Slow Cooker Ribs

Post by Boogahz »

Okay, I am posting this from a co-worker for personal reference later more than anything else. I have never attempted to do ribs in this way:
Texas Slow Cooked Ribs

On the 4th of July I really enjoy sitting back relaxing with the family, playing dominoes, popping firecrackers and of course good Texas Style Bar-B-Q. There is nothing like smoking or grilling ribs on a hot summer day, but what if you don’t have a grill. Try this Rib recipe that will surely have your guests thinking you slaved over the pit all day. These ribs are so tender that “you need no teeth, to eat this meat”.

Ingredients -
3 1/2 lb. pork loin back ribs
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 medium onion (sliced)
3 tablespoon liquid smoke
1/2 cup cola
2 cloves garlic (chopped) or use minced garlic
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups barbecue sauce

Spray inside of slow cooker with Pam
Cut ribs into 2 or 4 inch pieces and remove inner skin
Mix brown sugar, pepper, liquid smoke, garlic, and salt
Rub mixture into ribs
Layer ribs and onions in slow cooker and pour cola over them
Cover and cook on low heat 5 hours

Remove ribs, drain, and discard liquid
Pour barbecue sauce into shallow bowl and rub ribs into sauce
Place ribs in slow cooker and pour any remaining sauce on ribs
Cook on low heat setting 1 hour

Although that does sound quite tasty, expect Sylvos to want to murder you. :)

I have only done ribs with a smoker or grill in the past. Does he cook his ribs in a crock pot?

A recipe stating Texas Style BBQ and consisting of pork ribs is grounds for a hanging.

edit. and If I don't have access to a smoker, I make foil pouches and do them in the oven. Easy as pi and no clean up. Taste good too.

Nope! It is the crock pot that would set him off, lol.

As for me, I will try the recipe, as I have a crock pot, and don't get caught up in traditionalism. :)

I prefer beef ribs. I'm not a huge fan of pork bbq (except for the pork chops from Cooper's BBQ in Llano), but 1) I don't personally consider this to be BBQ (neither did the person that gave me the recipe, as this was specifically noted as an option for someone without a grill), and 2) I don't think many good beef ribs would fit in my crock pot.

You would need a rather large cooker for beef ribs! :D

I have done brisket in a crock pot, after searing it on a grill first. It turned out great!

Granted, it is not like using a Q/smoker, but fuck, it tastes good, and makes lots of gravy!

I've done ribs in a slow cooker a few times... while not the same as grilling or smoking they can actually be quite tasty.

Saving another recipe to try out from the same guy
It’s that time again for some Longhorn Football. The only thing better than attending the football game is Tailgating at the game. One of my most requested tailgating snack is my stuffed jalapenos, which I call Jalapeno Pork Poppers. Enjoy!!!

Jalapeno Pork Poppers

Ingredients:
15 Jalapenos
1 Pack of Cream Cheese
2lb Mozzarella Cheese
1lb Jimmy Deans Pork Sausage (Hot or Mild, I recommend you go for the heat)
1 Pack of Bacon
Toothpicks

1. First brown the pork sausage. While the sausage cooks, cut your jalapenos in half and take all the seeds out of them. Next put the peppers in a container and place them to the side.
2. In a bowl combine mozzarella cheese and cream cheese.
3. Now drain the grease from your sausage (make sure you drain this is very important). Pour the sausage over the cheese mixture and mix it all together with a spoon.
4. Dip the mixture out with a spoon and stuff the pepper. Place the stuffed peppers on a cookie sheet or pan.
5. Next cut the bacon in half. Take the bacon pieces and wrap it around the stuffed peppers. Stick a toothpick in, from top to bottom, to hold the bacon in place. Next put the wrapped stuffed peppers back on the cookie sheet or pan.
6. You have an option of grilling these bad boys are placing them in the oven. If you grill these, which all tailgaters prefer, place the peppers on foil and cook for about 45 min – 1hr. Now this depends on how hot your grill is, so watch em.
7. If you cook your peppers in an oven, cook your peppers at 375 for 30 – 45 min.
8. When the peppers are done, let them sit for 10 min, place them on a tray, and you have created the ultimate Jalapenos.

Hmm. That does sound damn good sans the cream cheese! I will have to try this, but with the mozzerella + jack, or even a cheddar cheese sauce. thanks!
