FPS for my PC

Post by Bagar- »

I used to be a really big FPS player... back when the PS2 and N64 were popular and Goldeneye was considered to be an awesome game. :p

After playing EQ and WoW for the last 6 or 7 years, i'm really out of the FPS loop. I don't own any consoles newer than my ps2 and xbox and don't plan to, and I don't even know where those are in my house to be honest.

I'd like to get a good FPS for my PC that I can play when i'm not on wow. I do not want to play online. I just want a FPS where I can blow shit up for a half an hour and then turn it off.

So basically, no online crap, and no bullshit where I have to play for three hours to find a checkpoint.

Suggestions please!

If they can be downloaded online and don' cost over 20-30 dollars, that would be a plus. But I don't mind stopping by gamestop or something if I have to :p.

Yeah, Rainbow Six: Vegas would probably be your best bet on the PC. I am not sure how the Ghost Recon titles work on it as I have only played those on the 360. Vegas has a good single player pace, and many checkpoints. I used to play over my lunch breaks, so 30 minute playsessions will still get you to the next save.

Deus Ex is great if you don't mind dated graphics. My favorite single player game of all time. Plus, you can download it from Steam and I dont think its going to be over 30$

My favorite non-online shooters in the past few years....

Half Life 2 (+ Episodes 1/2)
F.E.A.R.
Far Cry
Stalker : Shadow of Chernobyl (more of a FPS/RPG hybrid)

The first (and only) Sin episode (Emergence) was also great fun but kinda short. I bought it for $10 and played it through a couple of times. Too bad they won't be making any more episodes. :(

Looking at Steam, there's some pretty good deals....
Hitman 2 for $10 or all the Hitman games for $30.
Orange Box for $50 which includes HL2, Ep1, Ep2, Portal and TF2 (if you ever get the urge to have some fun online)
Call of Duty 2 for $20. I don't usually like WW2 shooters but COD2 was exceptional.
I've got 99 problems and I'm not dealing with any of them - Lay-Z

oh crap, hitman 2.

hitman 2 is an awesome game to just fuck around in. hilariously exaggerated ragdoll physics.

seriously walk up to a guy with a shotgun and shoot him point blank at an upward angle.

Also there's a level where you can dress up in a fireman suit and chase a shirtless fat guy around with a fireaxe. No other gaming moment has had me in tears like that

If you really don't mind dated graphics (1996), Duke Nuke'em 3D is great. It still has my favorite set of weapons for a FPS.

in terms of weapon selection and functionality, Blood trumps all others

oh man, i forgot to mention

in hitman 2 there's a level where you execute a naked fat guy (not the same fireaxe fat guy, a different one) while hes in his Luxury Loft hot tub. You can leave it at that, but if you want style points you can then drag his naked corpse out onto the window ledge and drop him 100 stories

I agree with the CoD2 suggestion assuming you're not tired of the WW2 genre. I'm sure it can be found fairly cheap these days.

I haven't heard these games mentioned in about 10 years! i used to fucking love Blood...

If anyone could find a torrent or DL link for either of them i'd be forever greatful! I wonder if it'll even run on my PC now.

i actually think i got blood off of gametap or somewhere like that- it was fairly recent that I got it

it was bugged though, everything was running at like 30 times hyperlight speed probably because of incompatible hardware or windows or something. shame because i just wanted to nail some of those robed fanatics with a flare gun and watch them run around screaming just like old times :}

Blood was a DOS game using the Build engine (Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Redneck Rampage). I have no idea how hard it would be to get up and running on XP or Vista... or if it would even work at all.
I have fond memories of those games and playing them again would probably ruin those fond memories.

Monolith has a shareware demo up on their FTP.
ftp://ftp.lith.com/pub/blood/blood/
Amazon has the full version for like $19

Blood 2 was built on the Lithtech engine which can run on XP or Vista with a few kludges. I managed to get Shogo MAD (also a Lithtech based game) running on Vista but it crashed a lot and the sound was kinda fucked.

Demo link from Monolith's FTP site: ftp://ftp.lith.com/pub/blood2/b2demoa.zip

Amazon seems to have it for sale from $7.99

Serious Sam is still one of the most intense, pulse pounding FPS games ever made. I always liked how the music would build in direct response to the amount of enemies/action on the screen. There must've been momments where you had to fight 4-500+ enemies at once. Fuck the story, it's all about killing!

I actually went ahead and downloaded CoD2 last night. Really enjoying it so far. It was 20 dollars.

Will try out some of the other titles later!

I'm going to second FarCry for the first half of the game at least...

I played through the first half -- which is full of great comedic conversations, stalking through jungles and harassing the bad guys along with jeep chases, big explosions and much more -- in under 4 days.

The second half after the game gets stupid hard took me over a month to beat because it just kept pissing me off.

Still worth the $ for the first half though, and from your description, I think it's just what the doctor ordered for you.

F.E.A.R. was also good if you have a higher end PC.
The new Doom was good too, I enjoyed that, that game kept me on the edge of my seat.
So did F.E.A.R. that stupid game made me jump more than a few times. Play those two with headphones turned up decently loud.

um...

Deus Ex is absolutely amazing, Deus Ex 2 isn't so much, so make sure you don't mix them up.

I recently purchased the Hitman Trilogy and am now on the 3rd game.. I love this series, very fun to play. Great games and definitely worth a try. Could probably get torrents of all 3.

For one player shooting, Half Life 2 is my favorite (surprise).

For something that nobody has mentioned, try Red Faction. I don't know if it ever came out on the PC, but I played it for PS2 when it came out 5 or so years ago and it was a blast. Great story, great levels, great guns that sound awesome, great bosses, plus you can blow walls up. I've played all the good shooters and this one always brings me back.

How good is your PC?

If its somewhat dated, Half Life 2 and all its episodes (Just get the Orange Box, has everything in it), is your best bet. It runs very well on old hardware.

Dell XPS 7200, pretty loaded, got it about 6 months ago.

Still working my way through COD2, not sure what i'll get when I beat it. Keep up the suggestions!

Playing CoD2 at anything other than highest difficulty feels like cheating. 20 bullets to the face later, you duck around the corner and have full health again. Whee.
