Radiohead show
Just got back from a radiohead concert out in Virginia. Good show. Describing live music is hard so I usually don't bother doing it, but this one was more noteworthy for the experience.
The venue is about 50 miles from my place. The opener was on at 7:30. I left at 6, assuming that I might end up missing a bit of the opener if parking was crappy. We got there at 9:45. For those of you who don't live in the midatlantic, we're getting absolutely hammered by a hell of a rainstorm right now. The rain washed out a bunch of roads and made traffic a mess. On top of that, this place is in the stupidest possible location with only a few small access roads, so traffic sucks anyway.
The venue is outdoors. We missed about 25 minutes of Radiohead's set, and showed up in a downpour. The field was just mud a few inches deep. Every few minutes you had to move your feet to keep your shoes from disappearing into the muck. My friend and I brought a tarp, and just wrapped it around ourselves and huddled inside it in an attempt to keep dry and warm (it was moderately successful). Radiohead had a sense of humor about the whole thing and played a second encore ostensibly to reward us for sticking it out and to apologize for the logistical and weather nightmare (maybe they play a second encore routinely, but I refuse to believe this and will assume that they were rewarding the crowd).
The ride home was equally a nightmare. Trees are coming down and falling on parked cars in Washington DC and a fair number of roads are flooded out. My driveway has six inches of water just standing in it.
Anyway, the show kicked ass, played lots of stuff from many different albums. Would recommend going... indoors... or in good weather.

Re: Radiohead show
Sorry to hear about the weather mate.
I'm going to see them next month in Dublin, hopefully the Irish summer will continue being awesome and it'll be a blast. Out of interest, was it 90% In Rainbows stuff they did? I'm going to see them at a venue thats probably going to hold 30,000 people or more, I'm not how well a lot of In Rainbows would translate to a large crowd (although I'm not that worried tbh, it'll probably be fine).

Re: Radiohead show
Apparently they led off with a lot of In Rainbows (I missed a fair amount of it) but they also played a surprising amount of old stuff... Paranoid Android, Karma Police, Planet Telex, etc... fans who like the old stuff should be happy I think.

So about that rain...
It flooded my apartment and destroyed it, and now I'm homeless.

Re: Radiohead show
Nissan is about 10mi from my house and a few friends went to that concert as well. It's too bad the weather was such complete shit, I know they were pretty excited about it. Sometimes I think about going to concerts and I remember the crappy parts like sometimes being weather unfriendly and random other things that can generally make the experience unpleasant.
Edit: I'm pretty sure he's talking about the show at Nissan Pavilion, thats what I think my friend said the show was going to be at. I live in Centreville off of 66 and Nissan is literally like a few exits up.

Re: Radiohead show
Let me guess... Nissan Pavilion. That has to be one of the worst venues I have ever been to, if not THE WORST. We saw the Dave Matthews Band perform there several years ago. We got stuck in traffic on the way there, even though we left 2 hours before the opener. I can only imagine it's worse now that the sprawl is more out of control now around DC. They parked us literally in the middle of a row of cars. I began to imagine trying to escape from the venue with 25,000 other people and make it home in under 3-4 hours. We finally got inside 1/2 way through the first set, and left before the encore so we wouldn't get stuck in traffic again. The number of frat boys and sorority girls yelling "PLAY ANTS MARCHING!!" was annoying.
At least for RFK you can take the metro. I do miss Wolf Trap though. Two of my favorite indoor venues are in the DC area; The State Theatre and The Birchmere. If you get a chance, see a show at either.
Glad you enjoyed the show despite the rain.

Re: Radiohead show
i saw them out here in Florida. was a great show but their opening band was ridiculously bad. we were considering that they actually had no opening band, and these were simply random people from the audience that wandered up on stage in search of a big break and started screeching into the microphone.
it took them a ridiculously long time to set up the stage, but it was worth it i think.. some impressive visuals
as an added treat, yorke's hair was a bit shaggy and he was growing a beard- resulting in an anorexic clone of chuck norris flailing about on stage singing a stirring falsetto
song list was good- lots of in rainbows. had iron lung and street spirit as the earliest, iirc. street spirit was a good one for me- one of my favorites and the first song i learned on geetar

Simmons is a renowned moron so this sort of thing isn't surprising. It's a shame so many people idolise such an idiot. But hey, whatever.KISS star Gene Simmons has slammed bands like Radiohead for putting on boring live shows - insisting fans deserve to see spectacular performances from their idols.
Simmons is convinced that because fans often pay a lot of money to go a concert, groups have a responsibility to make it worth their while.
And the guitarist can't stand it when bands put minimal effort into their shows.
He says, "I admire bands like Radiohead, but the idea of being that serious? F**k that, get up on stage and blow s**t up!
"Bands that stand by their microphones and strum their guitars are forgetting one important point - people are bringing their eyes, it's audio and visual. If you're not fulfilling the visual part it's like watching a movie with your eyes closed.
"One of the biggest compliments we get is (when people say), 'I f**king hate their music but that's the best show I ever saw in my life.'"
Radiohead where fucking superb. They were playing in a town called Malahide which is about 20 minutes outside Dublin. It's right beside the sea and also really beautiful and leafy, a totally picturesque dream village. The weather was beautifully hazy and warm and the grounds of the Malahide Castle were a fantastic setting. The stage was immense and off to one side an ancient Castle was lit up.
The music itself was spot on. They played loads of fucking awesome songs like "idioteque" "Everything in its right place" "Where I end and you begin" - and a million others.
Really fantastic gig, I'd definitely pay to see them again, they are absolutely sublime live. Gene Simmons can fuck off.

Re: Radiohead show
Gene Simmons has had more influence on the rock and roll you love so much than radiohead would if they were making music for another 200 years, and I don't even like him or Kiss. That's not to say what he said is necessarily true, but you calling him a "renowned moron" is another case of you stating your moronic opinion like everyone else shares it.Nick wrote:Simmons is a renowned moron so this sort of thing isn't surprising. Once again your complete and utter ignorance of all kinds of music (outside of hip-hop) shines through.Gene Simmons has had more influence on the rock and roll you love so much than radiohead would if they were making music for another 200 years
I won't deny Kiss' influence specifically on hard rock/heavy metal but you're amazingly ignorant if you you don't see that Radiohead has been one of (if not THE) most influential forces in the music industry in the past decade.

I will kindly disagree. I have a lot of friends that are into modern rock big, and I can honestly say I don't think I've ever even heard anyone outside of VV mention Radiohead. Their style is not a style I think has permeated into rock, I don't hear other bands that I feel have adopted any of their style from Radiohead.miir wrote:Once again your complete and utter ignorance of all kinds of music (outside of hip-hop) shines through.Gene Simmons has had more influence on the rock and roll you love so much than radiohead would if they were making music for another 200 years

Just because you and your friends love Radiohead and think they have transcended human status to some kind of rolling band of rock gods doesn't mean it's true, and it certainly doesn't make me ignorant.
P.S. - Them being one of (or the first) bands to go independent and sell records on their own also doesn't mean shit, so there's no need to pull that card. Man I'm in a bad mood today.

Re: Radiohead show
Fuck blowing shit up. Give me 1 person with talent and an instrument, and if they played something I was keen on I'd probably pay to hear them perform on a fucking street corner sans pyrotechnics. And Funk, don't even pretend to sit there and know shit about who influences what. Just because you have some friends that don't listen to Radiohead means dick all. They are selling out major venues no matter what you or Mr. Simmons or any other haters have to say about it. "Modern rock" happens to encompass quite a few different styles and tastes, and I don't like all of them (you can put Kiss toward the latter for myself). I like some hip hop, but I could care less about most sold out hip hop shows. I have friends that like a certain type of hip hop, but think other types suck.
Pigeonholing music makes you look stupid. And Gene just plain is stupid.
Oh yeah. I'm a musician, and Radiohead influences/inspires me. So you can shut the fuck up about it.

P.S. Ranting about how they sell out shows is moronic and very telling of the character of those that have pulled that card. N'sync sold out all their shows too. It's kinda cute how you guys got so bent out of shape so fast.

Seriously, why did you feel a need to jump on this thread and ruin it? It's a thread I made about a concert I went to that had a fairly unique experience attached to it. The thread was light-hearted and let a number of posters talk about something that we were all interested in. Nobody mentioned Iraq. Nobody bashed America. Is the mere fact that Nick happens to like the band that the thread was about enough for you to have to jump in here and go on a clusterfuck crusade? Isn't everything else on this entire fucking website enough of a worthless clusterfuck for you? Jesus fucking christ.
And: Everyone here is a music snob? Dude, you're in a fucking music forum. I started this thread and I love fucking T-PAIN.

I remember reading an article awhile back about the pyrotechnics at a Kiss show. They evidently play the exact same show every night, and have the timing down so specifically that they don't actually need to have any staff setting off the pyrotechnics. It can all be automated. Every single time out they play the exact same note at 32:41 (or whatever), so the fireworks can go off then, and it lines up every time.
I'm sure that plenty of people who are into the big spectacle aspect of a concert like that sort of thing, and more power to them. Not at all what I'm into. Reading that killed any desire I ever may have had to go to a Kiss show.
and this:Funk wrote:I don't see the lines for their concerts that I see for other concerts, etc.

I listen to rap, and every post that gets made about it here gets derailed by someone who doesn't like rap music, and you expect an ounce of sympathy out of me? Excuse me while I go fucking laugh.
Them selling out shows is irrelevant to them being a talented band, hence the reference I made. People who's music sucks, and is nothing to get excited about sell out shows all the time (any boy band, girl band, etc). So (I'm repeating myself, in case you didn't understand the 2nd time I said it), making the deduction that they are a talented, influential band because they sell out a concert is 100% retarded.
You need to stop being a fucking little bitch about it son, it's not becoming of you.

I've been told to not post in the music forum because my taste in music isn't sophisticated enough, so again - why wouldn't I go out of my way to piss those people off? Exactly.sueven wrote: And: Everyone here is a music snob? Dude, you're in a fucking music forum. I started this thread and I love fucking T-PAIN.
I think maybe you and many others here think I'm joking or trolling when I make these posts, which is a major misconception. I am a mean, cruel, negative, vindictive person, and when someone pisses me off (like nick for example) I go out of my way to make their life less enjoyable.

Re: Radiohead show
about bloody time.
Anyway, Apart from a couple of technical hiccups, the Dublin gig was superb. Thom Yorke's voice sounded great live, and you could pretty much walk right up to the front of the crowd, right up close to watch them perform. The crowd had a lot of people 25+, so it didnt have that usual moshing gibbering idiocy you get at gigs for other big bands.
