if you live in new york

Post by redeemed »

Then read this! ;)
Hi. I know I've not posted anything in some time and when I do it's not all that significant, BUT I do check up on you freaks pretty often and need some advice! Really just practical advice. I'm going to New York from the 11th (this sat.) to the 18th and I need a weather check! How's it been this month? I'm in Cali so it's still pretty hot here. I'm wondering what level of cold I should expect. I know I can just look up some weather on-line but I'd rather get first hand info from people and also see if there are any "must see" not retardedly expensive places I should go!
Thanks in advance if anyone responds! NY here I come! (first time I'm excited) =)

Have fun on your trip redeemed! Always good to see people traveling and seeing the rest of the country.

I can't offer any useful information for New York except that I'm glad for your sake that you're going there and not Philly!

What I recall the most from NY was going over to see the Statue of Liberty and climbing up the stairs inside it to peer out the top of her head. That was a long time ago though. I don't know what the cost would be for the boat ride, etc now or if you can even still do that.

Don't forget to take some pictures to spark your memories later down the road!

Last time I checked they don't let you go in the Statue anymore, however you can take the boat ride around Ellis Island.

As far as weather, it's decent during the day (high 60's) but the mornings and evenings are chilly (30's-50's depending), so bring a light jacket.

I had a blast at Lucky Chengs Restaurant and the drag show was great. The food and drinks were excellent. I had a Rum Punch Orgy which I would love to find the right recipe for. The price might be on the steep side, but it might not be too bad if you look at it as a full evening's entertainment plus meal.

Do some wandering around. Being from Texas where there is a lot of open space, I loved walking through Manhattan, and being surrounded by the city. It also made me appreciate the area I live in as well :P You should be able to find a lot to do no matter where you end up. I did not do many "tourist" things, but I did wander shops and restaurants quite a bit. I was surprised by how many places were available within a few blocks of the NYU apts I was staying in with friends.

boat thing is a good call- you can see ellis island and get a good view of the statue (i found ellis island to be more interesting, though)

restaurants.. i recommend Buddakhan.. contemporary asian style stuff. fairly pricey though. can't remember exactly where in manhattan it was.

also i think it was the Marriot which has a revolving restaurant in time square that was fun (apparently the only revolving restaurant in the whole city somehow). its also an excuse to go see time square.

if you have an extra day to spend I highly recommend doing the slice of Brooklyn pizza tour:
http://www.asliceofbrooklyn.com/pizza.html
you have to get a reservation for that, though.. and pretty far in advance i think. worth mentioning anyway. they pick you up in manhattan and this guy Tony gives you a great tour of Brooklyn.. takes you to a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge.. coney island.. and 2 awesome pizza places for both Neopolitan and Silician pizza.

other things i recommend... make sure you take the subway somewhere at least once... eat lots of street vendor food... take your pick of your favorite museum(s) near central park. Virtually any one of them could easily be an all-day thing if you wanted to. and while youre near the park visit the Lennon memorial.

also wall street is cool to visit- its on the way to battery park most ways you go (i think) so if youre going to ellis you can probably walk through it. and you can also visit ground zero while you are there- cant see anything as far as their construction... but still.
I TOLD YOU ID SHOOT! BUT YOU DIDNT BELIEVE ME! WHY DIDNT YOU BELIEVE ME?

Always good to see people traveling and seeing the rest of the country.
My company just bought 5 companies so we are on a traveling training extravaganza. I just got back from Atlanta. I am heading to Buffalo next week. I then head to Alabama the first week of November. I get to have surgery number 9 on the knees the week of Thanksgiving to break things up. I am off to Phoenix the first week of December. Most of that time will be spent in training sessions, although we are going to a hockey game in Phoenix. So I will be traveling, but seeing little but bars and meeting rooms.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon

Just about everything in NY is expensive.

Check out Top of the Rock and Times Square (at night).

Go see the Flat Iron building - and while you are there, there is a park nearby with a burger stand you should go to, just to say you went there. Forgot the name - but it's famous and the lines on the weekends are gigantic - so hit it during the week. (I'm sure someone might be able to help out).

I'd do Empire State Building, just because - but the Rock gives exceptional views of Central Park.

Oh, no denying it - it definitely is tasty, but the fact remains that it isn't even close to In-n-Out. In-n-Out is the only thing I miss about CA.

heh, in the world of fast food hamburgers, in n' out and white castle are polar opposites. I regret every time I eat there about an hour later. Every orifice stinks.

I know you are already here so you already know how the weather is. Ferry rides are pretty good. The MET is worth seeing if you have any interest in art. Tomorrow is Wednesday matinee day for the theatre. Buy some half prices tickets at the tix booth in times square, have an awsome lunch (so many good places near the theatres, russian, spanish, asian, italian, vegeterian, etc) and go see a play, or vice versa. That pizza tour sounds pretty cool. I'd probably do that myself sometime.

It's so hard to pick out things to do in nyc for just a week. If it's not a tourist trap, you are taking a chance. Fortunately, most things are pretty much worth going to see or eat. There's a Ranger game tomorrow night, could go see that if you are willing to flash some green.

If they're still doing it they way they were when I was there, there are two different ferry tours. One goes all the way around Manhattan and takes over three hours, the other one goes from 39th St seaport, takes a tour down around Battery Park, up past Brooklyn Bridge and the next one (williamsburg?) and back again in like 90 minutes. I'd go with option #2 unless you have a particular interest in seeing the riverside bits of upper east side, the Bronx and Harlem.

There's also the Staten Island Ferry which is quite pretty at night, if it isn't raining/snowing/sleeting/hurricaning.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this, but in a similar note, I will be in training in San Fran for 5 days or so at the start of November. I have been numerous times, but I really want to avoid crowds and just find a nice pub/dive to hang out at after training sessions. I will be staying in South Market right by the Bay Bridge. I respectfully declined a rental as I know I can get around on the MUNU/BART. Time is limited to after work hours, so no sight-seeing involved (I've already seen it; maybe the MOMA when I arrive, but that's it). Any pointers to any venues that cater to the more (I am embarrassed to say it). "indie" crowd would be appreciated. God that sounds so retarded.

For a relaxed bar try the Homestead.

It's a pretty chill place. Might be a bit out of your way though if you are down in SoMa.

Only thing I miss about CA is Jack in the Box.. I wished to hell they would friggen open some in NY/NJ... Waking up at 2 in the afternoon on a saturday after an almost all-night raid of PoA and going down for a couple of sour dough breakfast sandwiches was the best.

The one thing you must have while in the city is a hotdog from the carts.. Dirty water dogs FTW.
