also considering just buying 2x 500gb WD My Book Pros...reviews on most 1TB drives have been a real mixed bag of good and bad.

Just out of curiosity... Why not just purchase an enclosure and then put whatever drive you want in it?
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

i've had bad luck with the last two enclosures i've purchased. figured i'd just go the easy no hassle route that has a warranty!

Depends what you want. A NAS TB setup is nice. I always have access to my Terastation from every computer. (as long as the switch/router is turned on of course.) The gigabit speed is nice as well.

There are a bunch of NAS TB offerings out there now. If you don't need the speed or access, I suppose anything will do for storing media.

I'm eying the new TB single HDs coming out in a month or two. The Hitachi is starting off at 399.00 which is a decent price for a brand new best in class product. It might make a 4X750GB option reasonable. The 750's have been on sale for 299.00 (Fry's) which still makes a 3TB option a little pricey but the competition between Hitachi and Seagate for the 1TB drive market should push prices down a little faster now that Seagate has some competition.

The Seagate 7200.10 750's are fast enough to use as an OS drive in the same class as the Raptors although slightly slower. I've been happy with my 320GB 7200.10 Seagate as my OS drive and have had a Raptor in the past for comparison. You could put 2X750's in your PC for 1.5TB probably for 500.00 in the not too distant future and not sacrifice OS/APP loading speeds. Option B would be 1X320GB for 99.00 and a 750 ~299.00 for a 400.00 fast internal TB option.

I'm starting to lean toward less HDs with more storage per HD. It's what Al Gore would want.

You don't have to buy a NAS enclosure with a harddrive. You can get a NAS that's just a chassis and then put in any damn harddrives you want inside.

That's a good reason, Trias.

The main reason I asked is that I like to be able to swap out harddrives in my enclosure when I upgrade my main harddrives. I also have noticed that the price of an 'External Harddrive' usually exceeds the cost of an enclosure and a drive.

I have a nice external SATA/USB drive that I like. At this point I don't have the need for NAS, though that could change.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.
