Killzone 3
Beta opens to everyone today. Like I didn't have enough to play already! I can say with a fair amount of confidence most of my play time between now and Feb. 14th is going to be spent playing this.

Re: Killzone 3
A few friends and I have been playing this a bit.
THE BAD:
I will point out the most obvious frustration first - the matchmaking fucking blows right now. I am hoping this is because they are trying to gauge the server load they will have and don't have all their infrastructure in place yet, but I'm not sure why you would start on the low end for a game like this. There are times when we have to try for 30 minutes just to get into the matchmaking menu to be able to squad up and search for a match. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming this will be straightened out for release, as I don't recall having any of these types of issues with the first two games.
I will continue on with the other negatives I've seen so far, since I started on that note.
The classes seem fucked up. The classes from the second game needed absolutely no tweaking, the talents and weapons were all placed where they should be. For some reason they didn't see it this way, and jumbled a bunch of shit around, for example, the only class I can see a assault rifle being a option to use is marksman. In Killzone, a marksman always has been, and should still be a sniper, and their talents should be spot & mark, and camo. There is absolutely no reason for them to have an assault rifle. Furthermore, I should be able to start with an assault rifle as my default weapon as one of the infantry classes, I shouldn't be stuck with a shotty or a shitty smg.
They have made the movement in the game feel much more like other shooters, and have made the feel of the melee the same. I don't like this, but I saw it coming. The mainstream crowd didn't like that it didn't control like CoD and didn't want to play it for this reason. I say fuck em... Why can't the publishers leave one good franchise alone, and let the developers make the game the way they want to, for their core audience, instead of having to dumb it down so that it'll sell 50 bajillion copies. Isn't it enough that they've all but extinct the true jrpg's for this same reason?
There are only two control schemes, as opposed to the 6-8 that were in the second game, and neither of them is what I want. I hope there are more available in the full release, which I'm sure there will be. The games are also smaller I think the biggest games still have 6 less per team than the second game, which I really don't like, the huge maps and spread out fights are what makes this game, imo.
All that said, I still thoroughly enjoy the game and have been having fun playing it, I just hope they decide to change some of those things before release/with patches.
THE GOOD:
The hit detection has been vastly improved over the second game. People go down when they should with any gun I've used, which was one of my bigger complaints about the second game.
The map design is still top notch, I'd argue that GG is the best out there at building balanced maps that are large and spread out the action so there isn't one little spot on the entire damn map that people gravitate to (I'm looking at you, sword base lift room in Halo Reach).
Graphics are great, sound is awesome. The propaganda and other sounds that echo through the streets and buildings in Killzone really adds a layer to it that I don't really feel with other games.
There is just something about these games that I really like, and I have a feeling I'll be sinking a shit ton of time into this one just like I did the second game. Once it's released, I can fairly safely say I won't be playing Halo anymore, and I can tell you for damn sure I won't be playing Call of Annoyingteenagersandnoteamwork anymore.
I'll reserve my final judgment for the final game to see how the rest of the maps and features are, not to mention the campaign, but so far I'd say if you're looking for a shooter that's a little different, or you're a fan of the series, don't skip this game.

Re: Killzone 3
I downloaded the beta to actually make use of my Playstation Move and I kinda wish I had stuck to the DualShock.
The Move implementation here is pure gimmick. Move with the normal d-stick, turn and aim with the move. Grenades and zoom in the controller, shooting on the Move.
The game itself however seemed solid. I'm going to have to try it with the controller though.

Re: Killzone 3
I decided to get the special edition of this. I feel like someone should kick my ass for paying $130 for a game that comes with a toy helmet, but the real reason I'm buying it is for the map pack (of Killzone 2 maps) and you get double exp for the first 24 hours (not sure if this is the first 24 hours the game is out, or playtime), and all the weapons and abilities and stuff are unlocked for you I believe.
Me and two of my buddies from work, and potentially a few more are going to be playing this all night tonight, and likely a lot in the coming weeks, so if any of you want to join up send me a message.

Re: Killzone 3
Played the shit out of this. So, about the negatives I listed above.
The matchmaking is fixed, for the most part. There were actually one or two times where each person I was playing with had their PS3 completely freeze up and had to restart it. Other than that we didn't really have any issues getting into games as a squad.
I'm still not thrilled about some of the changes in the classes, but I've gotten used to it. I've been playing as a marksman, and aside from my thinking it's stupid to have the sniper class be the only one with access to an assault rifle, it seems to be a bit unbalanced to let someone at higher rank have two primary weapons (sniper and assault rifle). Speaking of unbalanced weapons, the shotgun's range needs to be reduced... Getting one shot killed by a shotgun from 100 feet away is ridiculous.
The control schemes aren't that bad, and you can further customize them a bit in the advanced menu for the controller.
More of the GOOD!
The maps in this game are fucking awesome. I've said it before and I'll say it again, these guys are better at map design and balancing than anyone else. Add on top of that how amazing the visuals are, and it's really awesome to just run around getting to know the maps.
The other thing I can say for the Killzone games, is the people that play them tend to be some of the best I've came across when it comes to communicating and working as a team. I think I played maybe 2 games all night last night where people weren't actively communicating about everything throughout the game.
This game is awesome, more of you should go get it, I need more targets

Shooter of the year!
And hey, I bought the collectors edition for the bonus exp! A friend of mine and I are ultra competitive with who can rank up fastest, etc, so I wanted a little head start, haha!
Better watch out, might get spit on

Anyone playing this? Me and two friends play pretty much every day, but could use a couple more people that know how to play on a team.

I will get it eventually, but not in the foreseeable future. I'm waiting for 25$ or under, so probably within the next 6 months.

Re: Killzone 3
Not to rub it in or anything, but the special edition of this game was on sale on Amazon for $39.99 on Sunday. Only 60% of them sold by the time the sale was over. I bought one. I'll play it sometime soon. I should probably finish the second one first!Funkmasterr wrote:I feel like someone should kick my ass for paying $130 for a game that comes with a toy helmet, but the real reason I'm buying it is for the map pack (of Killzone 2 maps) and you get double exp for the first 24 hours (not sure if this is the first 24 hours the game is out, or playtime), and all the weapons and abilities and stuff are unlocked for you I believe
