Converting DVD to AVI

I have a substantial collection of DVD's that I'd like to convert to AVI and store on my computer (external TB drive). I have been trying to get it to work with the following tools but I think I am just too stupid to make it work correctly.
I use DVD Decryptor to rip the dvd.
I use either AutoGK or DVDx to do the conversion.

Now when I started I used DVDx and I was only able to get the Added Features and not the movie to convert. This is before I learned about the IFO and VOB files and what they are exactly.

I then tried AutoGK but the movie and the audio did not match up. Very annoying. So I went back to DVDx and tried converting using the IFO with the largest VOB files in it. I had it running last night but didn't get a chance to test it this morning.

What I want to know is if there is an easier way to do this. Can anyone provide a brief tutorial on how to do this?

Hmm... last time I used AutoGK it worked perfectly. I didn't copy the files off the disc first either, just had Decrypter open.

I use a program called PvP Video Vault from Diversified Multimedia. It was 30$. They've since been taken over by Bamboo Technology, but I haven't required support in the past 2 years I've had the program so have no idea what's going on with the company.

I put the DVD in, select what I want to rip, and push "start". You have various choices of quality and size to rip the movie, all in a little drop down menu.

It supports a wide array of video types and will convert pretty much everything I've ever put in it to .avi with great quality.

I've considered trying some other programs, but just can't really justify the cost since my PVP Vault program works great.

thanks folks. I didn't get a chance to read that article yet Drolgin but will when I can. I did download the free trial of PVP Video Vault though. I am trying it out on a few different movies now. I am guessing that because it is a trial the size of the picture is set to that smaller size and if I buy the program my options get better?
