CNN "modifies" news story gets caught

Post by Tyek »

It's a case of "he said -- but you didn't get to hear it."

Quizzed by CNN about whether he has ever used steroids, pro wrestler John Cena quickly responded, "Absolutely not!" -- then offered nearly three minutes of follow up. But when CNN made its edit to their special, "Death Grip: Inside Pro Wrestling," Cena's response was replaced with: "People conceive things because performance enhancing drugs have got the spotlight. It's a hot thing to talk about. I can't tell you that I haven't, but you'll never be able to prove that I have."

Needless to say, the folks at World Wrestling Entertainment are pissed! They've posted the original, unedited video on their official website, along with the following response:

"In a country in which the news media is highly suspect, and the quality of unbiased reporting has been thrown into the trash can, CNN has stooped to new depths. Notwithstanding the fairness, or lack therein, of CNN's recent piece entitled "Death Grip: Inside Pro Wrestling," perhaps the best example of how CNN misrepresents and unfairly presents their biased, if not illegal, point of view is the comparison of WWE's unedited video above to CNN's edited version. CNN's depiction of John Cena as it relates to steroids is not only professionally and morally wrong, but damaging to his character." Now 'dems fightin' words!

UPDATE: A rep for CNN has issued the following statement: "CNN has reviewed the footage of Mr. Cena and additional video from that interview has been added to the program which aired in replays of the program on Sunday."
As much shit as Fox News gets (rightly so), I hope people do not think the other "News agencies" are doing anything but trying to boost ratings and to do that they make shit up. This should have been bigger news, but since it is wrestling CNN seems to have skated on this one.

I have gotten to the point that I rarely watch any news since most of it is crap. Everything now is BREAKING NEWS and overhyped tripe. Most broadcasters today seem to be like Anchorman, they read the news and god forbid the teleprompter goes out.

Well ok yes, CNN has over-played a story about Wrestling, I'm sure Midnyte will be outraged.

However, comparing that to FOX beating the war drum with it's (apparently) evangelist driven agenda.. it's a stretch.

I have no proof, other than my knowledge of how the world works, but John Cena has done steroids.

It's not cool for CNN to make things up, and consider this an official rebuke on my part, but I'd rather they'd been caught making up a story that wasn't true.

Who is to say that this is the only story they have changed? They happened to get caught this time and ONLY because WWE was videotaping the same interview. I would guess that this is hardly the first time they have done this. They barely acknowledged the wrongdoing, stating simply that they would include the whole comment next time they aired it. If this was a story they made up about a presidential candidate on either side you can bet it would get significantly more exposure.

You don't know me very well at all. I don't get outraged. I'm not surprised by this at all. They all do it. They just don't get caught very often.

Sarcasm, I just couldn't think of another wrestling nut... anyway, 90% of news is slanted towards the editor's political agenda. The rest is on the Daily Show.

I just think it needs to be a bigger story before editing the story is a story in itself.

BTW: The best example of hillarious editing to change the tone of the story was Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

I don't know about that, there's plenty of dirt on both sides of the isle that never comes to light for whatever reason. Almost like it's a vast advertisement driven conspiracy :)

If you truly get your news from the daily show, instead of watching it for a chuckle, then that explains a lot.

The Daily Show is slanted towards a comedic agenda :P

And no, we don't get the Daily Show here :( Nice try though.
