NPD / Sales discussion

Post by Aslanna »

Instead of someone posting sales numbers in new threads every month it might be better to just keep it all in one place. Feel free to place non-NPD numbers as well (miir) such as Japan weekly sales.

Anyway.. Here's for July 2010!
Top Ten U.S. Console Games - Reporting July 4 to July 31, 2010

1. NCAA Football 11 (Xbox 360) - 368.0K
2. NCAA Football 11 (PS3) - 298.8K
3. Crackdown 2 (Xbox 360) - 208.8K
4. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) - 193.0K
5. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (NDS) - 141.7K
6. Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360)
7. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (Wii)
8. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (NDS)
9. New Super Mario Bros Wii (Wii)
10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360)

U.S. Hardware Sales - Reporting July 4 to July 31, 2010

1. Xbox 360: 443.5K (down 8.2K)
2. Nintendo DS: 398.4K (down 112.3K)
3. Nintendo Wii: 253.9K (down 168.6K)
4. PS3: 214.5K (down 90.3K)
5. PSP: 84.0K (down 37K)
It doesn't look like the PS3 (with no piracy!) is moving a lot of software at the moment. Better luck next month! It also looks like Sony needs to fake another "console shortage" so they can hype up some more demand on the hardware side of things.

While I'm here how about the first week of Aug over in Japan:
Hardware numbers (for the week of August 2 to 8, according to Media Create).

* PSP - 30,397
* PlayStation 3 - 28,630
* Nintendo DSi LL - 21,018
* Nintendo DSi - 18,318
* Wii - 18,238
* Xbox 360 - 5,639
* Nintendo DS Lite - 4,372
* PlayStation 2 - 1,524
* PSPgo - 708
Poor PSPgo isn't going so hot. Sony should just kill that thing. Even the 360 (and PS2) are outselling it. Speaking of 360 it seems like it does better each week. I wonder if it will ever hit 10k on a consistent basis. Probably not

Sony's aversion to price drops is really hurting them with the PSPGo.

Put it in line (or cheaper than) the normal PSP already.

I think they are already semi givimg up on the pspgo. There is a combo android phone/psp coming out, and if its similarly priced to the pspgo I can see them having much better luck.

Here's the tally for the week of August 9 to 15, straight from Media Create.

* PSP - 35,734
* PlayStation 3 - 33,057
* Nintendo DSi LL - 27,923
* Wii - 25,072
* Nintendo DSi - 24,850
* Xbox 360 - 5,065
* Nintendo DS Lite - 4,809
* PlayStation 2 - 1,675
* PSP go - 608
PS3 and 360 took a drop in sales. PSP (no-Go) is not doing too bad although the combined DS numbers are greater.

No doubt Microsoft is having another stellar year.

September will be another crazy month for them as well with Reach coming out too.

If you look at the worldwide numbers, the 360 and the Wii are both having poor years.
The biggest loser is the Wii and the PS3 has gained considerable ground on both.

Healthy sales for the 360 and PS3 will always be good to drive competition. Look for another price drop in the near future for both platforms. A ton of great titles coming out over the next couple months! Looks like Dead Rising 2 will be available on PS3 as well!

Guess we wont need this thread for anything anymore...
Effective October 14--the date the September NPD results are due--the NPD Group will remove monthly hardware unit sales figures from its monthly release. The retail evaluation will also remove unit sales figures from the "Top 5" selling titles for the month, opting to only list "Top 10 software at the title level."
The new, retail-only (Read: NPD Group does not report on digital distribution, game subscriptions, mobile games, rentals, used titles or social network games) sales tracking report will continue monthly releases; however, the group will also release a "total consumer spend report" on a quarterly basis.

According to a representative of the NPD Group, the change was made to "address the changing sales landscape as well as updates to NPD's corporate publishing policies." The change comes as quite a surprise, as the NPD Group was always a good indicator of the hardware sales landscape in the United States. The NPD Group states that it will "continue to support" companies that release "sales figures for their respective products."

This was done at the request of the hardware makers. At least the ones that aren't broadcasting their own numbers from the rooftops/twitter.
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/green ... -month-in/

Michael Pachter, not one to bow to demands from hardware makers as easily as the NPD folks, decided to fill in the blanks(with the NPD data his firm probably purchases).
It's a shame that there were no DS or PSP numbers.
