Flight Attendants

Post by Winnow »

Cool story.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/08/11/fl ... tml?hpt=C1
(CNN) -- It's safe to say air travelers are paying more attention -- and maybe giving a little more respect -- to flight attendants after the incident on a JetBlue flight that has mesmerized the country and put a new spotlight on the once-glamorous profession.

Crowded cabins, strict security and the lack of food and manners have affected flight attendants as much as passengers, but many fliers are just starting to realize their frustrations after Monday's altercation at New York's John F. Kennedy airport.

The details have already become legend.

Steven Slater, a JetBlue flight attendant, got into an argument with a passenger who was trying to remove a bag from the overhead bin while the plane was still taxiing, according to a source familiar with the incident.

The source said Slater asked the passenger to sit down, but the passenger continued to remove the bag, which struck Slater in the head. Slater asked for an apology, and the passenger refused and cursed at him, the source said.

Slater then got on the plane's public address system to say he'd had it, grabbed a couple of beers and slid off a plane through the escape chute.

This story would have been a whole lot cooler if the bag had cut or bruised the flight attendant and he ended up suing the stupid impatient fuck for every nickel he had. I don't fly as often as I once did but I always HATE people who are jostling you to get the hell off the plane the whole minute or two faster, only for you to walk past them as they stop on the jetway or in the arrival/departure lounge at the gate, adjusting their shit, trying to call someone on their cell, etc. Or end up just standing there looking stupid because they're all hyped and ready to go but the bloody door isn't ready to open up yet...

Yeah, flying international I get off the plane as fast as possible and run past everyone cause the customs lines can get long and take a long time to get through, but I won't do any of that kind of shit. But this guy was a douche, too bad something didn't happen to him like someone said.

Can absolutely understand the flight attendants reaction, I've really hated some of my customers in the past. Holy shit people can be ignorant. I especially dislike selfishness\rudeness, jerks jostling to get off the plane 30 seconds earlier are a great example, wait your turn, how precious are those 30 seconds that you have to be a jackwad? Lke aggressive drivers in town, you aren't getting there any sooner, I'll see you at the light. Stop driving like a you're in <pick a New England state> still.

Of course I've always managed to hold my temper until after I was out of the building\off the phone before blowing up.

I've always driven everywhere. I've spent time in New York, Florida, Utah, and everywhere in between. I know I'm going to have to get on a plane eventually since my wife and I have aspirations to visit some exotic worldly locations (Bora-Bora, Tahiti has been coming up in conversation a lot lately). In the meantime, my wife flies all over the country for her job. I've just never really had a reason to fly (yet). My vacations are usually local, such as a 3 day weekend in Chicago or 4 days at Niagara Falls. As a matter of fact, I'm going to spend this Fri and Sat at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City which is only about a 4 hour drive. I live in a pretty central location for getting around the mid west and east coast by car. If I wanted to head west, it's only going to be by plane!

I would just rather drive if given the option.

Me too. I don't like flying, despite having had a couple 100,000 mile years when I was doing security consulting.

Really feel for the flight attendants having seen all the self important tools they have to deal with. Look s a lot worse than many other jobs form that respect.

Being in Tampa anyplace is a long haul, it's 3 hours minimum just to get out of the state and that puts you in middle of nowhere GA.

Unfortunately the GA troopers don't consider it the middle of nowhere.

I used to like to drive. I still do but not for long trips anymore. About 500 miles (one way) is the furthest I would consider driving these days. Airport travel is annoying with all the security measures now in place but it beats wasting hours of my life/vacation driving someplace.

Well, this is where I start to sound a bit crazy, but I just love road trips. I like all the preparation involved, from planning the route to buying and preparing the food. I like packing and getting all the gear ready. I like to stop and eat at hole in the wall diners along the way. I just enjoy the journey. My 12 hour drive to NYC a couple of months ago was awesome. The twelve hour drive there felt like 2 hours. The drive back was another story though, thanks to construction and a few accidents :P

When I do fly, I have a bad feeling it's going to be, like an epic trip with multiple lay overs and all the worst parts of flying jammed into my first time. I really don't look forward to it, but it's inevitable. Oh yeah, I'm scared of heights. Sometimes I think I have "Richie Valon Syndrome" (I made it up, but it's clever as fuck). He was always scared to get on a plane, and the one time he did he died in a plane accident!

Flying certainly is more stressful to me. I'm one of those ultra-prepared flyers. At the airport I always make sure to not wear a belt, wear sandals if weather permits (pretty much always in ATX), have all my metal objects, loose change, and portable electronics stowed in a book bag, ID out and ticket handy as soon as I enter the security line.

I get so frustrated by idiots who don't do that. It always amazes me. I'm through the metal detector and getting my stuff back in a span of 15 secs, while the person infront of me invariably takes at least 2 mins and goes through the fucking detector with 3 pounds of jewelry on. I'm grinding my teeth just thinking about it. I've learned to always pick a longer line if it looks like there's a number of business men in the line. Though they're typically cold and douchey people, they know how to get through the line.

Okay, so this year after I quit a horrible job (terrible boss) in a horrible place (Oklahoma), and had little money except for some nice stock gains (thanks Ford MC) I fucking hightailed it to the west coast on an terrifically unscheduled epic 6,000-mile road trip up and down the Pacific Coast and back to Texas. It was a very rewarding experience and utterly stress free. I didn't even plan a route (thanks iPhone). It was like, "iPhone take me to Seattle" and the phone was like "yes master, I love you." Packed up a cooler of turkey sammies, OJ, apples and bananas, had picnics at beautiful vistas. Took lots of photos and met some pretty cool folks I would have otherwise have been angry at at if I were in an airport or airplane.

But yeah, you don't get that kind of opportunity much. Long distance trips I will generally fly, cause I worry about my car. It's got over 180k miles at this point.

Just did a round trip to ME and back, my mother in law died and I had to retrieve the wife and haul some stuff back.

I was on vacation already, so it turned into a trip to ME for a funeral instead of two weeks of camping in FL. Wasn't a bad trip really despite the circumstances. C'est la vie.

Long trips I'll usually fly as others have said just so I don't burn my vacation time traveling.

I have some great memories of my military transfers. Moving from FL to CA we spent 3 weeks wandering across on I80, put 5k miles on my truck for a 2500 mile trip. Coming back we took the southern route. About half way there my son pipes up, "Hey Dad, we're homeless!".

Hehe,

When my dad retired from the military, we took a few months during the summer and traveled around the U.S. (and Canada). I don't recall being exactly happy the entire time but I sure saw a lot of stuff. Things you would never see while flying or if in a rush.

On another road trip we hit up 24 states. Seeing our nation's National Parks with no set agenda or time line is a great experience.

Being a military brat, I flew a lot as a kid. I can't even remember how many times I've flow back and forth to Europe (should say from Europe since I was born there), multiple trips to Hawaii, Australia, etc. Back in the Reagan years and great military contracts, I flew first class. I miss Reagan : ( Thanks for my private school education Gipper while tearing down the wall and winning the Cold War!

On the flip side of first class, I've also flown "Space A" That's military space available...so, for example, if a Tanker has room in the cargo bay for a few passengers, you get to head to Hawaii for like $15.00 (price may have gone up over the years)...now, that $15.00 included ear plugs because you are basically in the noisy cargo bay, sitting sideways along the hull, facing in. No flight attendants!

The bonus to something like that is that I got to watch the refueling of F-4 fighters as they accompanied the tanker along the way.

I took those pictures, except the one of me and the pilot, on one of our trips to Hawaii.

I know...I know...first thing I thought of when I saw this pic before posting it here was the line from Airplane, "have you ever seen a grown man naked?"

Very bad quality picts to begin with then snapped again in bad light on my iPhone. Point is, you don't get to go up into the cockpit anymore. Things like that made traveling fun. Getting to sit alongside the Boom operators on a tanker and waving to the fighter pilots as they refueled isn't the norm but still fun and I'll take a noisy ride like that over a commercial airliner anytime.

Times have changed. The terrorists won when it comes to flight travel for me. I can't stand the restrictions in airports and on planes. I'm not complaining about them. They're a fact of life now but it ruined airline travel for me. Fortunately, I got in a ton of travel back when it was fun.

Well I'm back in Central Texas now, but working in Killeen, staying in Georgetown. I lasted about 4 months in OK. It really is a terrible place. People there are proud of their "Red Dirt" which nothing grows in. Lots of junk yards. Oh and state income tax can suck my balls. It was so bad that I felt like I literally needed to go out and explore the US just to re-learn that there are wonderful places out there, just not in Oklahoma. Kansas is even worse though (though I can't say anything about the people). Super desolate and boring. W. Kansas was like something out of Grapes of Wrath with dust storms everywhere. Ironic since I had left OK to see that sight.

Had to do a job in Indianapolis once, what a dump. Wasn't helped by the International Pork Producers convention which was running that week.

Indianapolis isn't a bad town. I always enjoy visiting it for GenCon (except this year, as I was sick).

Edit: As for the flight attendant story I think both the unruly passenger as well as the flight attendant need to grow up.
