Bollywood recommendations

Post by Lalanae »

Netflix appears to be expanding their sellection of films from Bollywood. Can anyone recommend a couple of the better films, with a short description? I love old American musicals, so the song/dance routines in many of them wouldn't be a turn off I suspect.

I haven't seen that many, but I remember a few:

"Black" was pretty good. It's loosely based on the story of Helen Keller - young blind and deaf girl meets eccentric semi-alcoholic teacher who sees his own salvation in teaching her. It won a load of awards, if I'm not mistaken.

"Maqbool" (I think it was called, spelling might be off) is a Bollywood-ized version of Macbeth, very interesting to watch.

I've also heard good stuff about Parineeta and Monsoon Wedding, they got pretty good reviews when they showed here, as did a few others I'll try and find.

Oh, and Lagaan was awesome, in a kinda campy way. The cinematography and the score were really impressive - and how can you not like a romantic-historic-anti-imperialistic movie that lets a game of cricket (between English colonialists and poor villagers of India) decide the outcome of a whole people?

Saw Monsoon Wedding and I really liked it. Made me consider having an Indian-style wedding. So much prettier than American weddings!

The Terrorist is still one of the best movies I have ever seen, thanks for reminding me of it.

No, just mentioned that I'm not opposed to musicals (some people hate them)
