

That reminds me.. Someone tell Verizon those goddamn commercials aren't really funny or cute anymore. The 'Can you hear me now?' guy has outlived his 15 minutes.

Here in FL both AT&T and Cingular have been nothing but great for me. It's really luck of the draw based on where you live I believe.

Someone should do a show where they take annoying people in commercials and put them in a ring like the UFC and fight to the death. The Verizon guy vs. Alf would be a good undercard to the main event of Carrot Top vs. Jarred from Subway.

I dont want to talk to you when im at home, why the fuck would I want to talk to you when im out having fun?

I love watching people at resturants sitting at the table with others while on a cell, fucking rude. An acquitance was on his cell while we all were at the theatre I ripped it out of his hand and through it toward the exit, he never came back. If I notice anyone im with has a cell, I tell them to turn it off if we are going to go out.

I can't stand assholes who talk on their cell during movies. It's bad enough when those fuckers forget to turn their cell phones off before the movie, and we're all interrupted by a ring or two. It's another thing altogether when an idiot *answers* his fucking phone in mid-movie, and starts yakking away. I will assault the next unlucky asshole who tries to carry on a cell conversation during my movie.

Knock on wood, but I have never heard anyone talk on a cell phone while at a movie. Though I'm sure my reaction would not be nice.
