System and top 10 games sales - May

Post by Fairweather Pure »

Data care of NPD Group

PlayStation 2 117K
PlayStation 3 131K
PSP 100.4K
Xbox 360 175K
Wii 289.5K
Nintendo DS 633.5K

UFC 2009 UNDISPUTED (Xbox 360) 679.6K
Wii FIT W/ BALANCE BOARD (Wii) 352.8K
EA SPORTS ACTIVE BUNDLE (Wii) 345.8K
UFC 2009 UNDISPUTED (PS3) 334.4K
INFAMOUS (PS3) 175.9K
POKEMON PLATINUM VERSION (NDS) 168.9K
MARIO KART W/ WHEEL (Wii) 158.3K
PUNCH OUT!! (Wii) 156.9K
X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE UNCAGED ED (Xbox 360) 120.7K
Wii PLAY W/ REMOTE (Wii) 109.8K

Jesus Christ. Doesn't everyone on the planet own a DS yet?!?

Interesting to see the 360 version of UFC doubled the PS3 version. Those are the types of numbers I am most drawn to since Nintendo is so far ahead.

Keep in mind that is not a full month's sales for Infamous. That has gotten pretty good word of mouth, so I would think it would stay in the top 10. It's hard to say though because we have Prototype, Red Faction, and Ghostbusters all released this month and I expect them all to put up some nice numbers. I don't know what is coming out for the Wii/DS, but they could shit on a plate and it seems like it would chart top 10 sales due to the sheer volume of DS units that are out there.

I imagine since DS is aimed at a lot of kids (even though tons of adults I know own them, I have 2 for my wife and self), that many of them get broken and eventually replaced. Also didn't they put out a newer version of it with slightly more features?

The price point for the DS is low enough that it can probably work as far as convincing parents to buy them for their kids. I imagine it's better than shoveling out $200-$500 for a console and this thing is portable and doesn't take up your TV.

I'm on my fourth DS, and my husband is on his second... and yeah, they just came out with the DSi. Gamestop had a DS Lite trade-in deal for $70 towards the purchase of a DSi.

These are April's numbers, from Kotaku:
* Nintendo DSi - 827,000
* Wii - 340,000
* Nintendo DS Lite - 215,000
* Xbox 360 - 175,000
* PlayStation 2 - 172,000
* PlayStation 3 - 127,000
* PSP - 116,000

That's a lot of units. Maybe parents are buying them to keep kids occupied for the summer?

I don't know anything about handhelds. Why is the DS so much more popular than the PSP?

DS is a simple, cheap, rugged gaming system aimed at a very wide demographic (from preschool boys and girls to tweens to teens to middle aged men and women).
The PSP is a multimedia gaming device marketed to teens and men in their 20s and 30s.

That being said, the PSP has actually sold quite well (by anyone elses standards but nintendo :o )
50 million units in 4 and a half years is pretty darn good.

Well in Japan the DS and the PSP are frequently neck to neck.

Personally, I love my PSP. The DS, not so much.

PSP is for gaming and DS is for fucking around. I'll never understand why people would do any sort of serious gaming on a handheld. The iPhone easily replaces my DS for fucking around wasting time on simple games.

The DS has some awesome role playing and strategy games.
I spent more time playing Disgaea on the DS than any other (non MMO) game.

I'm kind of in agreement with this. My ipod touch gets so much time that seems to have replaced my DS. Mainly this comes from having Wifi access and a browser, along with downloading free games/apps. I think the DSi seems to try to grab at this, but I have a working DS, so why shell out another $100?

The thing is, I still play my DS because the controls are just so much fucking better for certain games. RPG and RTS games on DS are pretty damn fun. I've played some Civ and Age of whatever games on DS and put quite a bit of time in on them.

I play with my ipod touch more on a daily basis, but on any kind of travel, I'll hit up a store and buy whatever RPG or RTS game that catches my eye and play the hell out of my DS while in the airport or on the plane.

Biggest reason I went with DS over PSP when I finally re-entered the handlheld gaming market? Price. DS was just so much cheaper at the time and I knew I wouldn't be using it ALL the time. Oh, and fuck watching movies on PSP, I didn't like doing it.

Just picked up a DSi and 3 games, plus ordered a flash card so I can run homebrew/backups.

What are some good games on the iPhone/iPod Touch?

All the ones I see look pretty lame, except for Zen Bound.

I get entertained for a few hours with the stupid free ones. I got a lot of play out of Fish Tycoon (this is just like the one on the computer) and Lemonade stand (god I loved this game when I was younger). I usually just cruise the Top 25-50 Free apps. Also one that was fun competing against the wife in was some game where you had to tap bombs on the screen as they lit up, I'll find the actual name when I get my ipod back from her...

I don't think I've purchased any games though.

The General (Stratego for iPhone)
Mecho Wars (turn based strategy with unit building)
KDice (Risk type Dice Game for iPhone)
Wordjong
Tiger Woods (I've tried some other golf games but TW seems to be the best)
iShoot (still play this game, tank war type game with lots of different ammo)

I tried Mass Effect for the iPhone but it blows

I tend to ignore most games even though I get them free. iPhone good for short type time wasters. Mecho Wars would be good if you like to spend a little more time on a game.

Hero of Sparta is only .99 right now and it's surprisingly good. Saw it reviewed on AOTS and scooped it up.

Dactyl is the game I was referring to in my previous post. Although I think it's only fun if you have somebody to compete against for top score.
