HULU TV/Movies

Post by Winnow »

Checked this site out tonight referenced by a news article.

It's pretty nice.

http://www.hulu.com/

Has TV episodes and clips for Fox and NBC along with Full Length Movies for free.

The minor annoyance is a 30 second ad before the show/movie starts (I guess there's an add, I just see a static screen as the 30 secs count down)

Check out the movies:

http://www.hulu.com/browse/alphabetical/movies

The ones with the little movie reels beside them are full length.

I was impressed with two things. The video controls are nice (dim background, skip to part in movie/episode pretty quick) and the ability to play some movies/shows in 480p. This looked nice full screen.

Not too shabby for free. Newsgroups are the best but nice to have backups!

Check out some of the 180x720 HD samples as well:

I haven't tried this out yet, but is it as good as the Netflix player? I have yet to find ANY streaming video player that is half as good as theirs. I have no slowdown, jagged lines, blocks, sound glitches, or random colors on the screen with it. Playing movies full screen with it, I can't tell the difference between the streaming movies and a dvd.

Yeah, HULU is that good. Better if you take into account the HD streams although that depends on your connection and there are no full HD movies yet.

I don't think it ALL has to do with connection. My picture was just as good on the Netflix system with my cable as it is with my 10Mbps line. ABC, FOX, and one other network stream was pure shit even before. It usually took me several tries to actually finish a show, and only ABC's system with the commercial breaks actually made it easy to start back up semi-close to where I lost the show.

For streaming HD content, iTunes (god damnit) is a good resource.

Check out their HD podcasts. (go to the iTunes podcasts main page and there is a big "HD Podcasts" button. Give Tekzilla a try. Looks pretty good! Maybe try out Diggnation in HD as well. Geek Brief TV but that's not full HD (looks ok on my 46"LCD though)

For you comic geeks (me included) check out the HD version of Pulp Secret - The Stack. The three hosts are as geeked out as they come in the comic book field and the weekly comics they review look great on the screen. They know their shit. I like this show because they pump out a lot of good info in each 10-12 minute episode (airs a couple times a week) and while they screw around, they don't talk about their personal lives like some podcasters do, thinking you give a shit about that.

Anyway, I download a few video podcasts to my Nano Fatty or iTouch for viewing at lunch, etc but streaming some of these at home in HD is a nice option!

Here are the HD podcasts available atm (there's a shitload of non HD video podcasts as well out there)
