Directory Opus

For anyone that uses Directory Opus, I'm hoping you've experienced the problem I'm having and found (or already know) how to get rid of it..

I like the program a lot (mainly because it supports descript.ion files) but anytime I open a lister in a folder with a lot of sub-folders (like a root folder or the Program Files folder, etc) it seems to take a LONG time between the time when the lister opens and the time it actually starts showing the contents.

I've tried checking things in the setup for things that would be obvious.. turned off that relative size little graph thinking it might help, turned off the 'file type' determination thing, etc.. Anyone have any other solutions for this? It's more an annoyance than anything, but it's enough of one that I'm debating using it at all anymore.

hmmm, I'm a huge fan of Directory Opus and am using version 9 right now. What version are you using?

No problems here with slow listing even with subsdirectories and with directories containing 5,000-10,000 files. I don't use any of the built in viewers though and use "details" as my default viewing format. One thing that totally fucks with Directory Opus is Logitechs horrid setpoint mouse drivers. I had to reinstall Opus after uninstalling those...has to do with the hooks in DOPUS I think.

I'd recommend using FastStone Image viewer and other external viewers for media if you don't already.

I posted my setup awhile back. Very clean that gets rid of all the bloat, but speedy: (be sure to set the name field to autosize!)

Using 9.0.0.4 and also use details view. Only time I get the slowdown is when it seems to be reading the file count for high level folders with lots of stuff to count under it. But I've looked and changed any settings that looked like they would be involved in that. And the only columns I use in details view are Name, Extension, TreeSize, Modified Date and Description. I guess it could potentially be TreeSize, but I didn't have any troubles when using that in normal Explorer.

Maybe dopus is why I keep getting SetPoint errors on reboot..

I am almost positive it's a conflict with DO. Don't blame Directory Opus..setpoint is complete crap...just head over to the Logitech support forums to confirm it.

You may even want to uninstall setpoint to see if it cures the problem.

How big is your directory tree? I don't think mine ever goes more then 4 or 5 deep with 3 levels being more common. I frequently have thousands of images in multiple sub directories with no issue though.

I'm trying to think what else it might be. I seem to be ok using DO to access network drives, etc fast (although the networked drives are slower of course)

It rocks for customization. Makes my life so much easier. I hate the default setup but customized and streamlined as I have it pictured above, it's awesome (for the way I operate).

Its one of those apps that it pays to take the time to customize to your liking. It's the first app I scramble to install after a fresh OS install. The latest version has a nice Backup/Restore so it's easy to reset DOpus to your preferences if you must reinstall an OS instead of restore from Acronis True Image for some reason (when switching motherboards, etc)

newest version you can actually pop onto a USB stick and bring it around with you to use DOpus portably on other machines. costs like 10 bucks extra. pretty slick.
