Treat it like your home stereo. With a home stereo system, half of your money should be spent on the speakers. With a PC, half should be spent on the mouse.
I'd drop one of the video cards to get a 24" 1920x1200 monitor. Was kidding about the mouse, but your screen is the equivalent of your speakers.
On the monitor issue, up until about 15 mins ago I thought I had bought a 24", haha. It was a $300 difference for the extra 2 inches. While I'd pay that and more for an extra two inches somewhere else, for the monitor I couldn't get the wife to go for it.
I've had that MB since last January. It's finiky on RAM but even my GSKILL eventually worked just fine. I haven't had any issues.
Just make sure you have good cooling. I have a 650 watt and my case has no top exhaust so it gets hot up in the top. The RAM slots are very close to the processor so if you get 2 drives in RAID, PS, and Processor all up there generating a ton of heat, it will cause issues with the memory.
I'm stable except for a random EQ2 crashes since the last update... I think that is more of a sound card issue. Was fixed for months but having problems again since Frostfell went live this year.
Otherwise I leave my PC on 24x7... been running almost constantly since last Jan with only a few re-boots once a month or so (XP SP2). No issues running any other games though.
I have the same motherboard and I thought Midnyte was aware of the issues I was having. The memory was definitely finicky when I got it, but the newest BIOS update has everything working OK in the slots they belong in (I had to put them in 2 and 4 to work before)... I think he'll be fine since they're building it.
I was happy to find out from his purchase that I could upgrade to a quad core in the not-so-distant future.

Man, I hope I have enough cooling.
Here's the case. It looks like a mesh side. That should help...I'd assume anyways.
Overall, very similar to the box I put together in August. Same graphics card, processor, similar mobo. I'm very happy with it.
Though correct me if I'm wrong, but Windows XP will not be able to take advantage of the 4 gigs of RAM, will it? I think it's capped at something like 2.5, or 3.
Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable, let's prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all. - Douglas Adams

I've heard various numbers on that. I've heard between 2.8 and 3.3 gb max. I'll live with it. I don't think Vista is the way to go yet. Maybe in 2009.

XP can just fine. Assuming you are using the 64bit version.
I have 4gb and XP shows 3.25GB available. Sure it's not the full 4. But it's more than 2. Or 3. And really I don't think I've maxxed out the memory at this time so it's not a big deal. And when/if I do go to 64bit I'll have it available. Plus since I got the 2gb sticks that leaves me with 2 slots free so can jump up to 8 if I wanted but doubt I see myself doing that. No real reason not to do it really.
Bad choice of video cards if you're an EQ2 player.
I had a 8800GTX for a few weeks in Nov and had a lot of issues.
Freezes, hitching and generally poor performance.
Most other games were OK but EQ2 was virtually unplayable with an 8800 unless I used balanced (or lower) video settings. I actually got better performance when I stuck in an old 7900.
I currently use an ATI3870 which was over $60 cheaper than the GTX and I can play EQ2 with maxed out settings (including full shadows) and get no video slowdown except in areas with a large number of players like Neriak or Qeynos Harbor.

Hahaha - dude, I'm using a GeForce 4 FX.
When I zone into Qeynos Harbor I have to wait for the Harbormaster to render before I can buy a ticket (p.s. Fuck Frostfell, all those damn candy canes and presents really add to the time it takes to do anything in a town).
When I take a griffin ride in Butcherblock or take a horse to Kelethin I have to wait for the terrain to render before I step or I fall through the world and get sent to the safe spot (Fairy Nursery!).
I could provide some kickass screenshots!
Yes, I'm planning to either replace my PC or my video card (AGP) depending upon bonus money (still TBD).

Is that something posted in their forums as an issue that everyone with a 8800GTX is having? Or is that mainly just based on your own experiences?

It's a well documented problem that I have personally encountered.

Just fyi, I have an 8800 GTX and was having all sorts of issues with EQ2. Then I just updated to the newest drivers (they came out after Christmas, I believe) and now have no issues. I'm dual boxing on the same computer so I normally keep the settings at balanced or below anyway.
I am wondering though, to get better performance for the dual boxing, should I get a second 8800 or upgrade my processor? Right now I have an intel core 2 duo 6600 2.4ghz. Which I think is just silly to have to upgrade, but I'm thinking the second card will not help all that much with this game, eh?
Maybe just the two more gigs (to make it 4) of ram will be enough.

No, with multicore processor and video cards, you can pretty effectively run 2 instances of World of Warcraft or EQ2 on one high end PC. In WoW when leveling alts, i play a priest on the 2nd monitor, and neither instance of the game ever drop below 30fps.

Wow, they is thick, huh?
I think he meant that 'dual-boxing' by itself implies that two computers are involved, two 'boxes' if you will. But okay!
yeah, you understood.
I cannot think of any gaming experience I have had that can compare to me playing my bard and necro in a group that Gster (or was it Heavymeat) was pulling for. I had the bard constantly twisting, doing CC on multiple mobs, and meleeing when able on one computer, and I had my necro pumping out damage on the other. Somehow I also managed NOT to dot my CC'd mobs, which many players seem to have a problem with when they are only controlling one...

I would very much disagree with you, considering how "dual-boxing" commonly refers to playing two instances of a game these days, versus the original meaning of using 2 computers to play 2 instances of a game. Furthermore, "box" in reference to a computer has become convoluted due to new computers basically being multiple computer in one case, and I have commonly heard box refer to one core on a processor (this is from non-programming people though, they refer to it (correctly) as a thread).
Multi-boxing in EQ was a great deal of fun. My favorite memory was one time when Sueven was over for a weekend, but AFK, and I needed to control both characters. The fun part was that the computers were separated by about 12 feet, and i would kick against the walls to push myself quickly between the computer, while in my computer chair.

Your post is the first time I have heard dual-core processors referred to as boxes. Most people I know realize the difference between having two computers (boxes/cases/etc) and two cores on a processor (processors/CPU/etc). I had never, until this thread, heard of playing two instances of a game on one computer referred to as dual-boxing. Obviously that has somehow changed since even the almighty wikipedia currently has both listed. That said, I still laugh in your general direction at referring to dual-boxing in this manner!
Also, contrary to most of the assumptions EQ, not everyone that dual-boxed used ShowEQ or any other program that assisted the process.

Yeah, I have never heard it anywhere but at our customer's site (a large insurance agency), and never by anyone who actually knew what they were talking about regarding technology. I swear those people don't need food, but live off buzz-words instead.

I agree! I work for one of the nation's largest auto insurer's as a licensed agent/supervisor, and the buzz-words and acronyms could rival those of in-game trade channels for EQ, EQ2, and WoW :/
I submitted feedback on a proposal to call something APR last year. It had nothing to do with the more common usage, and it would be used externally. My manager wasn't too happy with me submitting the feedback as "to the Favorite Acronym Department" though. Those in charge of the project had a good sense of humor though.

After I left Veeshan, I spent some time on another server 2boxing a bard/shammy for a while... So much fun.
Must have kept you on your toes, lol. I couldn't 2box on my bard, I always took twisting songs too seriously and didn't use any macros or anything to do it.
Still remember.....
