President Bush named Republican fund-raiser Sam Fox as US ambassador to Belgium yesterday, using a maneuver that allowed him to bypass Congress, where Democrats had derailed Fox's nomination.
Recognizing that Fox did not have the votes to obtain Senate confirmation in the Foreign Relations Committee, Bush withdrew the nomination last week. But yesterday, with the Senate on a one-week break, the president used his power to make recess appointments to put Fox in the job without Senate confirmation.

i guess its been done before but Sam Fox's qualifications as a Republican fundraiser makes it that much worse

Just another shining example of how having different parties in the presidency and senate/congress just leads to a major cockblock festival... Nothing at all of importance is going to get done now for the next year and a half because they are all going to be too busy acting like fucking children.

Now is the time to invest in waffle futures. The long position is the way to go. Let's not forget what happened with the Dutch tulip market!!

It isn't the position that bothers me, it is the fact that Congress found reason to deny the person the position and the President used a loophole to get around that denial. While it was most certainly politics that caused the denial, the President should be held to a higher standard (THE SAME STANDARD!!) than a bunch of whining snots still upset about Al Gore losing (!) the election. I guess the President is just a whining snot like the rest of them. Next election I'm voting for my dog. She whines a lot, but she only does it when she wants to go outside, or wants food, or sometimes just to be pet. And she is certainly more competent than our current President.

And I didn't mean this as a throwback to the Al Gore for President crap. The winner of the election is the person who gets to be President. Al Gore never got to be President because he didn't win the election (cheated or not).

For real. Whatever eggheads came up with the idea of checks and balances should be tried for treason.

That's not what I am saying and you know it. But they are literally playing cockblock right now - and it is not benefiting anyone - I don't see how that can be disputed.

It is just as bad that the congress was blocking his appointment just because he was one of Bush's picks. Both sides are behaving like children, but American politics is so elementary school these days that it is not surprising. I'm surprised that the public puts up with it. But then I remember that were right in the middle of another season of American Idol and the country is distracted.

It's that same stupid attitude that is causing the problems, thanks for the display. Just because the democrats in congress don't like bush doesn't mean you try and cockblock everything that he does just because- they are playing this fucking kiddie game and nothing is going to get done AT ALL, meanwhile you will all still be making "Bush is teh stupid" posts and conveniently ignore the point at hand.

"After a difficult election, we must put politics behind us and work together to make the promise of America available for every one of our citizens.

I am optimistic that we can change the tone in Washington, D.C. "

-Bush, December 13, 2000

Mission accomplished indeed from both sides.

I don't think they are blocking just because Bush supports him, they don't think he is the right guy. Rather than doing what the American people want, Bush is going to do what he wants. Just like he has done time and time again over the past 7 years... which is why we are in the mess we are in right now.

it got more blatant?

From Rush Limb
RL: Now the president has recess appointed him (Ambassador to Belgium), and of course the Democrats say they're going to investigate this and going to look into this. This is the kind of move that garners a lot of support from the people in the country. This shows the administration willing to engage these people, and not allow them to get away with this kind of -- well, my term, you don't have to accept it -- "Stalinist behavior".

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, you're dead on, Rush.

I'm pretty sure a barca lounger would serve as an adequate ambassador to Belgium. A fund raiser for any political party is more than likely canny and charismatic enough to do it.

I think investing in Mannekin Pis bottle openers is a more solid approach with the low-carb/sugar-free trends. And who doesn't love a statuette of a little boy peeing!
