Need Mac Help... i know i know...
I hate macs... i'll never use one.. But I told a friend I'd fix it for her.. she's got a G4 notebook running OS X 10.3.9... The problem is she's on DSL... She cant configure the DSL modem access the internet and she wants to setup a wireless network. Only problem is, the airport wont install because she needs OS X 10.4. I cant update to 10.4 because i cant connect to the internet with her DSL for the reasons above... its a vicious circle... so i'm looking for ideas(other than destroy it which is what i suggested).
Any other info you need let me know.
Thanks.

Re: Need Mac Help... i know i know...
well you can't upgrade to 10.4 with an internet connection... it's a whole new version of the OS... so you can probably acquire Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 on the newsgroups or other places, and then install that first.
thats one option, the other is to find 10.3 drivers for the airport. like http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ ... x1033.html and put it on a disc or flash drive to get it to the system.
need more?

Speaking of the Mac OS.. I'm interested in making a virtual machine running OSX. Is it possible to burn the Mac OS disk with a PC (or better yet, mount it with something like UltraISO or DaemonTools), assuming one could even find it for download somewhere?

Re: Need Mac Help... i know i know...
right... 10.3.9 is the end of the line for panther. 10.4 is Tiger and is a separate SKU.Soreali wrote:So Fash the update that Apple has to DL 10.4.1 on their website wont do shit? 10.5 is almost out (Jaguar) Theres a RC build of 10.5 out on the newsgroups that may be the final, I haven't tried it yet (just make sure it doesn't say osx86)
So the easiest solution is just to get the 10.3 airport drivers and be done with it... If you really want to take care of her, get tiger or jaguar... If you have any problems getting her wireless set up, let me know.

Your friend will have to drop ~ 120$ for 10.4. Personally I would wait for 10.5 IF it's compatible with her Mac.
Have you tried searching Google for 10.3.9 and Airport? I'm pretty sure that 10.3 supports it however I've never tried it myself.

Re: Need Mac Help... i know i know...
a virtual machine on your pc running osx?... like, the osx86 hackint0sh version of osx? If so, it will mount just fine in image format because it's meant for a pc... Otherwise, there's no simple way to burn a true mac bootable disc on a pc. I swear I've done it before though.Siji wrote:Speaking of the Mac OS.. Yes. You shouldn't have any problems configuring it. I assume they provided a login/pw for the DSL, which you'll set up in the airport tool.Soreali wrote:Heres a stupid question... Is verizon DSL even compatible with a MAC?

DSL or Cable or FIOS has little to nothing to do with what OS you're using.
I agree with Fash, wait for 10.5 (Leopard

Re: Need Mac Help... i know i know...
If it's a G4 slower than the 867mhz processor, 10.5 won't be an option from what I've read (Link). I'm by no means an Apple expert, and haven't messed around with Macs in years, so take anything I say on the subject with a several large grains of salt.

Re: Need Mac Help... i know i know...
I got 10.4 Tiger in, and installed the airport drivers that came with the airport... still have the same issue with the Verizon DSL application... I launch it and just get a blank white window... nothing else... And I have to Force Quit it... She has to get a new wireless adapter for it so once thats done I'm going to try and just work around it...
wtf do you do when an application wont launch on a Mac? I'm very ignorant on the subject... Do I need to re-download the application and try again or something??

imnsho, you shouldn't need software from verizon... you should be able to configure it without that.

Re: Need Mac Help... i know i know...
see the problem is I run safari, and it throws me right to the verizon wireless page to configure the account... which she already has (has a username and password already)... anytime you try to go to another page it throws you right back to the page... so i said fuck it and just tried to reconfigure it and it downloads an application to run...when you go to run the application i just get the white blank page... and i have no f'ing idea why... but its frustrated me to no end... and just made me hate Macs even more...

You said she bought a wireless router, right?... you should be browsing to the routers administration page, and then configuring the login/password inside there. what say ye?

Re: Need Mac Help... i know i know...
well she just got a wireless adapter so i'll probably go there tonight and try to hook it up before the yanks game...hence why im gonna try and just go around the DSL all together and see what happens... is there anything special i need to do to get into the admin page of the airport? Or does that kinda work like windows??

Re: Need Mac Help... i know i know...
pretty sure it's different... on a pc you'd just browse to the ip, but with a mac you use the airport configuration tool... once inside you should be able to figure it out regardless... i have faith in you.
