Sesame Street: For adults only

Apparently the Sesame Street I watched as a child was unsafe and might have been hazardous to my emotional health.

According to the New York Times Sunday Magazine

Sunny days! The earliest episodes of “Sesame Street” are available on digital video! Break out some Keebler products, fire up the DVD player and prepare for the exquisite pleasure-pain of top-shelf nostalgia.

Just don’t bring the children. According to an earnest warning on Volumes 1 and 2, “Sesame Street: Old School” is adults-only: “These early ‘Sesame Street’ episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child.”

You’ve got to be kidding me. Sesame Street debuted on PBS in 1969. (For the record, I was born in 1974) I remember Bert and Ernie before anyone cared if they shared a room and I remember when Big Bird’s imaginary friend Snuffleupagus was imaginary. And I remember when Cookie Monster was still allowed to eat cookies.

Apparently, part of the problem with the Old School episodes includes the parody “Monsterpiece Theatre” where Cookie Monster (a.k.a Alistair Cookie) has a pipe sticking out of his mouth.

Truth be told, I look at Thomas the Train and Dora the Explorer and wish they were a little more real. On Sesame Street the kids looked like me, which was no small feat, as an African American kid when the black kids on sitcoms tended to have growth disorders. Flesh-and-blood kids with accents, problems, friends and questions.

I can’t wait to show the DVDs to my kid.

Christ went to bed uttering something along the lines of, "fuck ya'll.."

People take their little kids to R rated movies.
Sesame Street can't be worse than that.
All my Sesame Street viewing was thankfully pre-Elmo. I really hate Elmo.

As a kid, I didn't like Sesame Street. I didn't like the Muppets either. I didn't get Kermit's fascination with Miss Piggy, or was it the other way around?

I liked the Electric Company.

This had to be a subtle warning about sexually transmitted diseases!

Check out Morgan Freeman as Easy Reader!

Notice that although they mention smoking and Morgan wants matches, they specifically say he doesn't smoke! (as opposed to Sesame Street and the pipe fiasco!)
