I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help."

That sounds pretty correct to me. Actually, that is the whole point of NATO, if any member nation is attacked, the other treaty members will help defend it. Maybe that is a good reason to not give membership to Georgia in the first place, but if they had become a member then we would in fact, be bound by treaty to help defend them. We could always ignore the treaty of course, but having a vice presidential candidate say that we were going to do that would probably not garner much goodwill from the other members of the treaty.
