They must've named it Facebook because it rocks your face so hard. I hooked this up last night and found friends I have lost contact with over a decade ago. I even found my best friend from 1st grade. One of my friends is flying in this weekend for a wedding and we plan on hooking up for dinner the night before.

I'm adding friends left and right. It's oddly addictive.

The downside is that I am getting friend requests from old girlfriends and flings. I feel a little odd adding them to my friends list. It just doesn't seem kosher. What do others do in that situation?

I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless it was a bad break up and you think there might be issues still. Being on on a friend list creates no obligations on your part.

I think you should ask your wife what she thinks. She's the only one who would potentially have a problem with it, but honestly it doesn't mean anything. It's just a list of people who know (knew) you.

Dear lord. I got sucked into this a few days ago. My wife is addicted to it and as it turns out a large number of family members are as well. I'm still leary of putting any information out on the web for everyone to see even if only friends can see it. I'm going to take this slowly and see how things go. Once I am more comfortable with it I'll do more with it.

I use both this and myspace, but my use of them is very limited. The constant polls/lists and shit that people send out drive me fucking nuts. And you know all the funny videos/articles, etc that we have laughed at and probably posted here over the past years? Yeah, you have to watch that shit constantly resurface every couple of months by some person just discovering the internet, and they always think they found something new and funny.

I just use it to keep in touch with people, the additional social aspect/s of it don't interest me at all.

I've been on Facebook for a couple of months and as it turns out, I don't really communicate with a lot of these people even if it is now extremely conveniant.

I converse more with the the internet aquaintances on my Xbox Live friends list than I do with the people I spent 15 years with during my formative years.

As an example, I've only really interacted with Funk over Xbox Live and I already like him better than 90% of the people I went to school with.

Haha yeah pretty much the same here. I have actually said no to a lot of people from high school that have sent me friend requests, because I didn't know them well at all then and certainly don't now.. The problem is people seem to treat the number of friends they have as some sort of dick measuring utility.

I used to use facebook but it just got too out of control with all the stupid fucking apps.
It became a conduit for the most annoying shit on the internet.

I use it very sparingly now after I purged 75% of the people on my friends list.

I like myspace for it's music aspect. A lot of the DJs and artists I listen to are on myspace.

Yeah, there's definitely Facebook whores just like Myspace whores who pretty much friend anyone they remotely know or have in any way a connection to.

I originally joined simply to look at a picture somebody was trying to link to me and like a year later my nephew found me somehow so it started to become a tool I used to keep in touch with family I rarely have a chance to talk to.

In regards to the app thing, I also think it's annoying how many there are but at least it's easily handled by clicking ignore on the request. I use it as a place to share pictures of shit I've done lately etc and also to keep in touch with people who don't regularly use AIM/MSN etc, usually non-computer/tech people (i.e. family).

I don't use myspace so much, but it is good for music browsing to a certain point. Once I locked down my account, it has become much more tolerable.

Facebook is pretty cool since it is the place where I was able to chat with some old friends, as well as share pictures, etc. The apps don't bother me since I ignore them. I tend to use the Facebook app on the iPhone more than the website.

Yeah, after you have facebook for awhile, the novelty wears off. Plus, you add a person to your friends' list and then time goes by and you still forget about them. It's nice to see how people are doing once and awhile, but for most of those people, there's a reason you lost contact with them. You moved on, and they have too. It's like an episode of Frasier, where Woody Harrelson's character comes back to hang out with him. They go out one night, have a blast talking about all the old times. They go out the next night, and realize they have nothing to talk about except their past experiences.
That's facebook. Talk to them now, and then again in a few years when they've had another kid or something.

I'm finding out that some of my old high school friends have changed in ways I don't really care for. I have a girl I knew who is doing the Master Cleanse thing and I haven't really talked to her in almost 20 years, so I'm not sure how to tell her that it's one of the stupidest things I have ever hears of and that there isn't a single gastroenterologist that I know that would ever approve of it. She is a teacher too, so she should know better.

I have a friend that apparently found God. Like, in the most goddamn annoying way possible. Everything is god. Everything. She does nothing but quote scriptures, send me stupid fucking bible shit, and just generally annoy the fuck out of me. FYI, she's Catholic, was knocked up when she was 15 and currently has 3 kids total at age 34. Her kids are aged 19, 17, and 16 (all from different fathers). She just got remarried for the 4th time. Yes, I am totally judging her. She's a walking contradiction. God. God. God. Bleh. Change the fucking record already. I soooo want to delete her, but we have other friends in common and it would be awkward.

I had an ex girlfriend drop me from her friends list and put me on ignore because her current husband is jealous.

I have to tell people at work I won't add them because I don't want people at work that involved in my personal life.

This Facebook thing is kind of a PITA at times, but it's pros have still outweighed it's cons by a large margin.

Yeah I like it, but I wish the rules on Facebook were exactly like they are in the traditional game. The major difference between the two being in the traditional rules, say you roll 2 5's, keep them and roll 4 more 5's on your second roll - it counts as a 6 of a kind or whatever..

But yeah, I played it enough to get to the pro level and play with other people but have kinda fell off since then.

You make it sound like there is some risk your identity is going to be stolen because you play Mafia Wars on Facebook, it's not like that. And I too don't care if my name age and sex is thrown around, it's not like people couldn't find that info before Facebook came around.

To date, when you choose to access the app, you're not only exposing all of your information in your profile to the third-party developer that created it, you're also surfacing your friends' data. As ReadWriteWeb reported, the northern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) put together a campaign to display just how fragile your privacy is on the social network when you access one of these applications.

Out of curiosity, what sort of information could one gain which would be considered dangerous through Facebook?

Let's say I make an application in a direct attempt to harvest data for nefarious purposes, yet do it within the TOS of Facebook. What would I have to gain?

Personally speaking, I don't really have that much information on Facebook. There is a list of my friends, some songs I have listened to, and a few photos. I don't live my life on Facebook/Twitter like some do though, so maybe that is why I don't understand the possible hazard.

Someone could (and probably already has) write an app with the sole purpose of harvesting valid email addresses to sell to market research companies or spam emailers.

It doesn't have to be for nefarious purposes... the fact that by default anytime somone uses a Facebook app, they give up any control over their (and their friends) personal information.

I still fail to see where you are proving me wrong. The warning says it will allow the app to pull personal info, do you really need "personal info" defined for you? If so there is a link to the terms that you can read through.

Like Xou said, what personal info is there to even pull? Your dob, name, email address and phone number if you have it on there (I don't).. Again, nothing people looking to steal info about you couldn't have found online years before Facebook existed.

Maybe, but I am willing to bet if I went through my friends list, there isn't a single person on there that isn't using some app or another, so for me at least it's a moot point, they have all already handed the key over. Again, I'm not handing out my buddy's SSN by using the Farkle app, so I think you're overreacting a bit.
