Sometimes I regret having been a PC-Only gamer...

Post by Animalor »

...for the last long while.

I'm discovering now that I had missed out on some truly good console gaming since I skipped out on consoles post-SNES.

Specifically the change to the Castlevania series.

I had picked up FFIII and Metroid Prime Hunters in Mid-December to play on my DS over the holidays on those slow times at my in-laws. Then the day before we leave I'm at Best Buy doing some last minute shopping and decide to pick up Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin for Myself.

I played this exclusively for the entire time we were over there...

Now I'm really looking forward to getting Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on XBLA and playing the shit out of that one.

Console gaming has the storyline advantage over PCs (sans Oblivion) in most cases. Therefore, get RPGs for console. If you're a fan of racing games, they're way better with analog sticks than keyboard buttons. But please, for the love of sanity, don't play a shooter on a console.

I don't know about that. Gears of Wars plays pretty well on a console. I'd prefer playing it using the 360 controller over keyboard for comfort (couch potato) reasons even if the mouse would be more accurate.

I enjoy shooters on both (I own an xbox 360, if I didn't enjoy console shooters I'd be fucked  ) the console and the PC.

Racing games is something I've really grown to like recently as well starting with Forza Motorsport. I picked PGR3 not too long ago and it's fun to play although I tend to prefer outright racing as opposed to various events that need to be completed in order to proceed.

The only genre I would say belong solely on the PC at the moment are RTS's. I tried the demo of Battle for Middle Earth 2 and although they did a good job adapting the controls, it still felt pretty damned clunky.

Any self respecting racing game fan should have an analog wheel and nice set of pedals.

Playing a racing game on a keyboard is as silly as playing a FPS with a gamepad.

Playing an FPS on a console isn't silly. if it was, Gears of War wouldn't have sold 2.7 million copies and Resistance, the "flagship" launch game for the PS3, wouldn't be an FPS.

Xbox 360 sold 10 million+ consoles already with primarily FPS games. (HALO 1/2 did well on the original Xbox)

I agree, Gears is my favorite FPS ever and I think the only thing that will ever top it for me will be Gears 2 & 3, and I have absolutely no complaints about the controls.

Halo has ass sensitivity which is the reason why its berable on console. I still think its overated. I admit thats its done well on Gears.

I'll have to disagree with the RPG on a console statement. Albeit Oblivion was awesome, games like Wizardy 8, Might and Magic series, the TSR Gold Box D&D games, all PC games and some of the best RPG's ever imo.

Racing for sure on console, fighting games on console, FPS on PC!!

For the anal bunch, FPS with your latest Fat0384ltye9049y Keyboard and Mouse is probably best for you.

Halo on the PC was better IMO. It has more to do with how the game designer handles things. GoW should help with future console FPS games.

That is because the hit box in GoW extends approximately a billion miles out from every enemy to compensate for console gamer's lack of accuracy and shitty controls. It is almost impossible to miss anything in that game. Halo is the same way. You actually have to try to miss anything.

Yeah, that's one massive hit-box when not using the scope/zoom view. It took me a while to realize that I could shoot within five or six feet of my target and still hit it.

I wouldn't care if the entire screen was the hit box if the game is fun to play. GoW was fun to play.

It wasn't meant to be a twitch, high accuracy game for the hyperactive headshot kewl kids. It was meant to be a fun, immersive game. Mission accomplished! Let's roll. PS3's suck. Apple products are overpriced. Vanguard is so bad it makes WoW look like a good game.

Who said Gears of War sucked? The hit box makes it more forgiving for console play which is one reason it did so well. Play games on the PC that are also available on consoles and you will generally be much more accurate (as discussed in numerous other threads here before). They did an excellent job with Gears of War for a console.

I wholly agree! I played that for a loooong time. And, appropriately considering the M+KB goodness, it wasn't possible to shoot somebody while missing them by 5 feet, as it's been said it is for the console version.

I'm really curious to see how they'll pull off Shadowrun on Live anywhere.

Anyone who can't play FPS's on a console is fucking gay.
Anyone who thinks Gears of War suddenly invented a way of making FPS on consoles playable is double gay on toast.

I used to headshot bitches with with a magnum in GoldenEye back home. . .they're not much bigger than 2 meters.^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H.

GoldenEye/Perfect Dark
Time Crisis
Gears
GRAW
The list is long but they're all great console FPS games. Yeah you can't rocket jump, bunny hop, or spin 1360 degrees by tweaking your mouse a nanometer in either direction. But so fucking what? If you think KB+Mouse FPS games are better for allowing this kind of crap, well guess what? GAY!

:P

My thoughts are Tanc's thoughts. People who play console FPS's competitively are the 2nd most pathetic creatures on the planet, next to people who keyboard-turn in WoW and click all their action buttons.

gears of war and halo look nice but theyre way too easy in general from that hitbox/autoaim shit...

still fun to play but theyre both more like youre watching a movie with the illusion of interactivity

I have yet to personally witness this shooting someone 5 feet off nonsense everyone is talking about.. Yeah with the shotgun, but thats because the pellets don't go to one concentrated dot, which is accurate. I have not once got a kill in Gears when my cursor wasn't on my target.

Edit: And all of the auto aim cheats I have ever seen that have greatly ruined a game for me have been on fps's on the pc.

I'v always been a PC+console gamer so I find intra-nerd prejudices laughable and irritating. Y'know like how the rest of the gaming world likes to look down on MMO-players as some kind of subspecies.
Pretending that one flavour of FPS involves more "skill" or makes you more "sexah" than another is just ridiculous.

Then the day before we leave I'm at Best Buy doing some last minute shopping and decide to pick up Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin for Myself.

I played this exclusively for the entire time we were over there...
I picked this up a couple days ago, and I've since put in the most hours on this game than any of my other DS games. I'm really enjoying it. BUT...my neck hurts after an hour or so!

I'm a big fat guy, but getting sore from playing a hand-held game just doesn't seem right. I try all different positions; sitting up, laying down, on my side, standing, etc. Nothing is quite right for long periods. I would like to design a support device.

I imagine a type of massage-bed design, where my head would be supported while my face is exposed. It could include arm wrests, or just prop up my chest while on the floor. Christ I'm lazy.

I just tend to change position every 10-15 minutes to something different and take a break somewhere between the 1-2 hour mark to stretch out.

The sole thing that bugs me about the DS Lite is the hand cramps cuase it's so freaking small.

I saw something for handheld gamers a couple days ago but now I don't remember where. It looked like a pillow sorta thing that rested under your chin for support. No telling how effective it was!

HAH! That's a start.

Anyone ever try one of those Sumo bags (http://www.sumolounge.com/)? I've wondered if they hold their shape as well as they claim. That could be used to form a nice support area for all kinds of leisure. Reading comics for hours can cause neck pain too!

I got one for my sister. Yes it does hold form very well. Her boyfriend loves it for playing games. Careful, the things are huge.
