China bans horror

China bans AV products with "elements" of horror
13 Feb, 2008, 2030 hrs IST, PTI

BEIJING: China has banned the sale of audio and video products with "elements" of mystery and horror, saying it was an initiative to protect the "psychological development" of the country's children and teenagers.

The horror, violence and cruelty depicted in the audio and video were unfit for children and extremely harmful for their psychological development, the General Administration of Press and Publications (GAPP) said in a circular.

It also ordered all publications containing elements of mystery and horror to be pulled off from the market and the audio and video products to remove "any hint" of mystery and horror.

GAPP defined audio and video products with mystery and horror as those that involve alien looking characters and fictional story telling, both specifically plotted for the sole purpose of terror, the official Xinhua news agency said.

China launched its crackdown on "terrifying publications" in 2006 when it targeted a Japanese comic story "Death Note" involving a notebook that "can kill people" if their names are written on it and depicted scary ways of dying.

The move comes as the latest in the series of crackdowns after targeting vulgar content in video and audio products whose production and sale had been ordered to be stopped and those already in the market to be recalled.

We're so fucked. WW3 is coming in the next 15 years. I hope we have a decent military presence when it happens so we can defend ourselves.

This works. They won't be immunized to the horrors of war and will shut down like a five year old witnessing a beating if we get in a conflict.

P.S. yes, I'm kidding. It's like the religious right in complete charge.

I think this is a great example of some China looking at the "Big Picturetm" and trying to protect it's people. It's wrong on so many levels. However, it's mportant to note that there are people in America, if they had it thier way, who would do the exact same thing.

I'm not seeing your connection between large scale censorship and WW3 though. Care to elaborate? Although if WW3 does indeed happen within your predicted timeframe, we'll likely still be stuck in the quagmire of Iraq if another Republican is elected. Now wouldn't that be ironic? Let's all thank Dubya and Co. for doing what they wrongfully thought was correct for thier version of the "Big Picturetm".

Even though the age was really only mentioned here, isn't it basically the same thing as our rating systems and the intent to keep children from viewing R-rated material?

I blame Japan for this. If they would stop making crappy horror flicks, they wouldn't be in this mess.

It doesn't sound like that from the article... It didn't say 'dont sell this stuff to minors,' it said remove the stuff from the shelves. Is China going to become one big carebear country?

You said you were kidding.... but.... If a whole generation were to be raised without any 'horror' in their lives, wouldn't they?

I cant believe you people do not see the implications of this... It's 100% govt control of its people. You test with something like "horror is bad for kids" then if it works, it's "freedom is bad for you". Now china has never been a free country, but to hear you morons defend this is just scary as fuck to me.

I'm not defending it at all. I think others simply share the irony that the most frighteningly conservative and ignorant posters on VV are all up in arms over censorship in China when they constantly advocate the supression of due process, inalienable rights, and various other questionable activites by our government right here in the states under the guise of "doing what's best for the country".

It's really quite amazing they do not see the similarities.

I think the difference is that the China stuff affects ~100% of their population, and the US stuff you're referring to affects ~0.0000000000000000000001% of the population. See the difference?.... I do.

I'm not up in arms over anything, btw... I don't really care what China does, as long as they keep their shit to themselves.

Exactly. You saw no outrage from me either. I'm not a liberal who thinks I know what's best for other countries, people, etc. I'm only concerned how it might affect us somewhere down the road.

I guess movie studios that release horror films won't make much money in China.

So China is nurturing a generation of kids sheltered from violent thought, while ours are plugged directly into high-def murder simulators as soon as they can hold a crontroller?

I do see the similarities. But what I gleened from your earlier post was 'that this isnt a bad thing, they are looking after their kids'. Perhaps I was mistaken in thinking that.

And on another note, how is beeing conservative frightning? I see it as logical, and the liberal stance beeing one of emotional, thus lacking any logical thinking. Male vs female thinking type debate.

Bush and the "republicans" are NOT conservative. Think Libertarian. Wich is what party most suits my views.

Ok lets look at this Berkley thing.

Code Pink, and the Berkley city council. All liberals. do we agree there?

Marine Corps recruitment officer. Well thats a rather conservative possition, not likely to be held by someone with liberal views.

Code pink stages a protest against the recruiters, because they train people to be murderers. A look at Code pink's web sight brings up a topic of "peace keepers should be sent to Darfur!" Stop military recruiters cause they make murderers, and now who are these peace keepers gonna be?

Marine Officer sends a letter to both Code Pink and the Berkley mayor, explaining the illogic in that. As well as other points that if they dont belive in the war, perhaps you should talk to the polotitions, not the marines, since, you know, they dont make policy.

All very Logical points to counter the emotionally driven thoughts of the "liberals".

As for you Bagar~. You doubt that women are emotionally driven? have you ever met one? Again, me seeing, and mentioning a difference, makes me a racist/sexist. Bight me cause yer an idiot, so now I guess that makes me an Inteligionist (I made a new word).

I have a feeling "general life" in China prepares their kids for a hell of a lot more than any video game here ever could.

I disagree, but I can see how the two of you would think that. I mean, considering his first post and the whole reason he even started posting...
Bagar wrote:Why the fuck would anyone else try to argue with you two dicksock motherfuckers? I've been reading your stupid hypocritical bullshit for three years now, and haven't bothered to post, because no amount of arguing can change you fucktwits into reasonable, logic-bearing human beings. Half the time you assclowns post just for the sake of being contrary, yet you try to convince other people to look at the "big picture" or to see things from your view? Fucking morons. You just post to annoy people, not to actually bring about any level of debate. A debate involves people listening to and at least granting the other side a momentary glance of consideration, countering other individual's points by ackowledging them and giving real evidence that they're either false or inconclusive, or perhaps even granting the otherside is correct and conceding your point. All you morons do is see who can yell the loudest. Often this goes for both sides of the fence, but mostly it's just Funk and Mid.

So yeah, what in the fuck would cause anyone to want to argue with you morons? The saddest thing is that you're both so convinced that you're right, that you'll never, ever look at anything but what you strictly hold to be true and give it chance; you know, perhaps learn something new or take up a new belief, or modify your own. That's the highest level of ignorance I can think of.

I'm just mimicing the level of uselessness that you display in literally every thread in the CE forums. For the the last 4 years. Is that alright with you?

If it was worth even a minute of my day i'd try to rationally engage you guys, but let's face the simple truth: it's not. It's not worth anyone's time, but people choose to do it anyhow. Their loss.

I guess it depends on what side of the fence you're on, but while I can acknowledge that my posts are useless and serve no purpose - you can't.
