3 Rings of Death
Its the awesome new Xbox game where after an update, one in three consoles fails.
I played some Oblivion last night, just for yucks, and when I shut down the console, it locked up. Next morning, I try to power it up and 3 rings of death await me. How many of you have had this happen?
I have researched what is involved with getting the Xbox replaced and regaining the same rights over the downloaded content and games that my wife and I already purchased, and it doesn't look pretty, even though we have full warrenty. Some add ons cannot even be re-downloaded anymore (certain limited time Oblivion updates) and there is some question on whether or not it will be possible to recover downloaded content to GH2. I will update this thread with what happens with our situation, but I am interested to hear from anyone else about their experiences with dead 360s.

War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Re: 3 Rings of Death
When my first 360 died I had no issues recovering any of my stuff. Then again, I didn't have GH2 at the time so I can't comment on that.
I have had bad luck with Oblivion overall, I had constant issues with it freezing (which I never had with other games) and other minor issues, which I feel may have contributed to it breaking.

Re: 3 Rings of Death
I did not lose any of my content when I had my 360 replaced this Spring. I manually took the HD off of the old unit and placed it on the new one at the counter at Best Buy. The only thing I had to do was replace the factory default settings on the system/networking screens.

Re: 3 Rings of Death
If you have to send the thing in to MS to get fixed, I would suggest just not sending the HD in with it at all. I have heard of maybe 1 instance where someone's HD was the issue, but I have a handful of people I know that have sent the whole unit in and lost the shit on their HD even though it wasn't a HD issue.
If you do this, the only issue you will have is not being able to access your arcade games/dowloaded content while offline.
Hope that helps, but I'm a retarded broken record, and utterly incapable of making a valid point, let alone type a coherent post, so maybe not.

Re: 3 Rings of Death
I mentioned in the other thread about a friend of mine who just had the same thing happen. He's owned the 360 for just under 3 months
He's having the exact same concerns as you about DLed content. I'll pass along anything that may be of help that he may find out and direct him to this thread for your updates as well.

Re: 3 Rings of Death
I just recently got my Xbox back from being repaired. All my downloaded content (Like the oblivion expansion, arcade games, etc) was stored on my hard drive. Plus, while I was without my Xbox, I regularly played at my friends house who also had one. Once I recovered my gamertag on his console, I was able to download all my arcade games and everything without having to pay again. Apparently Xbox keeps track of everything you have paid in the event you want to redownload things.
In terms of problems with Oblivion freezing up, I think I have a few suggestions.
1. My friend bought a USED copy of the game. He had a problem that when he reached a specific point in the game, it froze. I gave him my copy, he got past that part, and continued on with his copy. No more problems from there on. So therefore, it might be your disk, maybe not.
2. When I first started using my xbox, I had it standing veritcally. OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of my games froze. Once I had it sitting horizontally, then I never had another problem again.
If you have the ring of death, don't sweat it. Just call customer care and order for this to be picked up. Before you do that, they will have you do a little trobleshooting, but if that doesn't work, they will send you out the shipping stuff to get you rolling.
All in all, my experience was really a pleasant one. They gave me a free month of Xbox live for everything when it was done.

Re: 3 Rings of Death
Funny you post this thread... I JUST got the 3 red lights on my 360 two days ago. I was playing GH2 and my 360 kept locking up. I would get about 2-5 mins of playtime and then it would come to a screeching halt. I wasn't getting the red lights, so I had no idea what it was. I've had my xbox for about a year and a half now, so I knew the general warranty was up. I was actually HOPING to get the red lights so I could send it in under the new expanded warranty. I'd also had it in the back of my mind that since I had one of the very first batch of 360's that mine was likley to break.
Well, after fooling with the console for about 20 mins and trying to squeek out enough playtime on GH@ to get through a song, the xbox locked up again. I pushed the power button and low and behold.... 3 RED LIGHTS!!! Woohooo!!
I had already looked into the problems with freezing and had tried all of the steps recommended, so when I called the support center and the guy asked me what I had done to correct the situation, I ran down the list of recommended steps. He instantly told me I needed to send it in for repairs. The guy was actually pretty helpful, and did a good job of reading his "put me at ease" script.
From my understanding, when you send your console in, they check it to make sure it isn't tampered with, and then just send you a refurbished console. I don't think you actually get your same console back, but I could be wrong as I've never done this before. From the other review that I read, it looks like total time to get the console back was roughly 1 month. Again, dunno how realistic/accurate that is.
I'm both relieved that I finally got the red lights because it means I'll be getting a problem fixed now rather than however long down the road, but I'm also aggravated because I won't have my 360 back before Bioshock is released.
How long did the process take for those of you that have already gone through it?

Re: 3 Rings of Death
Hey guys... I got an offer to buy a 360 from a co-worker. Story goes he bought it for his kid, got 3 rings of death, and sent it back to MS over a month ago. While it was gone, he bought a PS2 and the kid has been playing that.. the 360 is sitting unopened in the box from microsoft.
Core system 360
20 gig hard drive
3 or 4 games (unsure of titles).
$300. does that sound like a good price?

Re: 3 Rings of Death
Responding to Krys, you do get a "different" Xbox. The serial number on my new box is not the same as my old one. If it is new or a refurb, I can't tell, but either way this one works.
Either way, the total turn around time was about 3 weeks. Kind of long if you ask me.

I just received the box from ups today. Took me all of 2 mins to box it up and slap the return label on it. I think it's kinda smart of them to make the box look as non descipt as possible. It's just a plain white box, has no mention anywhere of xbox or any other identifier on it. At least someone was thinking!
I'm going to ship it out tomorrow and track it to see when they receive it at the return center. I live in Louisiana and the return center is in Texas, so I'm thinking 2 days at most. I'll make sure to update here when I get it back or receive an email saying they're shipping it to me.
I'm kinad ticked about the timing of it breaking. Bioshock comes out next week and I'm gonna have to wait probably 3 more weeks before I get my 360 back.

Although it does seem to take a while, they are very nice and very helpful throughout the whole process. They will email you constantly with updates as to the status of your system. IE We have (or haven't) recieved your item, the repair center is working on the system, it is done, etc.

Boy Nearly Killed Trying To Cool Xbox 360
Posted in Xbox by Klink on the August 21st, 2007
Xbox 360 Shock
A 14 year old boy from Brevard, North Carolina was nearly killed Sunday while trying to stop his Xbox 360 from overheating.
The boy’s mother told local news that his Xbox 360 kept turning itself off after about 5 minutes. Her son had read online that he could stop it from cutting off by cooling the power supply. “I saw him put the cord on top of a box in the living room”, said the boy’s mother. “When I left to go next door he was playing a game but when I got back he was laying on his back on the floor and unconscious”
While his mother was away the boy had taken the power supply and wrapped it in plastic and tape. In an attempt to cool it off, he submerged it into a pan of water with the cord still plugged in. The boy had regained consciousness by the time paramedics had arrived. He was taken to the Transylvania Community Hospital in Brevard where he spent the night.
Aside from getting knocked unconscious the boy only suffered small burns to his right hand and foot.
