Culture: Societies Albatross to Progress

Post by Fash »

We talk a lot about religion and race, but there is a common denominator that avoids much scrutiny. Culture is pretty much ubiquitous, and we probably all identify with at least one, but it ties us to the past and divides us. Italian culture, Polish culture, Black culture, Mexican culture, Indian culture, Christian culture, etc... All of them define you in terms of the past and predetermine actions in your life.

What got me started on this was reading part of a thesis on race relations by Michelle Obama, which used the assumption that there is a distinctive Black culture very different from White culture. I contest that remark, as I don't think we're that different at all in most cases... We all have the same basic needs and goals, since society has pretty much determined that for us. Culture tends to agree with her, however, since we voluntarily divide ourselves on arbitrary lines and resort to propaganda techniques against everyone else.

That and I wanted to use a colon to upset Miir ; - )

I think it would be hard for a white person to really know the full extent of being black. If you haven't experienced something yourself you are not prone to recognize it.

Mind you I live in a 99% white (guess) part of Canada so I don't really know what the fuck I'm talking about. I do know if someone followed me around in a drug store it would freak me out.

You also have to take into account when the thesis was written. I assume it was the 80s?

You don't think we are all that different?

Rap -- Rock-n-Roll
24"s on a Caprice -- Pickup trucks
Gangs -- Forum chat rooms
68% children born to single moms -- 25%...
Bling -- wedding rings
Really damn good at sports -- well, there's hockey

That list could go on for days.

My point is, there is a cultural difference, that effects the way we live. I'm not saying it's bad, just that it is there.

Oh, Christ, you're an idiot. And it's 'affects' the way we live, not effects.

It's not a large jump to conclude that you pay about as much attention to the content of your posts as you do to the spelling of them. Using that old chestnut about first/last letter is just a convenient excuse for you to be lazy as fuck, isn't it?

effects\affects are not my friends, but Kaldaur played the grammar card as a side note to calling you an idiot. I think you are defending the wrong thing here.

Because the first point in Kaldaur's post is so well established that it's really inarguable.

Even after watching Finding Forrester, farther/further always makes me hesitate, more so when actually speaking than writing...which brings up then/than which I screw up often when typing fast. Hear/here are embarrassing grammar screw ups...were/wear, etc etc.

Everybody on this board has called everyone else an idiot at some point... So I kinda just blanked that out.

But telling me I used effects when I shoulda used affects just hurt my feelings.

While I don't know that Noysy's examples are all particularly illustrative or accurate, I think his general point-- that there are significant differences between 'black' culture and 'white' culture-- is completely accurate. That's not to say that there are not divisions within white culture and within black culture, but race does matter.

There's nothing wrong with appearing to be educated. People will tend to take your posts more seriously.

It sure does. Especially when those divisions and differences are fed to each new generation of white and black people is fed to them right at birth, by the media, their parents, their pastors. Every day we discuss the things that divide us, instead of the things that unite us. There is no ratings in unity. There is no push for "change" in political parties in unity.

Here's the problem. If Nosy were a black man and said the same things in ghetto speak, you wouldn't be so quick and bold to correct him and tell him.."there's nothing wrong with sounding educated".....

You're describing a culture. It's much different than the culture I was raised in. While I was in the Army, most of my friends and the majority of the people I hung out with, were black. The Hip-Hop Culture (as I called it) rubbed off on me over time, and I learned a lot from it. You don't correct a person's culture, but you can correct a person's ability to type in the English language.

Noysy likes to type the way he speaks, or at least that's the impression I get. To me, that's fine. If he wanted to bust out with some Ebonics, that would be ok with me too. But he's not always typing in an accent when he's improperly using words like affect/effect. I'm no grammar nazi, but I don't think there's anything wrong with appearing to be educated.

I used to type "a lot" without the space. A person can actually learn quite a bit reading these forums, if they don't get defensive every time someone tries to correct them.

Indeed. However, a lot doesn't get discussed because many people focus on silly gramatic nonsense and personal attacks instead of just having a reasonable discussion with give and take. Just my two cents.

Why sir, I do believe that is the nicest thing you've ever said to me... I'm touched.

Affect/effect. Is it really that big of a deal? I mean really... jeesh.

And, by the way, I need not rely on 'spellcheckers' to appear smarter for you people. I mean, cmon. Yer a bunch of computer geeks who live to give each other shit. Fukin dorks.... wait... Fuk I'm here too.

Edit: "Fuk" explained; I got used to eq's filter, and purposly started typing it without the 'c' so that the children would still know what I was telling them to do.
