MST3K

Post by Fairweather Pure »

Mystery Science Theater 3000

The show has been off the air so long that I don't really remember too much about the show. What I do remember is that reruns used to air nonstop on some channel back when I lived in Arkansas, and I have a vague memory of finding it funny if I was in the mood. My wife bought me the first 4 DVD box sets for my birthday last year and I've already watched a couple of the episodes multiple times.

I was reminded of the series from another forum where I was asking about boxed sets of really old/crappy horror or sci fi movie collections that I could get in order to play during future Halloween parties. Someone pointed me in the direction of MST3k because they thought it would be fun to have playing in the background. The bonus is that each episode contains the regular episode of the show, and on the reverse side it has the full version of the movie the crew is making fun of. Pretty cool. Although I never really see myself watching them.

This is a silly little show about a guy in outer space who is forced to watch really awful movies with his 2 robot friends (puppets). That's it. They sit in front of a giant screen and watch the movie in it's entirety, making fun of everything they can by creating alternate dialogue, pointing out who everyone look like famous people, and commenting on the bad special effects and production errors. The joke are generally hit or miss, but I always seem to get a surprising amount of chuckles out of each episode.

I was watching one where in the very beginning, this woman offered a man a cup of coffee. Well, they never had the cup of coffee. The trio procceded to make coffee jokes and comments throughout the entire 90 minute movie whenever that perticular man and woman were in a scene together. Finally, in the last momments of the movie, it shows her giving him a cup of coffee. The trio goes all sorts of crazy, and for some reason that was absolutely hilarious to me. My wife, who sat down during the very end, was like "what's so funny about coffee?". Somehow that made it even funnier.

At the start of each episode and during station breaks, there are some pretty lame skits. I usually pass these by and go straight to the flick.

The problem with watching full length movies is that they take a lot of attention that I am unable to give while doing various things around the house. Something like MST3k is perfect to throw in while playing WoW or cleaning. You can pay attention to it for a couple of minutes and get quite a few laughs in.

Overall, each MST3k set is pretty pricey. You're looking at around 50$ for 4 discs with an episode on one side, and the full movie on the other. Each episode is 90 minutes long. Still, it's a fun addition to my collection and I see them having lots of replay value. Also, I will be choosing a couple of the black and white horror flicks for my next Halloween party. I justify some of the price for that reason alone :P

It was only really good for the first 6 seasons or so while Joel was there. Once he left the show just didn't do it for me.

Yeah, the show lust its luster after Joel left. It was good stuff in its time though!

I remember there was a scene where a baby horse goes up to get some milk from the mare and says, "Sorry Dad."
