iPod Touch Review

Post by Winnow »

I figured I'd wait a few days before commenting on the iPod Touch I purchased. I wanted to take the time to set it up, play around a bit, learn the basics and try it out on the road and at work.

This isn't comprehensive. It's mostly things that caught my attention or that are important to my use of the player.

The Positives:

-First, it's important not to lose sight of the primary function of any portable media player: delivering music, videos and Podcasts in an efficient way to the mobile user. The iPod Touch kicks ass as a portable music/video/Podcast player. The Touch UI is outstanding. I can't think of anything to complain about with the user interface. It's intuitive and smooth. I'm sold on the touch interface for small screen portable devices. (more on the UI later)

-The Touch connected to my wireless network with ease. I entered my password once and the Touch now recognizes my network whenever I'm home.

-As has been explained by others on this forum (Fash, etc), hacking the Touch was as easy as entering a URL into Safari. This installs an "installer" icon/app and lets you access all the other third party apps for the Touch/phone and install them with one click if you choose to. There's nothing earth shattering yet for the Touch but plenty of little apps that can be useful at times and they don't take that much room. Hacking the Touch adds lots of potential bonus usefulness from the iTouch, adding to it's value IMO. A+

-With portable video interfaces, I always set the "screen sleep" to a short duration for battery conservation. With the iTouch, I was able to set the screen sleep mode to not kick in for 10 minutes as there is a physical button located on top of the player that allows you to put the player into sleep mode instantly without stopping the audio or whatever the player is doing at the time. To re activate the screen, you hit the same button or the apps button and swipe your finger across the bottom of the screen to unlock the player. If you don't swipe your finger, the player goes right back to sleep in 5 seconds or so...this is nice as it prevents accidental button activation, but more importantly, allows you to hit a button to quickly see the time and what's playing and then let the player go back t o sleep without battery draining worries. I really like this setup. I hate having the screen go black on me if I don't touch something for a short amount of time. You might get distracted while browsing something..music, the net, etc and it would be a pain to have to reswipe/unlock to resume your activity. Sleep button: A+

-This is not the main purpose of the player, but web browsing is awesome on the Touch. You can surf regular web pages and have them still be functional due to the pinch/stretch touch UI. The first time I loaded VeeshanVault in the iTouch and used the fingers to stretch/zoom the screen was extremely cool. The Touch is powerful enough that you can drag the webpage around quickly using your finger to scroll up/down right/left, etc. A+

-I wondered about how easy it would be to type things using the little keypad. It's not bad. Not great but better than I expected. Whatever technology they're using works well. you punch away with your fat fingers and most of the time, the Touch gets it right. This is especially noticeable while surfing. When you have page displayed very small on the Touch, the links are super small but I was impressed at how well the Touch registered my fingers clicking on the various types of links on web pages. Combined with the very cool "flick" scrolling and pinch zoom/shrinking, the UI is as good as it gets for small screen interactive functionality: A (can't give everything an A+!)

-for Leopard, and iTunes, the Cover Flow is more gimmicky than anything but on the Touch, it's useful due to actually "touching" it to move things around. It feels natural to turn the Touch on it's side to have the UI rotate into landscape mode and Cover Flow move (or video mode). Scrolling through Album covers and then touching them to flip the Album over and view/select tracks is all a pleasure to do. The nice screen size helps with all of these things.

-The 3.5" screen is a big difference over the little Nano Fatty's screen. I can watch videos on the Fatty but have to have it right in front of my face. With the iTouch, I can sit it a little away from me on the table or somewhere and still be able to see the video. No dead pixels. The screen is not the best for viewing angles to the side though: B (due to viewing angles)

-The dedicated You Tube interface works well when you have access to the net. Nice that they added that as a standard feature. It works great as an easy entertainment to fill time while out and about. (need wireless access though!)

-The 16GB is going to come in handy with the added functionality of a hacked Touch. I think comics would actually be pretty readable on this thing while there is alreadd a PDF viewer in alpha testing. As expected, the flick scrolling is great for eBook reading on it. (as is the ability to rotate it to landscape if desired)

-Battery life seems OK so far. I won't be able to go half a week without recharging like I do on the Nano but so what. As long as it's good for a day or two, I'm fine.

Negatives:

-I couldn't get Newsleecher to run on it: F

-Video podcast are listed both in audio and video. I'm debating on whether this is a negative or not. For podcasts like Diggnation that are about 30-60 minutes long, I don't have time to watch the full videos most of the time. It's actually not a bad thing to be able to choose to listen to a video podcast in audio mode. I find myself running out of time and missing some video podcasts before the next week's show is available. Having the option to listen to them in Audio mode might help as I can to that more often at work than watch videos. Still, it does kind of clutter up the audio podcast section and you might listen to an Audio podcast not remembering or knowing that it's also a video (some audio podcasts randomly post videocasts from time to time) I'll leave it as a negative but not a major one at all.

-fingerprints, greasy screen. No avoiding it! It happens and sucks but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I'd be bitching about it if it was. I do wipe my screen often. I left the original plastic cover that was on the screen when I purchased it in place. (I used scissors to cut out he place where the Apps button is because that was kind of irritating using the button through the cover) I don't feel so bad wiping the screen with the plastic film over it. Won't scratch the screen! So, touching the screen does blow but as anti-touch-where-I'm-viewing as I am, it's almost a non factor for some reason.

-The Touch comes with a little stand which works great except for one problem...the audio jack is on the bottom of the Touch so you can't use the stand in portrait mode if you have audio hooked up. Dumb. They should have placed the audio jack on the top for the Touch...don't care that other iPods have it on the bottom. Even in Cover Flow or Video modes, you need to rotate back to portrait from time to time. The stand just doesn't make sense to use which sucks because it's simple and effective otherwise. With audio, you can use cover flow to select songs, but you need to rotate to portrait mode to adjust volume, etc. I just think having the jack on the bottom was a poor design decision.

Needs:

-I bought a $20.00 clear plastic hard cover case for the Touch at Best Buy. (Brand: Griffen, called iClear). I'm very happy with the case. It covers everything except the screen but gives you a plastic protector sheet to apply to that. I'm still using the original plastic sheet cover though. The case allows for audio, USB access and access to the sleep button. The clear case is not too bulky and makes me feel much better about toting it around. I recommend getting a case or skin despite what Fash and the others prefer! : ) This clear case seems the least obtrusive/bulky. I plan on purchasing the Otter Waterproof case still for ~$40.00. Being able to have the Touch that well protected without a huge amount of added bulk appeals to me. Plus it will have cover protection as well which is nice. I hope to see one in person at Fry's later this year or early next year (they don't come out until Dec 1st) to be sure it's not too bulky and that it looks well made.

-I can't stress enough how nice it is to have a stereo Bluetooth headset to use with the Touch (or any other portable device). The little adapter that connects to the player is small enough not to interfere and fits in pockets, etc while attached to the player. Can't stand headset wires! The Logitech Bluetooth headphones I have last ~4-6 hours per charge which is plenty and have a nice range of 30 feet or so. The feel of headsets are a personal preference. These have a rubber part that hook over the ear and a bendable (adjustable) band that goes around the back/neck. The volume adjust is built into the entire right headphone (pus the top or bottom of the right earpiece to adjust volume or mute) Anyway, I'm very happy with this wireless Bluetooth headset. I hope more Stereo bluetooth headsets are on the market soon.

Summary:

The 16GB iPod Touch is an excellent portable media player. It has an outstanding interface, screen and high level of potential added usefulness from hacks. The web surfing isn't just a gimmick. With the touch controls, surfing full sized, normal web pages can be accomplished when you must from a location that doesn't have a PC available. As bad as it sounds to touch the screen you also use to view, it's not as bad as it would seem and isn't as annoying as I anticipated. (you do need to clean the screen more often due to this though)

Verdict: 9/10. Best Apple Product besides the new Apple Super Slim Keyboard. If you can afford the $389.00 for the 16GB version, I highly recommend it.

Great write-up, Winnow. Thanks for the thorough review; I have been on the fence about the Touch for a while, so this was helpful.

(p.s. typed this on my Apple keyboard)

I got to mess around with the Touch yesterday at Best Buy. I was highly impressed with the UI. I don't regret buying the Nano over it however it is a solid product.

Safari tip: (may be common knowledge but figured id mention it) double tapping on something will zoom into the width of that section. like in my webmail, if i double tap one of the senders names, it zooms right into that column width. works on images too. it lessens the need to pinch zoom.

you're right tho, it's accuracy with clicking is pretty sweet at times. i'm impressed that i can usually hit the little icon for viewing the newest post in a thread without too close of a zoom.

text input speed is acquired, i can go pretty fast even putting in my 26 char hex wep key.

the sleep button is the best ever. my display is set to max brightness and to never power off automatically. with the iLight program (its just a white screen) i used it to change the tire on my truck a few weeks ago. it kicks ass as a flashlight too. wide angle pure white light for when its pitch black outside. (a protective skin would be nice, i admit)

Thanks for the comments on the review. I try (sometimes) to give clear and thought out reviews!

I spent this evening getting the SummerBoard and Customize apps to work.

While jailbreaking your Touch/Phone is easy, everything isn't explained to you. It took me awhile to figure out that I needed to install te BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH in order to get things running. Just FYI, you'll need to FTP into your Touch and set a lot of directories and files to cmod 755, otherwise some things won't work.

Ever stranger is the Custom App...the directions on that one are to open and close the app 30+ times and it will eventually no crash. This took me the longest to figure out. The app is made for the iPhone so it won't work on the Touch...but you must first install the iPhone version off the installer, open it anywhere from 10-50 times before it actually works (strange) (after changing the files to 755 of course), and then copy over the Touch version of the App, located in these very helpful Touch specific forums:

http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/index.php

(currently the forums above just went down to be moved to a different server but will be back up again. There is a bunch of helpful info on the Touch located on the forums.)

So, after jailbreaking your Touch, be sure to install the BSD Subsystem and OpenSHH, and then follow the instructions located on the forum above on installing SummerBoard (after setting up FTP with your Touch, which is also explained in the forums.)

When the forums come back up, I'll try to link the various help threads for these things.

Just remember that SummerBoard and Custom apps will take some file permissions modding and for me, took copying some files into various directories.

The effort, while taking longer than it should have because it wasn't clear (it's a hack though so it's totally forgivable and I enjoy this stuff), I have a very cool new dashboard (used SummerBoard, Greyday theme), and I've changed some of the icons. I'm using a bullet icon as my swipe/unlock thingy.

Neat! The basics all work great. Some of the customizations take a little fiddling. I wish I knew about the forum I linked above when I started.

I'd spice this up with some screenshots of the Touch but the Screenshot app and Dock app which includes a screenshot function both don't seem to want to save. The Sketches App won't save to the photos either. More stuff to work on!

hey, got the dock app to kind of take a screenshot. I found the image in the temp folder:

edit:

figured out screenshots. You can only take one at a time and have to transfer it to the PC before taking another. Here are some more SummerBoardThemes I grabbed to try out. Nice variety. This is just the first page of my apps. You can have several pages.

Most of the installer apps have a short note. Something like, "BSD Subsytem must be installed first". or "works with App <X>installed"

Being as Summerboard is so critical to things, they should explain about the OpenSSH/FTP/Cmod 755's that might need to be done.

The forums linked above clear things up.

I like this theme the best so far:

Image

It's very clean and has custom icons for the music /videos/photos/itunes.

It has the worst NES icon though which is funny because the NES icon is the most diverse between the other themes. I need to swap the grey theme NES icon with it.

Just a couple notes today.

First, the Touch is working great. Still very happy with it.

-The sleep button works great. I like how it will blank the screen and keep playing an audio source, but if you are playing a video source, it will blank and pause the video. It's perfect for watching videos in situations you need to turn the player off fast (work) and be able to resume where you left off quickly.

-The iSolitaire game really shows off the Touch Screen. Draging around the cards and piles is so cool.

-I didn't realize that the Touch had full "gryo" control and not just for rotating from portrait to landscape. There's a proof of concept demo game called "Balls" where you can hold the Touch flat and move the ball all over the screen just by tilting it. Nice.

-someone figured out how to activate the audio/in mic on the Touch so it sounds like it's just a matter of time before a VOIP setup is working with the Touch. That's kinda cool.

I haven't had much time to play around with the Touch yet but it's got tons of potential for third party apps. Even without hacking it, the Touch is an excellent product.

-glad I got the clear hard case for it. It's nice being able to manhandle it a bit and place it in areas that you don't worry about scratching it. Feels better holding it with the case IMO as well. I wipe the screen a bunch so the protective film is a must. I see the scratches in the film. Better that than the screen. I also like the clear plastic on the back. It doesn't show the mucky finger printed-up back like the polished metal back does. I think an ultimate solution must include a kickstand of some sort though. I have a sticky pad at work set on an angled surface right under my LCD screen at work. I place the Touch on the sticky pad which has just enough grip to hold it in place. It's a great spot for viewing videos while working (or appearing to work!)

-played around with the photos. As nice is it is to flip through the pictures, and zooming, etc, I'm looking forward to trying out some PDFs.

I could almost see myself getting a video tablet with the same res as my main screen and just mirror the two, using the tablet to move around, and the standard LCD for unmucked viewing. That's the only way I can see using a touch screen and avoiding messing up the screen on a full size PC setup.

TTR w/Guitar hero mod might be the best game yet on the iTouch!

So cool.

TTR (TapTapRevolution) is just another game you can install using the installer. The Guitar Hero mod is basically a skin to make it look better, which it does.

What's cool about this game is that you can access your iTunes library on your player, and the game will check the internet database to see if anyone has created a "beat" for it. If so, you can download that Beat and play your local song to the game. If no one has made one, ou can make one yourself by using the "crate new beats". I did exactly this. I chose Buster Poindexer, HOT HOT HOT, song from my library. It starts playing and you tap away with whatever you feel like and the game records the taps. Hot Hot Hot is a good one, lots of three tappers.

I finished tapping out to the song and it saved it. I think it uploaded it to the internet so now others can use my version of Hot Hot Hot with the game if they want.

When I went back to my library and choose Hot Hot Hot again, and chose the song, I get this:

Image

Me playing the song (screwing up because I was busy taking the screenshot!)

Image

It let me post my high score to the internet. I see some other songs online to grab but don't see my own so not sure how that works. If you download this game, see if you can find my song. It's listed under Fuzzy. (You'd have to have Buster Poindexter's Song in your iTunes though for it to match my beat with the song) i checked a few other of the more popular songs in my iTunes and they had beats aready created on the net.

I had the most fun creating my own version of the song.

Image

TTR/GH has a very nice interface for being third party hack. I like how the star wars type scrolling through your songs works. Excellent app for being a hack!

The Touch looks great! I would love to get one...perhaps I will in the coming year. I just got my first MP3 player on Friday - I got a Zune 30GB on sale for Black Friday for $69.99 - so I can't balk at the price at all. I know a lot of people do not care for the Zune - but I did my research and all I really wanted was an MP3 player that played music - the videos/photos and other stuff is all gravy.

I haven't held a Touch yet...I am afraid if I get to play with one my Zune will obsolete before Christmas arrives!

VoIP on iPod Touch CONFIRMED WORKING!
Source: Touch Mods Blog

So the impossible has been made possible! It appears that eok has managed to get the SIP app from the Nintendo DS ported over to the ipod touch and it WORKS! They still haven't managed to get audio in/out to work yet, but its only a matter of days before they get this sorted. From the Touch Mods blog:
Amazing news, guys! I have no words! We all knew it will come.

So here it is:
eok did manage to make the Nintendo DS-based SIP app from Samuel running on the iPod Touch!!
Samuel's page here: svsip.free.fr
His SW does use pjsip from pjsip.org.

eok wrote:

I'm still really liking my iTouch. It gets used every day for audio and video podcasts to/from work and at work.

For those that have the Fatty, I really like that as well. I look at the Fatty as it sits by my touch when it's charging and wish I could use both. iTouch > Fatty but if I didn't have the iTouch, I'd be very happy with the Fatty. I'll probably give it to someone as I have the Zen Vision, 4GB Nano, 8GB Nano Fatty and iTouch. Only need one! The Zen and 2nd Gen Nano are dated but the Fatty could be getting some use somewhere.

You probably had the NES emulator which was out months ago. The SNES emulator just recently came out.
You're probably right!

I use my iTouch everyday but although I've got all those cool apps, it's mostly for the audio and video podcasts.

I still highly recommend the iTouch 16gb as long as you get a clear case for it (I still have original film on the face of it to protect the screen as well). If you're not into the video so much, get the 8gb Nano Fatty which also is outstanding and more portable friendly.

Yeah, SNES came out recently, NES has existed for a long time.

Also, I beat my iTouch to hell: being in the same pocket as my cell phone, being the music player for my car (which causes it to fly around since it's not mounted to anything), and I throw it around my desk while listening to it and adjusting headphone position. There is not a single scratch on the screen (the back sucks, i wish they would have gone with the frosted medal look instead of shiny).

My back is nice and unscratched!

I also don't understand why they go with the shiny metal look. dumb.

Anyways, I'm keeping the film on! ..and I like my clear hard case. gives me a better grip on it.

I'm still considering the waterproof case if Fry's ever gets it.

Does anyone who follows Apple's announcements more closely than me know if there are any plans for any iPods (Touch or otherwise) with a lot of storage coming out soon? I've recently been meticulously re-organizing my music and need something in the 80Gb+ range. Is the Classic my only option?

I'd say within a year you'll see the 16GB ITouches expand to 32GB and Possibly 64GB. 128GB is a ways off. Even 64GB seems slightly far fetched within a year's time frame. The solid state ram offerings seem to double each year. 2-4-8-16-

I have no interest in carrying my full collection on one player. I have such varied taste in music that I could hate something today, and I might have to hear it 10 times this weekend. I have never had a problem with not having enough music on my iPod, even when I was using a 2gig nano. The only time I ever really had a potential space issue was when I was putting too many movies and tv shows on at once. There really was no need to do so, since I was not going to have any kind of opportunity to actually watch them at work. :P

My main reason for wanting my whole collection on one player is for use in my car, at work, and on our boat in the summer. I'm sick of having CD's (I keep a couple hundred in a gigantic case in my car) and I never know what I'm going to feel like listening to at any given time. I have a small one (4GB or so) that is good for working out and whatnot, but I'd like an additional one that provided me with the ability to listen to whatever I want at any given time.

I'll probably just go with a Classic for now.

It sounds as if that is your best option, especially if you are already using iTunes. The 80 gig is pretty sleek, has pretty good battery life, and if you are using it predominently for music, perfect for your needs. The price is actually pretty competitive as well.

AAPL sucks, the new Nano Fatty and iTouch are nice. (for podcasts, both audio and video)

I originally made my Creative post back when the Zen was going up against the old ipods. The Creative zen was hands down better across the board than the ipod (both hard drive models)

Audiowise, that still holds true even with the new models. The Creative players still have much better video support as well.

Unfortunately, I use my portable media players almost exclusively for listening to podcasts which Apple/iTunes handles the best. 4GB Nano was bought for me. I purchased the 8GB Fatty and 16GB iTouch.

Most people don't seem to be as into podcasts as me so I'd recommend getting something other than an Apple player. On the other hand, people should really check out some of the podcasts available out there. I watch short little 5-15 minute video podcasts covering a broad range of interests and it makes my lunch a lot more enjoyable...and work for that matter as I listen/watch them while "working" as well.

I tried putting together a podcast recommendation thread but there was zero interest.

Is Creative that company that used to make passable soundcards? Who knew they were still in business...

Imagine that. A company that deals with "sound" making mp3 players! Apple may visually look better when laying on a counter but the Zens perform better.

They also have the fist 32GB Flash player:

edit: actually, they also have SD card support so Sylvus could buy a 32GB Zen along with a 32GB flash and have his 64GB.

Wow. I'd almost never even heard of them. Since their sound card business has gone to shit, one can only hope they're dominating the portable media player market so they stay afloat. Lucky for you and I we own media players for a company that'll be around to support them!

Quality products don't need support!

Plus, take a long look at Apple. They're all glitz.

Their LCD monitors are overpriced and suck. The Dell 2404 blew the doors off Apple's 24" monitor...price, viewing angle, lag, etc etc etc.

Their computers are slower yet more expensive than Windows based PCs. (they have shiny cases though)

Apple is good at marketing. The only outstanding products they have right now are the touch phone and player. The rest can be found better and cheaper elsewhere.

Their plummeting stock agrees with this notion. Apple is on the way down or will remain flat like Microsoft. The Mac Air impressed nobody and is priced off the charts while Toshiba has a much lighter/cheaper notebook (with optical drive) in the same LCD size class. A 65% drop in AAPL's stock price since late December supports this argument.

I like the keyboard though! (after a few windows friendly tweaks)

Slower? More expensive? Now you're the one baiting in this thread. :P

Agree on the first point. Agree that the touch and player rules. Disagree on point three.

The stock was overvalued because of the market, not because of anything Apple did directly. The correction was merited. I also think the market wasn't impressed with the MacWorld announcements.

Agree. You should use OS X... no tweaking necessary. :P

I remember when Ad-Lib cards and compatibility were all the rage. I got my first SoundBlaster in 1991!

Oh and 17 years later I still have a SoundBlaster (albeit a different one) in my current PC. Onboard sound may cut it for most people but I demand more!

(As far as support goes Creative pretty much sucks. I couldn't find the install CD that came with the card (and you can't do a lot of things without the console application) and they said too bad it was out of warranty. I mean seriously.. A fucking install CD. Luckily I was able to find an ISO image of it hosted elsewhere. After a year, or whatever particular warranty period you happen to have, they don't give a shit about their customers. That definitely will make me think a lot harder about considering another one of their products in the future.)

According to this:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/05/offi ... available/

A 32GB iPod Touch is available immediately if you want to pay $499.00 for it. (and same price for 16GB iPhone)
