Motherboard Issues...

Post by Sargeras »

I recently replaced my Soyo Socket 370 mobo with an Intel one, because my Soyo decided to take a serious dump one night. I installed the Intel one, but everytime I boot, I get a Stop 0x0000007b Error. In Microsoft-speak, that means it can't find my HD. The only solution I can think of is to just format and reinstall, but I don't want to lose everything I've got because without access to the hard drive I have no fucking way to back up my stuff. Unfortunately, I can't install the chipset drivers from DOS (using a win98se boot disk and cd-rom), because I have to be in windows to install them. And when I try to reinstall XP... after it reboots from installing, I get the 7b error again.

For the love of God and all things holy I pray someone can help me. PRS!~

Boot up with the minimal driver boot (basically a safe mode) and see if that works, if you can boot in to that then install the drivers from there.

Otherwise you really are quite pooched with that situation.

Boot in safe mood = 7b error.

I about half tempted to delete my windows directory and then reinstalling, l know that would get rid of the old chipset drivers hehe.

Is the old motherboard laying around? It could be used to fix the problem.

JSI has some good suggestions for this.

XP console registry command link -

Hope this helps.

If you do end up doing a re-format do what I do. First parition windows install, 2nd partition all data files. That way if you do have problems like that, or need to do a windows reinstall (got in the habit from 95/98) to clear shit up it makes life a lot easier.

If you do delete the windows directory from command prompt just make sure you have a movie to watch, because it takes forever. I've had to do it a couple of times because of no cdrom in that computer.

Do a parallel install of windows, on a seperate partition if that's available. That'll do the trick.

if you boot to command prompt to deltree your windows directory..

BEFORE you do that type SMARTDRV

this will load the dos version of the windows disk caching software and deleting your windows directory will take 30 seconds.

BTW when swapping mother boards especially i always recommend a from scratch install of Windows which deleteing the existing windows directory would more or less accomplish..

i do what most are suggseting here i have a 10 gig partition for the OS and a 20gig partition where i install everything else.. anything thats critical that i never lose gets saved onto a shared box on my home network that gets backed up regularly.. and when i am erally paranoid I burn it all to CD's.

Partition magic is one of the best programs out there for stuff like this.. if yor curernt hard drive isn;t full you can reposition the current partitions on the hard drive and make basically a new C: drive to do a completely fresh windows install and preserving your data at the same time..

of course if your not comfortable with that kind of stuff then do like you said and delete your windows dirctory.. i am guessing the 2 motherboards use different chipsets completely so its loading say a VIA HD controller which it can't find so it thinks there aren't any HD's in the PC.
