Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill.
This could be one of the most significant man-made catastrophes in decades, if not centuries. This is not an oil spill from a singular vessel like the Exxon Valdez, it is a leak at the bottom of the ocean where oil will continue to pour into the Gulf as long as it is not contained. The oil companies themselves have the best chance to contain this spill, but everything they have tried has failed...

I was surprised that this was not being discussed at all, so lets have at it.

Not a whole lot to say. It's terrible, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot they can do. There has been a massive effort made by many people and a shit ton of money spent trying to fix it and weather conditions seem to continue to be a major reason why it's all failing.
What I'm most interested in, is whose fuckup this really was. Of course there have been ideas and blame tossed around but I really want to know the specifics of what did (and didn't) happen.

I think we can safely blame W for this.

Massive failure on the part of BP and whoever runs the rig. Has there been a root cause to the rig blowing up?
Either way, whatever contingency they thought they had....well, this is going to be ugly for a long fucking time. =(

I haven't heard anything about what caused the explosion, but the failure of a device that shouldn't have been able to fail on the seabed is scary. The amount of oil leaking is insane. We already have information spreading at work regarding potential claims on boats that we insure along the Gulf Coast.

1 of the 3 holes said to be "capped"
Interested in seeing how the device works. It covers the hole, but it can let oil be siphoned up to a tanker.
