The Lives of Others

Post by Keverian FireCry »

See this movie!! It's a German film that won this years' Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. It also set a record with 11 nominations at the German Film Awards, and won 7 of them including best film, best director, best screenplay, best actor and best supporting actor.

It's a drama/thriller that takes place in Berlin in 1984. It's about a Stasi (East German Secret Police) agent who's ordered to spy on the other main character, a writer that the Stasi feel is influenced to much by the western ideas and needs to be silenced if necessary. Everything about this movie was brilliant.

This is definitely one of the best movies of the year, if not the best. It's also the film debut of the writer/director/producer, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. I can't wait for more from him.

Is it in English or is it sub-titled?

I watched it a couple days ago. It was fairly decent. It was in German with English subtitles.

8.5/10

I'd say this is far above and beyond 'fairly decent'. It's one of the best, most touching and insightful movies I've seen in a long time. It miraculously avoids being preachy but focuses on the persons instead of the ideology. I loved it and would reccommend it to anyone - for me it's a 10 out of 10.

8.5/10 is still a respectable rating!
