The Tonight Show: Drama

I think it is plainly obvious who I support in the whole fiasco.

I think it's really pretty sickening the way NBC is handling this. They're not really even giving him a chance to develop his audience just like Leno had to do after taking over for Johnny Carson (another transition that NBC handled horribly). I think Conan's response to this is brilliant. I can't wait to see if he can beat Leno with his new show, probably at Fox, once it gets going. His statement today on the situation is all sorts of awesome:

Note that Conan did not quit. He threw the ball back in NBC's court. They'll have to make the final decision. They're fucked either way IMO.

Nice drama though.

So I take it Leno in primetime failed? Well hey there's a shocker. Glad they killed a bunch of programs at the time to make room for it.

Back when I watched these shows, I always liked David Letterman the best. Even he's a little crusty now.

I don't care what happens but think Conan deserves the 11:35 spot. he earned it and Jay Leno fucked up with this move to prime time (well got bad advice, plus what's up with the contract six years ago giving Conan the spot? Did Leno decide to unretire?)

Leno won't get the same ratings and if Conan ends up with another network, he'll pull even more viewers away.

If only Chevy Chase would get back into the talk show biz.

Regardless of how this shakes out, Craig Ferguson has the best late night show on the broadcast networks. I still like Conan, and I DVR both. I usually skip over Conan's interviews, though.

Could care less, I personally think all the talk show hosts, Conan in particular, are not even close to funny. Johnny Carson was funnier than all of them combined in his sleep.

I saw Furgeson live as a stand up comedy act and wasn't that impressed. I guess he's better at interviews.

It's not like Conan's weak ratings are even his fault, Leno's 10pm show failure is killing the rest of the night.

I've tried watching Jay many times through the years, but I never really liked his shows that much. I've pretty much been a Conan fan since High School (late 90's), so I hope things go well for him. I can't comment much on Furgeson, because I really haven't watched him. Letterman was never funny in the least bit to me, but I really didn't put much effort in to watching him. I have Conan on the DVR and watch it when I want, typically the day or a few days after because I am either asleep, trying to get to sleep or doing more fun things than watching TV.

I think the talk show days have come and gone for mainstream television. They were great when they were the only game in town but with so many entertainment choices these days, who the hell wants to listen to the fake chatter between semi talented comedians and celebrities pimping something? (rednecks excluded from this question)

I watched Johnny Carson because I had to. Same with David Letterman for a few years in college when pickings were still slim late at night.

I've never watched a single Jay Leno show. That goes for Conan as well although I've seen bits and pieces.

Compared to other entertainment options available (DVR'd, Live or otherwise)why the hell would you watch these shows?

Conan is one seriously funny comedy writer.
He wrote a ton of hillarious SNL skits from late 80s and early 90s and wrote some of the best Simpsons episodes.

Aside from NFL games, it is pretty damn rare that I watch network TV. Hell, I barely watch any anyway. That said, Conan is a pretty damn good writer! What snippets I have seen from his show were funny for the most part.

Leno.... just has never been funny at all. Then again, his target demographic is not me!

I thought Letterman was pretty funny in the 80s. :)

Late night tv has never catered to the right demographic. I'd watch Leno if he was part of the Adult Swim lineup. Then I'd stop watching as soon as the pointless Kevin Eubanks laughs.

My late night show would have no band, a very small, interactive audience (think Attack of the Show), and most importantly, interesting interviews. Talk pot legalization with an accountant, obesity with a mortician, sex toys with Lindsey Lohan. Let them plug their products but throw pies at them whenever they're caught plugging.

Latest rumor is that Conan is gone for sure and Leno will get the Tonight Show back. The good news is that Conan will get a shitliad of cash and apparently will be free to shop other networks.

Whoever lands Conan (most likely Fox), they are getting one hell of a start up late night show. Conan's going out with amazing popularity and will come back in with even more once he returns on another network.

The problem is that Conan's audience are in the demographic that will watch his show online or download it... which means shitty ratings for the network.

I predict he'll be Whedoned in 6-8 months if he goes to fox.

It's over. Conan is out. NBC is paying him 30million and apparently there is not a "no compete clause" holding Obrian back. Details are sketchy, but the sooner he gets a new gig, the less of that 30million NBC will have to pay.

I have got to watch his last broadcast as well as Jay's return. Gonna be weird!

Leno can lick my taint. I couldn't stand the guy before this fiasco, and the way this has worked out makes loathe him more. I can probably count on my fingers the number of times I've watched even part of one of his shows since he took over for Carson. The guy is an unfunny tool with bland writers that try to appeal to dullards and the geriatric set. I'll watch Conan's show when he lands a new gig.

Watched an ep of Craig Ferguson tonight because he had Carey Mulligan on it ... hillarious. Could have just been a good night, but was better than anything I've seen on late night TV before, other than Triumph taking the piss out of star wars nerds.

Where he'll continue to have shitty ratings.

I love reading rants by his supporters talking about how many more fans he has than Leno. It's just too bad that his fans don't actually watch his show, you know, to boost the ratings.

With all the options available for TV/Movies these days, how does anyone actually watch late night talk shows anymore? I mean, back in the day, if you had insomnia or just were a late nigh person, that was your only option, but now you have on demand TV and movies always available with things like streaming Netflix. I don't get why these talk shoes are still watched. I gutted out part of a David Letterman show a month or so back and it was horrible....HORRIBLE. (don't tell me Jay or Conan are any better) It's a combination of bad jokes in the monologue combined with a bunch of random celebrities pimping their latest movie, album, drama.

Thank god reality TV has died off a bit. Now it's time to say goodbye to late night talk show needless drama.

Took you awhile to pour through the posts! Gossip Girl was the win first season as was Jericho for a few episodes. Live a little. Try a few shows out once in awhile that aren't on the pre-approved list.

My ringing endorsement of Smallville..let me check...oh, it was"
"it's OK"
after watching some episodes.

my comments on Jericho:
I thought the main character beating out the radioactive rain by less than a second getting into the basement of the house was a little hokey
Five shows I would recommend if asked out of the blue:

Deadwood
Rome
Pacific
Breaking Bad
Firefly

And there are always one season wonders that people forget or brand as bad after follow up seasons. People tend to forget that the HEROES thread for season one (started by moi) was the largest TV thread ever on this board before Sylvus trashed the post count with a merge. Yes, it was bigger than even lost that had been running several seasons.

Dexter and Lost are entertaining shows. Feel free to criticize the shows I mentioned for recommendation. (and Dexter is on the verge of suckness after the last season which was a major drop off in quality from the previous ones) The first two seasons of Dexter were brilliant.
