Lifeforce (1985)

Post by Fairweather Pure »

This movie is a mish-mash of genres that sounds good on paper, but misses the mark when all is said and done.

A spacecraft full of scientists sent to explore Haley's Comet find an alien ship in it's cone. They board it and bring back 3 space fucking vampires. Once on earth, these vampires suck the lifeforce out of people and send it up to the mothership, which orbits earth. The only surviving member of the original space crew holds the key to haulting the extinction of the human race.

Mathilda May plays the lead vampire chick and she is "full frontal" nude in almost every scene. This was the highlight of the movie and almost worth the price of admission. This woman was hot, hot, hot. The rest of the movie is kind of "meh". The special effects do not hold up too well, which makes pretty much every action scene cringe worthy. Still, there are some bright spots in the film of you look hard enough. Space Vampires and zombies are a pretty cool concept.

Oh yeah, Patrick Stewart is in this. At one point he says "Whatever you say, Commander" to a guy and it's kind of funny seeing as this was years before Star Trek TNG. Come to think of it, in the next scene, he was in a wheelchair ala Professor X...

The movie was decent in 1985, but in 2009 it's not that good. I give it a 5/10. Matilda May's 80's bush, nice ass, and perfect rack raised the movie 2 full points.

I've always liked this movie a lot for some reason (and not just the gratuitous nudity during the first part). The film has its problems, but I dig it anyway. I don't think it's fair to judge mid-80's low-budget special effects by today's standards. I rewatched this a year ago or so, and afterward I kept thinking about what a great candidate this story is for a modern remake.

That is an interesting opinion, but I cannot help but to disagree! Special effects should always be judged on how well they hold up, especially if they are used so much in a film. Even for the time, Lifeforce did not have very good special effects (except for the helicopter scene!). Star Wars was released in 1977 and it still holds up well today. Heck, go back to the dawn of cinema and you have movies like Nosferatu (1922) and Metropolis (1927) that still hold up really well, and those were 60 years before Lifeforce! The studio has to do the best it can with it's budget. In many cases with really bad effects, they basically over reached and it has a noticeable impact on the overall quality of the movie.

The best special effects laden films are the ones that hold up well, so that is why I make it a point to express my opinion if they have held up well or not. You'll notice I do this in pretty much all my reviews of older movies. Especially if the effects were noticeably good or bad.

However, I definitely agree with you about a remake. Done with todays effects and a little fine tuning to the story and it has the potential to be pretty good!

The only thing I remember about this movie are the fucking magnificent jugs the alien vampire chick had. AFK2FAP
