No Cable/Satellite

Post by Winnow »

I've been TV free for about six months and don't miss it at all.

I could have been TV free a lot longer except for sports.

It just doesn't make sense to have cable TV or satellite when you can get your TV shows (even legally if you want) via the internet. Most of TV now are reality shows which are pure shit. I've never watched a single episode of American Idol. What crap.

Anyway, with netflix (which I don't use but there's a legal source) available on consoles, iTunes type services for downloading movies/TV shows, and of course, torrents and the usenet for getting commercial free TV, there's not much reason for "TV". Even news can be had quicker and pain free via the net, there's live feeds for business TV like CNBC.

Cox recently added ESPN360 which shows all of the ESPN college, soccer, etc games via the net:

If your cable provider doesn't allow this, they soon will I'm sure.

For football, I get a BETTER picture using over the air antenna for all Sunday games including Sunday night. The only game I don't get is Monday Night on ESPN. OTA broadcast quality is better than DirecTV and Cable HD so I'm acutally gaining there. And, of course, you can watch any NBC, CBS, ABC or PBS show in HD for free using an antenna (better, less compressed quality).

I have a hacked NBA League Pass on my iPhone which lets me watch all NBA games live and also lets me replay the entire games from the previous day. 8)

Read the comments after this article. It's no wonder the Cable/Satellite companies are scared to death and want to screw you with Bandwidth Caps, etc:

Cable/Satellite TV is dying very fast. I happily pay 70.00 just for the highest speed bandwidth I can get, but even so, my bill used to be 150.00 with cable TV (HD package andHBO) While I pay 70.00, people can get the same basic results paying 40.00 so the cable and satellite companies are in for a huge hit to revenue. I'm not saying this is all good. Need to keep these companies in business as the Internet part is still important unless WiMax becomes so good that cable is no longer needed and then I'd love so see the cable companies demolished.

I always watch my favorite shows on the internet, but I also set my DVR or cable box to the channel that the show is on to help with TV ratings for the shows I like. My TV spends more time off than on, but I always ensure to change the cable box to the channel. I also enjoy watching re-runs during the day while I do things around the house. TV is still useful, but I could easily do without one as well.

Haven't had cable for two years since I took my first job. No worries, the two or three shows I want to watch are put online by their companies now. I watch the shows on their website to support them; the ads are easily ignored, just click over to another browser and return when the show comes back on.

The majority of my free time is spent gaming. When I make time just for TV, I almost always choose to watch a DVD. I could live without cable pretty easily, but mine is paid for by my wife's company.

Free TV? That goes hand in hand with demon in the sack from the other thread. Why leave out this vital info?

She works from home, so her company pays for the phone/Internet/cable package. It's a nice little perk!

Our TV is on maybe 3 hours a month, other than Top Gear and the news every once in a while during dinner there's nothing left on TV I want to watch. Even the history and discovery channels have turned to shit.
