Science Hour: Eternal Turtles

Post by Winnow »

I didn't know turtles lived so long! 250 years? damn. I'd stick to a diet of leaves if I could have organs that don't break down or become less efficient over time.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/12/scien ... ref=slogin
With its miserly metabolism and tranquil temperament, its capacity to forgo food and drink for months at a time, its redwood burl of a body shield, so well engineered it can withstand the impact of a stampeding wildebeest, the turtle is one of the longest-lived creatures Earth has known. Individual turtles can survive for centuries, bearing silent witness to epic swaths of human swagger. Last March, a giant tortoise named Adwaita said to be as old as 250 years died in a Calcutta zoo, having been taken to India by British sailors, records suggest, during the reign of King George II. In June, newspapers around the world noted the passing of Harriet, a Galapagos tortoise that died in the Australia Zoo at age 176 — 171 years after Charles Darwin is said, perhaps apocryphally, to have plucked her from her equatorial home.

Behind such biblical longevity is the turtle’s stubborn refusal to senesce — to grow old. Don’t be fooled by the wrinkles, the halting gait and the rheumy gaze. Researchers lately have been astonished to discover that in contrast to nearly every other animal studied, a turtle’s organs do not gradually break down or become less efficient over time.

Now we just need to study them and copy their genes onto people. Then we can have mutant turtlepeople who live forever. They could then learn martial arts, eat lots of pizza, and fight crime.

Give it twenty years and we very well could be immortal. Geneticists understand what makes us age already. They just have to find a way to rejuvenate the body's cells so that they don't have a limited amount of reproductions. Right now each cell in your body can produce only a certain amount of times before it is gone. Cancer cells don't have that problem. If we can figure that out and reproduce it in healthy cells then theoretically we would not grow old. I think we could have something in the next couple decades.

Great, I'll be stuck looking like an old geezer. I suppose the next question after finding a way to stop age is what age to stop at? 21? 27?

100 year old's running around looking like 17 year olds could be trouble in the grand scheme of legal "age".

Yeah, I'm counting on that. Thats why I'm going to go to med school. I figure that if I am a surgeon and I am rich, I will be one of the first immortals! Or at least live to like 150 or so. That would be cool. The only problem I see is they have to find a way to keep the brain fresh and alive. Alzheimers is scary shit.

People being able to live to be 150... God, can you think of all the problems that will cause? You'll never stop people from spewing out herds of children, so in a couple generations, what kind of burden will that overpopulation cause? Sounds like a nightmare to me.

And not only will they not stop having babies but they won't die to make room for 'em...

On the other side of the coin...who the fuck wants to live forever?

Going from Engineering to Med School? That's an interesting transition. What sort of engineering are you doing?
