Charlton Heston dead at age 84.

In June 1998, Heston was elected president of the National Rifle Association, for which he had posed for ads holding a rifle. He delivered a jab at then-President Clinton, saying, "America doesn't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters, and we sure, Lord, don't trust you with our guns."
It sounds like he had fun. Nothing wrong with that.

Well, he beat the average life expectancy for Americans.

...and where do Candadians get off living longer than Americans?

Must be a lot of fish eating Eskimos up north that skew the stats!

Poor Afghanistan. Along with a few African nations, their people only live to reach 40.

Calling him a "Civil rights activist" is a bit of a stretch of a definition imo. "Pro gun nut" would probably be more applicable.

Still, he was a great actor, and he was brilliant any time he did anything by Shakespeare.

'The Right to Bear Arms' is a civil right, for Americans...

Yeah but it isn't specifically for women or black people? Civil rights pertain to all people? Hmmm

So using the same logic, Howard Stern would be a civil rights activist?

He's described as a civil rights activist because back during the civil rights movement in the late 50's and 60's, he was a fairly vocal supporter of the movement. He picketed segregated theaters that were showing his films in the south, and was with MLK at the civil rights march in D.C. in the early 60's. He was a vocal supporter of democratic political candidates (specifically the Kennedys), and it would probably shock some to know that he was a very vocal supporter of Johnson's gun control act following Robert Kennedy's assassination. Personally, I think that he gets a little too much credit for this in his obituary. While he was sympathetic to the cause and supportive to a degree, he wasn't exactly getting blasted by fire hoses, mauled by police dogs, beaten with a police baton or risking murder in Mississippi. Whatever good he did in the past, it's forgotten for the most part (rightfully, imo) because somewhere along the way, he went nuts and became a conservative, Reagan-worshiping republican and all around gun-nut.

He should have quit while he was ahead.

In a larger sense, yes. Unfortunately, the right-wing wackos and liberals are more than happy to combine forces in the past 3-4 years and destroy free speech by firing anyone who speaks real.
