Reparations for _X_

Post by Aabidano »

Be it slavery, genocide, what have you.

Should you be held financially or otherwise responsible for your ancestors actions? I'm talking a generation (60 years) after the fact, not recent events/actions.

What about descendants of post X immigrants who make up a significant portion of the population? Should they be held liable too?

Another topic got me thinking and didn't want to derail it further.

Pisses me off, even the apologies politicians make 100 years after the fact. You can't apologize (which presumes the ability to be forgiven) for something you didn't do.

I vote yes! Starting with immediate deportation to their ancestral lands. Cash reparations to follow!

What about reparations by the government for genocide on the native americans? While I don't really stand on either side of the fence, the Bureau of Indian Affairs have done a horrendous job in managing the money promised to the Indians (Native Americans for the PC). It's one thing to say, "Yeah. We messed up. Here's your cut of the money from the land we took from you." And then lose all records of it, and then have the audacity to go to the supreme court and disobey a direct order to account for the money. It's not so much the reparations I have issue with, but if you're going to agree to do something then do it. I find it ironic the people who have been on this continent the longest are the worst off for it.

I answered no as soon as I got up off the floor.

You see, I fell out of my chair laughing at the concept.

My immediate reaction is no but you have to look at the bigger picture instead of a personal perspective. Are we being held responsible for the debt accrued generations ago? Well yeah, significant portions of my taxes are covering the interest on that debt.

So the question I have to ask is if the repercussions of financial decisions are passed on from generation to generation why would the responsibilities of other decisions by a society not be?

You're welcome to give it a shot if you like.

After a merry round-robin of lawsuits, we will all be poorer.

We will start witht he black community, then move to the american indian. After that we can discuss the chinese immigrants, the irish, the poles......

It's over. Let's move forward, not back.

So, since I'm Scotch and English, would I have to pay myself reparations?

Ok, I'd like my money because I am scarred for life from:

The Babylonian enslavement and torture of non Babylonians.
The Egyptian enslavement and torture of non Egyptians.
The Roman Empire.
The rise of the Catholic church.
The destruction of the Druidic religions.
The enslavement of Scots at the hands of the English.
The Spanish Inquisition.
The 100 years war.
The Scots/English that died in the revolutionary war.
The potato famine.
Scotch stereotyping in America.
Scots/English that died in the Civil War
Scots/English that died moving West.
World War 1
World War 2
Margaret Thatcher

Wow.. I'm riding high for life.

OR - We can take responsibility for our decisions as a human race. Live up to our mistakes. Fix the problem at the root of the problem, and move on. I don't like what happend to my people over the last couple thousand years, but it's made me who I am today, and I will do everything I can to make sure that the mistakes of the past are not relived on my generation, or any future generations. That is the right that was given to me by the suffering of my ancestors, and my responsibility to my progeny.

Buck up.

My wife and I have discussed this topic before, and we both agree that if for some reason this goes through, and the government sends us a check, we will send it back. It's a slap in the face. You'd think most blacks would be for it, quite the contrary. I have yet to hear someone say they would accept the money. I am only counting face to face conversations, not what has been preached on TV. There is not a race on the face of the earth that has not been enslaved at one point or another. It's rediculous. We can stand on our own two feet, trust me, I can make it in todays world without a handout and so can my other brothers and sisters of color.

I don't see anything wrong in particular with acknowledging some of the less savoury dealings of our ancestors and maybe making an official apology along the lines of "I'm sorry our ancestors treatd your ancestors as cattle and sold them into slavery for profit" or "I'm sorry our ancestors lied and stole all your land while brutalizing and hunting your ancestors to near extinction".

But paying is bullshit and none of these issues is as clear cut as people make out anyway (ie Slavery - a great portion of slaves sold in west africa were sold by native african slavers who had captured/killed/defeated their own countrymen in order to sell them - who pays in this case?).

People calling for reparations are too damn lazy to earn their own money so they think they can get it from the government. They are too stupid to realize that you aren't taking money from the government. You are taking money from your neighbors.

Native Americans need to get over the fact that they are a conquered peoples. It is sad they are losing their history but sheesh it isn't the first time that shit has happened. I find it racist that they let native Americans have casinos but bar owners can't have a nickel machine or two.

They did a story here in Minnesota on one Indian tribe here. Where each member of the tribe recieves 1 millon Dollars a year( estimate) in casino profits but the State and National Govts. still fork out over 13 millon dollars a year in aid.

But of course everyweek I see one of these in the local paper and get a chuckle
