I hope they make it back safe.

I'm surprised how quietly the military buildup has been. It's as if the press has been asked to downplay it.

No need to downplay it, the information is all here: DefenseLINK.

I don't know, it just seems that during the first gulf war the military buildup was more publicised and talked about.

This one seems oddly quiet.

it is all over the local news in Georgia, because of Ft. Benning and other military installations that are sending people.

I've seen CNN mention it many times. For instance Wednesday, the reported the command group who would be in charge of the operation had left for Qatar. that being said, i literally have the news on all day :p

It seems to be more loccal news. I read reports from Fort Dix in NJ from area newpapers. Usually there's the pic of the guy kissing his son or daughter goodbye. Gotta be difficult

That's because for the gulf war they were galloping in to rescue democracy or whatever.
This time they don't have such a good reason and still want us to believe there is a chance war can be avoided.
I'm sure they have had a quiet word with the media and asked them to downplay things.
Must be tricky moving all those troops and vehicles around so furtively.

Not inevitable? An invasion of Iraq has been inevitable the moment that chowderhead stepped into office. He's doing the exact same thing his father did: fuck over the economy with tax cuts, defense spending and corporate relief programs, then distract the American public by going to war with Iraq. It didn't work for George H.W. Bush, and let's pray it doesn't work for Dubya.

Glad to hear of reservists being called up, it always warms my heart. I have been pretty rabidly anti-reservist since the GulfWarI, because the whiny bastards worked every last nerve of mine to the end and back. Only ones worth a damn were prior actives.

So, maybe we should just wait until Mr. Adolf Hussein drops off a nice package on one of our coastlines. Then Im sure we will agree and hold hands across America just like we did on 9/11. I'll jump on the anti-war wagon!

Bush better hurry up with his war, because more and more people are asking questions that his administration cannot or will not answer.

You know, questions like "Exactley why are we going to war with Iraq"?

I have friends and family that have lives on the line as well. If they are going to give thier life for ths country, it goddamn better be a good reason. I wouldn't be willing to give my life for any of the hersey and rhetoric I have heard so far.

If you lived in Florida you would have seen many National Guard Units went on active duty where and why on the local news. I know for a fact how many people are going from at least Cent Florida, as I being one of them. It suprises me a lot with how many reserve and National guardsmen were called up. Almost so many I would worry about Florida if a major disaster hit there.

If you really want to poke fun of G. Bush and why were going to Iraq. Look no further as to his 3 reasons for going. 1 of them was " Because their leader tried to kill my father." That right there leaves no respect to be given to him. Yet I maybe on active duty, I don't have to like the reasons behind it. Yet there are few I do agree with why were going back. But seeing one of "his" reasons for going back muchless everything else hes fucked up, I wish more people voted Gore than Bush. Were far off worse with Bush than Gore.

Guardsmen and Reservists will be gone up to a year. This is a timetable for when were called back off. Yet they said it could be up to 2 years. I really doubt that will happen and we will all be back with in 7 months from now. As for guardsmen and reservists at jobs being called up. Just onc example is the Florida Highway Patrol had at least 50 men called on active duty. Its hitting many diffrent areas people didn't expect.

I would imagine a fair amount of Guard reservists are going to be deployed domestically and in allied countries in the middle ease. I think its pretty clear that we are going to invade Iraq no matter what the consequences may be, even alienating the few western allies we have left. I also think its pretty clear that the retaliations from such an act will be massive and widespread. The fact that Bush is handling a known nuclear power differently than Iraq, reguardless of the manner in which N. Korea and Iraq have conducted themselves, will only add fuel to the fire here. Point is, we had peace within reach a decade ago and we lost it due to our own ignorance and personal agendas. And now, some people who did not make the choices that led to this state of affairs are going to go put their lives at serious risk because of our collective lack of wisdom. I hope they all make it home safely and we are the same country when the come back.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Sadam would love to get back at us by providing a nukes to people who can harm us.

He personally considers this a gang war on a national level if you read much about him.

N. Korea is entirely different than Iraq, to treat them the same would be stupid. This is just a cop out spoken by those who will hate us no matter what we do.

in my opinion there is no "IF" this war is going to happen.

it is a matter of when and "why".

we wouldnt be deploying our military to this degree as a negotiating ploy. there is no reason to believe that would have any effectiveness considering we have already been to war with Iraq once and he didnt abdicate then.

Allah is Great ...

Allah is Great ...

Allah is Great ...

Our beloved call ... the voice of our dear Prophet, the voice of Bilal, Abi Bakr, Umar, Ali and Uthman ... of Khalid, Abi Ubayda, Sa'd and Usama.

The fragrance of the Message, the voice of history, the call of the spirit carrying the body to the destination determined by Allah, to be pure, secure, aromatic, and rosy, as he is a witness to the will of Allah, or a living martyr, so destined by Allah Almighty, whose command is irrevocable, praised He be for all He wills and all He wants.

Allah is Great ... Allah is Great ... Allah is Great ...

There is no God but Allah.

Allah is Great ... Allah is Great ... Allah is Great ...

Praise be to Allah

Charge on ... Charge on ... Charge on ...

The dear chant is raised, as if the men are circumambulating around the Ka'ba, or returning to the place from which Prophet Mohammed, the Messenger of Allah, ascended to God on that Blessed Night, after they cleanse the land of Palestine from Zionist desecration.

Allah is Great ... Allah is Great ... Allah is Great ... with millions of gun-barrels, exchanging places on the battle-fronts, or being stationed where they ought to be from the start of the battle until Allah grants His final victory.

Thousands of artillery-guns and tanks and hundreds of aircraft, backed by millions of honorable Arabs and Iraqis and of the faithful who prayed for Iraq to be granted Allah's victory, which the Almighty graced Iraq with.

Saddam Hussien is a scared little bully who doesn't have the means to back up his threats. There's a big difference between post Gulf War Iraq and Nazi Germany.

I don't doubt that he is slightly insane, but a direct threat to the United States, he is not. After the ass kicking Iraq got in the Gulf War and a decade of sanctions and embargos, Iraq doesn't even have the means to invade my living room.

Sanctions and embargos have made Iraq one of the poorest countries in the middle east. Their military has deteriorated to miniscule percentage of what it was pre-gulf war due to lack of funding. They are in no financial position to support terrorist factions.

When the US does attack Iraq, there will be no war.
There will likely be little, to no resistance.

You're awfully gullible.

These are the words of a desparate man.
Iraqis are starving to death.
They are murdered for questioning him.

His only option is to use religion as a tool to garner support from his people.

Much like how Bush has fooled the American people into thinking Saddam Hussein is a direct threat to their freedom.

It might interest you to know that Iraq has the second largest oil reserves or any country in the world.
It might also interest you to know that there are already companies/countries lined up to get back into Iraq to sell off these mass reserves of high grade crude.

Bush has got you so brainwashed that you think Saddam Hussein is part of the 'Axis of Evil' and you're too blind to see that this, once again is all about personal vendettas and oil.

Damn straight. If this thing starts rolling I expect I will be getting my locater call from my IRR liason. I am on Inactive Ready Reserve until 2012 or so. Doubt I would see any action though because I am old and fat to be back up on a roof with a scope and rifle (not my primary job but I have mad skillz). I would definitly take the place of someone getting sent over though. Wonder if I could get them to pay my student loans.

Look man, this kids dad is a retired Command Sergeant Major (E-9) with 26 years of service... not some 10 year E-4 that hit his High Year Tenure and was forced out... he obviously has mad skilz in some necessary career field. They had an open-house going away party for the old fart at the high school where he worked. He shipped off to Ft. Jackson South Carolina on January 3rd.

As for my school costs, yes I am very well aware that I would get my cash back from the school, my point was that I would make it an issue with them to fully understand the impact that my recall was having on my life. I would not be happy, but I sure wouldn't make any efort to evade my service.
This stinks of so much of a lie, anyone who has served knows it is a lie. People that retire except in god awful losing the war concepts are not called back to active duty.
As to your claim that this is a lie... anyone that has served on active duty has worked with a very distinct class of person, exactly the type that you wish you could be, these are the ones that rise above and beyond any expectation of performance... these are the people that are so efficient they make everyone else look bad. These are the ones that are targetted for recall from retirement -- rare indeed, certainly not unheard of. From what I recall being told, there were 11 retirees recalled at this particular time.

As long as we sell the oil that we steal from the Iraqis to Canadians at an inflated rate, I am happy.

I am right wing, but I am still waiting on this magic proof that my President says is out there. Put up or shut up. Frankly it's pissing me off that we are sending all these troops over there even though we have zilch on the guy. If we are going to attack him with no proof, then what was the point of even going through the UN in the first place? At this point it seems like a ploy for a troop buildup in the region. No I am not going liberal, I just need an honorable reason for American blood to be spilled, and revenge is not a reason. Like someone said earlier, if he attacks with no proof, then he won't be re-elected. I won't vote Democrat, but I'll stay at home.

Krim, he's already got a good chunk of Americans believing that there is good reason to attack Iraq. You don't need proof when you have the worlds finest propaganda machine.

He's even got some people believing that Saddam Hussein is the second coming of Adolph Hitler.
