Finally decided to spring for some new 24s

Post by valryte »

So, today I headed over to my local BB to buy some cheap $200 LCD for a server I have here in the house that I was moving because it's too load and the noise and heat was getting to me. Yes it's that loud, it's one of those huge Dell quad processor systems with like a 6 drive array. Dam thing sounds like a jet plane. Anyways, I was using one of those 500 pound CRTs on the server and decided to get rid of it today. Well, while looking around I see that the Samsung 24" monitors had dropped to 429.00. After comparing prices at Newegg + shipping versus just getting it today from a local store, I fell to the grips of impluse shopping. Well that's not exactly true, I've been thinking about upgrading to 24" monitors for a while now and decided now was a good time. Plus I had some extra cash in my business account left over from last year :) So here they are, I present my 2 new monitors.

Here you can see one of the 20" LCDs that I was using before all the way to the right. Its a Dell 2007WFP. BTW, it's really nice if you're thinking about getting a 20" widescreen. I would have gotten the Dell 24" if they didn't charge like 600+ just to have it with the adjustable stand!

They kind of dwarf my 15.4" WS laptop...

I was using dual 20" widescreens before, but I must say, these 24" are a bit overwhelming. At their default brightness, a little voice inside was screeming...."Bright Light, Bright Light!"....

It's about time! They look good valryte.

One of those PC cases on the floor is fake and hides the stash!

I'm still using my second 24" in portrait mode but either way, I suggest you angle your monitors toward you so you don't get any lighting and color distortion. I have one directly in front of me and one to my right at an angle so I have a straight-on view of it. Might help!

I develop software, so horizontal is what I want mostly. Even on my 20" WS I was already having an issue and had to undock windows from the IDE and move them to the next monitor. On these new monitors I can move them back to the IDE and still have plenty of room for the code. Been coding past couple hrs and it's really nice.

The tray? You can get them almost anywhere that you can get components. I have one to store extra screws and such.

that is where I got mine too, but you have to act fast if you want to get one now...since they went out of business and are in the process of shutting down the rest of the stores. I think the stores in my area now have everything discounted 20-40%. The sad thing is that most of their stuff was so overpriced that it is just now getting to Newegg prices with the discounts.

I have no room for hidden trays!

here's why I like my second monitor in portrait:

Comics look stupendous when viewed in 1200X1920(as do pdf's etc). I rotate it down when I play Xbox 360 games but most of the time I find I can arrange my secondary apps on the second monitor in portrait without problems.

Yeah I got mine also during the clearance. My local store is still open. And I agree, they are so ridiculously overpriced. No wonder they went out of business! I see items marked 20-40% down and they are STILL higher than other places.

Nice case Winnow, looks familiar :)

Isn't that like the best case? I just love the space they made on the other side of the motherboard. Love running all the cables back there and out of the way. I have 4 drives in mine. I still have the interior bay at the bottom completely free, so have room for like 4 more drives, but I doubt I'll ever use them with the sizes of drives. If I need more space, I'll just buy bigger drives :)

Looks great Val! Looks like a nice computer geek setup. Mine is similar, but my wife and I try to make it look a little more "homey" by hiding almost everything from plain sight except the monitors. Seperate those rear channel speakers!

My wife is going to dump her desktop in favor of using her laptop full time. I'll have an extra 17" flatscreen handy that I may try and use with my 24" Dell. I've never used duel monitors before, so it should be interesting. It seems a tad redundant to me because I also have a 17" laptop that sits next to me too. Am I missing something?

lol yeah, I never finished setting them up correctly. The way I have my office laid out atm doesn't really have a good place to put them. Behind me is a closet and I'd prefer a wall for them instead.

Having multiple monitors all depends on what you do. For the average user, you probably won't get much benefit from them especially if you have a laptop near by. As a programmer, I just couldn't work without a second monitor. I'll be coding on one monitor and on the other I might have the program running while I debug, or I'll be running queries on SQL on the other monitor. I've actually used both monitors and my laptop together, but that is rare.

You should really try it. But not just any trackball, has to be the one where you use your thumb. It's so much nicer than a regular mouse. I just can't stand having to move my hand and twisting my arm constantly. With the trackball, my hand just sits there without moving. Plus I have had issues with my wrists in the past. That was until I switch to a trackball :) The trackball also helps to deal with limited space issues. My desk happens to use a keyboard drawer, so I don't really have the room to have a standard mouse there anyways.

Update on the monitors:

I've had to angle /\ them so that my viewing angle is straight on regardless of which monitor I look at. I've noticed that due to their size and viewing angle limitations, if I have them perpendicular to me, the outer edges of the monitors have some minor issues due to the distance my eyes have from them. I also had to lower them so that my eyes were more centered on them as well. I noticed that I had them set too high and the top of the monitors created a very large viewing angle, so some text had some issues with clarity/sharpness. It's very easy to see the differences when comparing it to my Dell Ultra sharp 20" WS. The dell has a much better picture, but then again the Dell 24" would have cost me an additional $270 each. So far there hasn't been anything too crazy that I just couldn't deal with somehow.

I was messing with my settings and omg, I finally got them looking better. Apparently the default Sharpness is set to max, so that was causing some of the text to look like crap. I brought it down to like 50% and it looks much better (closer to what my Dells look like). Also mess with the contrast as well.
