Another TV thread

Post by Neost »

I hosed my projector completely, broke the damn color wheel. I could get it fixed for about 300 bucks, but I've had a problem with lamps and I'm tired of fighting for a replacement every few months.

I'm pretty sure I'm going back to a TV, for now at least. I've been looking around for the best bang for the buck and I'm thinking rear projection for the next couple of years or so until I start replacing other tv's in the house.

I found a 62" Toshiba DLP rear projection at Tigerdirect.com:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CatId=1830

Input Video Signal NTSC, ATSC

AV-Out

Unit Dimensions (WxHxD) 57.08" x 39.25" x 18.75"

I know its big and will take up some real estate, and at 103 lbs...well, I'll sure need help if I decide to rearrange the furniture. Anyone actually had a chance to see one of these or have any thoughts on it. At 1700 bucks, it doesn't look like a bad deal to me.

I've got the 61" Samsung (love it!) and honestly, it's rather light for its size. (Around same as one you're looking at) I'm more afraid of a cat jumping up on it and making it fall over as they jump off.

The biggest thing I would say is to make sure you want to buy it online. Think about the pita you'll have if you have to send it back or get service for some reason. Who does Tiger sell extended warranties through? Find out, and find opinions on that company if possible. Also find out how you go about returning it if you get it and it's bad. I read lots of horror stories about people who had purchased their sets from Amazon, and the delivery company they contract out to. When I decided to get it from an actual local store, I was debating between Circuit City and Best Buy, and found that there were lots of complaints about Circuit City's extended warranty company. Best Buy also covers the first bulb change in its extended warranty for the same price.

Find the other thread where I was asking about the HLS6187 TV as there were some good links with lots of info posted there.

thanks.

I am a bit concerned about buying it online as opposed to driving over to best buy, but the same tv at best buy is 700-800 bucks more.

Although I don't usually buy extended warranties, this is one of those items that I probably will (the other being a vehicle).

I may just have to bite the bullet and drop the extra cash. Last thing I want is the hassle of having to ship a 100+ lbs TV back to someone, although the shipping is only about 100 bucks. At least that's what it would cost to get it shipped to me, probably a bit more for me to ship it out, being a residential address.

I've heard a lot of bad things about Best Buy's extended warranties too... So I don;t think it matters one way or the other.

One thing I would check if you're going the Best Buy route is to see if the store you buy it from allows warranty exchanges in the store. When I called the company that handles the replacement plans for them, they indicated that not all stores allow you to exchange it at the actual store. They would require that you mail it to the repair center if they don't allow it. The store I use frequently does allow exchanges at the store using the replacement plan though! It's important to actually read the pamphlet they give you. Many allow you to come back and purchase the plan after you've taken the product home. Check to see if the plan states you must ship the product out or not.

if you go to best buy, tell them what you're willing to pay for the tv. i paid $500 less than the retail price for my last tv. also, don't forget that you'll have to pay tax at best buy, whereas you might not with tigerdirect.
