With the new administration taking over in a month, I have a couple questions that I'm interesting in getting some thoughts on. Assuming these things will happen after January 1st, 2009.
1. If Al Qaeda invades Iraq, should we send in more troops?
2. If India goes to war with Pakistan, should we involve ourselves in that war?
3. If Russia invades Ukrain, should we involve ourselves in that war?

Re: War Questions
1) Al Qaeda doesn't invade, they infiltrate.
2/3) The UN would get involved if any country launches major military action against another country. The US is an integral part of the UN.

Re: War Questions
My answers are similar to Miir's. Question one doesn't make sense as Al Qaeda has no real military. In regard to questions 2 and 3, we certainly would and should become involved, but the contours of that involvement are completely unknowable without knowing the context and specifics of the fighting and responses from other international actors.
There's no real way to meaningfully answer those questions without more detail.

Re: War Questions
You can add any detail you'd like, as they're just thought exercises, really.
As for Al Qaeda, "invasion" isn't the right word. They are building up their strength in Pakistan, and it's very possible that they will infiltrate Iraq or even attempt to take control of Pakistan.
In the Iraq scenario, if Al Qaeda were to "infiltrate" (or otherwise increase their presence in an overt attempt to gain control of Iraq), I'm wondering how folks feel about our response. Do we increase troops? Do we pull out? Ash said pull out.
If Al Qaeda were to gain control of Pakistan (which I believe is more likely than an attempt on Iraq), I believe India would very quickly declare war.
I believe these scenarios are more possible today than they have been in years. I believe that a show of strength (force) is generally going to prove a more effective response in times of war than not using force. This opinion isn't shared with a lot of the folks that elected Obama. I'm curious about their opinions.
