I was born and raised in Michigan, but moved to Arkansas at the impressionable age of 19 and lived there for almost 6 years, eventually moving back to Michigan. I call it either pop or coke without consciously thinking about it. The 2 are interchangable to me.

However, when I first lived in Arkansas, I learned to ask specifically for a Coca-Cola, or else I would end up with anything from Dr. Pepper to Root Beer.

I had this same discussion with my girlfriend. She is a recent transplant from Michigan and calls it Pop. I, being a native californian, call it Coke, or use the name for the actual drink. (I drink OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of Dr Pepper so I dont want a coke when I want a pepper.)
I think it breaks down to Midwest = Pop, East = Soda, South = Coke. The West is pretty much made up of transplants from different areas so we have pockets of Pop, Soda, and Coke.

Cool site. I call it Soda. Here is what I tell my buddy who calls it Pop.
If you add 'o' to Soda you get Sooda. If you add 'o' to Pop you get Poop.

My grandfather called it soda water. I always called it pop growing up. Once I moved to Wisconsin, people looked at me funny so I started calling it soda.

I'll see if I can get a hold of my mom later on tonight. It would have been in the Port Moody / Port Coquitlam / Coquitlam area (it's part of the greater Vancouver area, in BC).

I was pretty stoked (It was Xmas 2001). I sucked back a good 6 bottles out of excitement, though I regretted it afterwards, heh. Every christmas my mom used to buy 2 to 3 of the 24 cases of the pop. I miss you oh great and mighty Pop Shoppee!

EDIT: Just did a quick search of the net

Surrey Bottle Depot & Pop Shoppe 10716 135a St. Surrey, BC. (604) 588-1915

Port Moody One-Stop Market & Bottle Depot 2409 Clarke St. Port Moody, BC. (604) 937-0746 (This one used to be a Pop Shoppe, not sure anymore, been a few years since I was last there, used to buy all our pop shoppe stuff from them!)

I'll add more as I find them.

I call it soda and im from wisconsin...the majority of people around here call it pop tho it seems....

Once in Highschool when we had German foreign exchange students I found a group of them outside the gym laughing and poiting at a sign that said "No Food or Pop in Gym" at first I just thought they were stoned but when I asked what was so funny they reveiled that pop in germany is slang for sex.

Heh....

The map is pretty accurate.

For example in St. Louis, almost everyone here calls it "Soda" when many in Chicago call it "Pop".

Pretty interesting poll :)

Pop. Well, pop or the specific name. Like I might ask for a Coke.. but only if it's actually Coke! Crazy people who call all softdrinks Coke scare me! ;) It's like playing roulette with cans.

I don't think I could ever adjust to calling it soda. It sounds very... what's the word I'm looking for... awkward, old-fashioned, stuffy, lame, formal... I could go on.

Only carbonated ones. . .hence "fizzy pop". 'Pop' like bubbles. . .

In the South East, every restaurant that has an exclusive deal with Pepsi (Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, etc..) goes something like this...

"And what would you like to drink with that sir?"

"A coke please"

"we only have Pepsi"

"yeah yeah, a coke is fine...."

Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Long John Silvers, KFC, A&W are all owned by Tricon who have a contractl with Pepsico that they only sell thier products.

The same as McDonalds with CocaCola.

Actually Pizza hut, KFC, and Taco Bell used to be owned by pepsi a while back and they split off, which explains the close ties. My ex-step-father worked closely with some of the higher pepsi guys back then.

I don't know if A&W or Long John Silvers were part of pepsi back then or not, I know they had a burger place called Hot & Now, but it wasnt doing so hot.

Anyway....

I grew up in Michigan where we called it "pop" then I moved to Conneticut where everyone looked at me like a freak and asked me what I was talkign about...they called it "soda" so I switched names.....then I moved down to Cincinatti where people called it "coke" usually...Atlanta called it "coke" also.

So the map is pretty accurate except it says the pop region extends slightly lower then it actually does, I know Dayton, Ohio liked to call it Pop...I think people in Cincinatti call it Pop too...but the people on the other side of the river here call it coke....and they have us down as pop.

I still call it soda, because it sounded kinda weird calling it pop or coke after I called it soda. Maybe I'll just get all crazy and call them soft drinks. Now some of my friends or family might say "you call it coke asshole!" which is semi-true...when people ask if I have anythign to drink besides beer I do say "I have some cokes in the garage" but that's because it's Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke.....with maybe a case of mountain dew thrown in. But for the most part it is actually coke of some sort...if I had pepsi products in the garage or it was a wider assortment I would call them soda.

I think of baking soda, or soda water when I hear soda. It's pop for me all the way, off the top of my head the only thing more irritating than hearing pop called soda, is when im in the south and some country bumpkin at a gas station or whatever asks me if I want a "sack".... It's a bag goddamnit not a sack.
