Forgetting Sarah Marshall
This is easily the funniest movie of the year so far. I almost cried laughing on several occasions. If you like Judd Apatow's movies this one is no different. Great date movie as well!

Re: Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Agreed on all counts. I laughed a lot during that movie.
Be forewarned that there's a good amount of male penis (as opposed to female penis) in this movie.
But that's probably why Zamtuk liked it so much.

Re: Forgetting Sarah Marshall
My girlfriend and I saw this last weekend, I thought it was pretty damn funny, too.
Re: Forgetting Sarah Marshall
This is the one with Russell Brand in it isnt it? He's a fairly big comedian/wordsmith over here in the UK. Sometimes he's really funny, sometimes he isn't.
Is he funny in this? Or is he trying to act in a serious way? (If that's possible for him??)

I would say it's more the movie that's funny than him, but he definitely didn't do a bad job.Nick wrote:This is the one with Russell Brand in it isnt it? He's a fairly big comedian/wordsmith over here in the UK. Sometimes he's really funny, sometimes he isn't.

Re: Forgetting Sarah Marshall
I thought he was great. He definately didn't take his character seriously (not sure if it was possible for the characters sake), and really made it work. He pretty much stole the dinner scene near the end of the movie.Nick wrote:This is the one with Russell Brand in it isnt it? He's a fairly big comedian/wordsmith over here in the UK. Re: Forgetting Sarah Marshall
This came out on DVD last week. I thought it was an instant classic. I laughed my ass off pretty much from beginning to end. The outakes, bloopers, and extended scenes were all hilarious.
Segel and Apatow have been accussed of writing completely from the male perspective at the expense of the female characters (most notoriously with Knocked Up) and I think that is totally unfair. They are men. Of course they are writing everything from the male perspective. That is what is so great about their brand of comedy IMO. I don't sit back and complain that Sex and the City is ignoring the male perspective because the show and movie was written for women. Duh? These movie are essential male romantic comedies. Forgetting Sarah Marshall is about a man dealing with getting dumped. Women don't have shit to do with the driving point of the film, other than to be plot devices to drive the main character's journey.
Hey, I had my heart broken. I get all the pain, and in hindsight, silliness of what the character is going through. There was one momment where he had a flashback to a mini montage of all these special, intimate momments with Sarah. Man, I've been there. I've fucking had those. They come from nowhere and are just devastating. His immature way of dealing with things? I fucking did that too. All in all, it struck close to home on so many weird personal situations I never even told anyone about that I ended up being very impressed to see them in a movie. To top it all off, it was just plain funny as hell.
Btw, the women were beautiful. Both are pretty short, which was strangly nice to see.
I would rank the "Apatow Gang" comedies in this order:
40yr Old Virgin - Still gets top honors from me.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall - Very close to getting #1.
Knocked Up - M wife ranks this as her #1
Superbad - Easily slotted as 4th for me. As good as it was, it seemed the most derivative IMO
I still need to see Pineapple Express. Zack and Miri Make a Porno will surely jump to the top of this little chart, even though that is technically a Kevin Smith film
I think that Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse is finally in preproduction too.
For a comedy, this movie gets my highest reccomendation. It's as good as anything I've ever seen.
I look forawrd to everything these guys are involved with.

Re: Forgetting Sarah Marshall
An excellent suggestion. That sounds like my plan for Friday night now that I'm almost caught up on Dexter. Which one would be best for watching with the wife, Knocked Up?

40 Year Old Virgin is pretty damn funny and gender neutral as well imho.Ashur wrote:An excellent suggestion. That sounds like my plan for Friday night now that I'm almost caught up on Dexter. Which one would be best for watching with the wife, Knocked Up?
