For the love of god don't turn on your PS3 Phat right now..
Apparently Sony is experiencing problems with PS3 Phats where the things believes today is Feb 29th and not March 1st. This is an issue that seems to be very similar to the one the Zune30's ran into at the beginning of 2009.
This is causing issues with all sorts of components with the machine. People are sayin that some of their trophies are gone, that some of their saved games are corrupted etc etc.
Some games can't even be played in offline mode cause of this.
Sony is understandably working in it.

It's true. I know a few people unable to connect. I have a Slim and didn't experience any issues.

All three of our original backwards compatible 80g units are working just fine. Must be the second wave ones.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Re: For the love of god don't turn on your PS3 Phat right now..
Seems to be hit and miss on which ones are affected. Sony has only confirmed that none of the slims are having issues.. (Mine works great)
Re: For the love of god don't turn on your PS3 Phat right now..
As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.
We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.
Errors include:
* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game."
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"
* Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.
As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.
For the latest status on this situation please check either the PlayStation blog (blog.us.playstation.com) or PlayStation.com.

What a clusterfuck. People can't play DLC that they purchased. Hell, people cannot even play single player games at all. Any trophies that you have earned prior to your last synchro are likely lost for good.
Embarrassing.
I hope they fix this soon.

The problem has been pinned down to a issue where the internal clock is seeing today as Feb 29 then resetting to Jan 1 2000.
People have reported that opening the PS3 and popping the battery out (then back in) fixes the problem.
Nothing is lost... no data, no DLC, no trophies.
Worst case scenario is that people will have to wait until midnight tonight for ths issue to fix itself.

Mine did not work after midnight last night. One game launched, another would not. Got issues with connecting to the internet. I know my neighbor has the same issues.

I got the messages from Lithium hosting about maintenance. Came back after a 3-4 minute interval. Hence the modified/amended post.

Should be safe now!
(Although someone I know still has messed up trophies so... Maybe Sony has a bit more to do!)

For missing trophies, some people arw having success with inserting the game disc. Granted, doing that for all your games would indeed suck, but at least you won't lose all your hard work.

Remember the Zune 30 outage of 2008 when all the Zune 30 devices shut fown for a day on New Years.
Turns out that the older PS3's used the same chip from Toshiba.
At this point either Sony knew about the faulty leap year calculation from this and ignored the issue or they heard about it and didn't bother to even check if they would be impacted by this.
Either way, very poor form.

Yea, a clusterfuck that some people couldn't play some games on a monday!!
And OMG, some people might to have to insert a game disc to get thier trophies updated!!
The irrelevant shit that some people get worked up about cracks me the fuck up.

Seems to me like this is a bit of negligence that deprived the people that paid the most for their PS3's from using their product for a time. Yes in the grand scheme of things this is minor and nowhere near the clusterfuck that is the RROD issue but still something that would've been in their power to prevent and something they had 12-24 month warning about.

Re: For the love of god don't turn on your PS3 Phat right now..
People were concerned due to thier 600$ gaming systems suddenly not working and a lack of information from Sony about what the problem was, or how long it would take to fix it. The fact that it only ended up being a single day of people not being able to use thier PS3 fattie is all beside the point. Now that the dust has settled, it really wasn't that bad overall. The fact that it could've been entirely prevented is probably the biggest gripe people should have with Sony over this ordeal.

Re: For the love of god don't turn on your PS3 Phat right now..
This was COMPLETELY BLOWN OUT OF PROPORTION by the 'internet media' and sites were flooded with false reports by people claiming their PS3 was bricked and other bullshit. The false reports of bricked systems even propogated to so-called legitimate news sites. The number of reports on the official PS3 forums and the PS Blog were sSHOCKINGLY low considering how serious this problem supposedly was.
Most games worked just fine.
A few recent games with dynamic trophies had issues.
A large portion of affected PS3 owners probably didn't even know that thier $600 GAMING SYSTEM had a problem for less than a day.
A fix was posted by a user on the PS3 forums before 8am yesterday.
How many MONTHS did the 360 RROD problem exist before Microsoft acknowledged or fixed it?
How many million users were concerned that their $400/500 gaming system was a paperweight and there was no information from MS about the problem?
How many million 360 consoles were bricked before they did anything about it?
Being inconvenienced for less than a day if far less serious than waiting 3-6 weeks to have your console repaired/replaced.

Sony has always sucked when it comes to software and networking (kind of important these days don't you think?)
suck suck suck
360 has a cool name for their failing consoles. Sony can't even come up with a cool name for their crappy system failures.
RRoD is pure genius free marketing for Microsoft.

Re: For the love of god don't turn on your PS3 Phat right now..
I think for the scope of what happened, the internet media coverage was adequate. I mean 8 out of the 11 PS3 SKU ever produced stopped connecting to the online service and couldn't even play some games in offline mode.
The Zune 30 got this much coverage and more on the same issue and it only has a fraction of what the PS3 has in terms of units sold.
As you so succcinctly put it, people will forget about this in a few weeks. The RROD issue will probably dog Microsoft for the next generation or two of hardware.
And this outage brought us RAGE! Worth the price!
