Bully, Final Fantasy XII, GTR II, Football Manager 2007, and finally, The end of the world game.
What am I supposed to do?! I already have my money saved all up for Medieval II. Grar.

With the reviews FFXII is getting on Metacritic, I'm going to have to drag my PS2 out one last time. Looks great.

Ever see the shipping commercial where one guy suggests they use FedEx and gets no reaction from the meeting attendees and then another guy suggests the exact same thing with different hand gesture movements and the motion passes?Leonaerd wrote:I linked that in my original post, goober.Winnow wrote:With the reviews FFXII is getting on Metacritic, I'm going to have to drag my PS2 out one last time. It's a great commercial. I can't find a link to the commercial. Anyone know the commercial I'm talking about and have a link?
Hmmm, I thought FFX was one of the best games ever made. I was totally engrossed in the storyline and enjoyed developing the characters and the battle engine. Loved it. No biggie on difference of opinion of these type games though. I can see why someone might dislike it as well.Funkmasterr wrote:I was thinking that same thing Winnow, I wasn't impressed with ff10 at all, but this one is looking really good. I think I want to try and play that shooter game that is based in Midgar (from ff7) but I can't remember the name.

I would say FF8 and 10 in my opinion were a shit stain in the underwear of the franchise.
My favorites are probably 3, 7 and 9.
On a side note, I read an interview with the guy in charge at Square/Enix and they are apparently talking about making a console for the next round.
And I have seen that commercial Winnow, it's pretty funny. "Yeah, but I did this *makes chopping motion with hand*"

For once, we are in total agreement. I've owned FFX for about 2 years now and still haven't bothered to complete this stain. I think I'm close to finishing it. Also, in 2 years, I've yet to pop in FFX-2.Funkmasterr wrote:I would say FF8 and 10 in my opinion were a shit stain in the underwear of the franchise.

I bought FF4 Advance about 3 months ago and played through it on my DS Lite. Talk about a game standing the test of time. I enjoyed it as much this playthrough than I did the first time through. I havta go get FF6 Advance and get FFIII for DS soonish.

Yeah the draw system was bullshit. I didn't really bother with it for the first few bosses so I was totally fucked for the entire game not having their talents.Dregor Thule wrote:FFX was great IMO. Nice, it's always good to see a commercial that makes me chuckle. It doesn't seem to happen too frequently anymore.
The draw system was so good for the micromanaging type player. Before the third CD, my Squall already had 255 innate speed, even with no special magic junctioned. I could barely even blink before his bar was back up. FFVII and FFIX in no way made it so that effort in = reward out.Funkmasterr wrote:Yeah the draw system was bullshit. FFX was similar to FFVIII in that you could get kickass modifications to the sphere grid and boost the hell out of your innate stats. Yuna was so good at summoning that by the time I fought the dudes in the Monster Arena (for the hardcore guy), Bahamut was hitting for 120,000 a hit (with his strength of 150 or so). Even so, it was still tough as hell to beat all the baddies there.
So yeah, for me FFX and FFVIII were my favorites (though I still immensely enjoyed VII and IX), because the micromanager was duly rewarded. X > VIII because there was actually a worthy side-area (Monster Arena) dedicated to the hardcore dude. in VIII all you could do was annihilate Omega Weapon, but it was still fun.

I grabbed FFXII at lunch for $37 at Fry's Electronics. The Neverwinter Nights 2 shipment hadn't arrived yet. Bummer. I'm looking forward to NWK2 but FFXII should keep me busy for around...2 years at the pace I play video games.
Won't be able to play much until Thursday though. The Suns are in action the next two nights. Don't forget to watch!

I didn't know that there was a NWN2 until I bought a game at Gamestop the other day and got my GI magazines. I liked the first one a lot, and Fash had some fun worlds he created, that was the best part of the game I think.
I thought I had sworn my computer off for a long time for games, but I might be forced to try NWN 2.

The article I read said it takes a good six hours of gameplay for FXII to kick into high gear (slow start) so I plan to hang with it for at least that long to make sure even if I'm not liking it for some reason.Dregor Thule wrote:FF XII is pretty good so far. The license system is a lot like the sphere grid from X, but a lot more open. Only 6 characters is poop, but it'll do. Haven't gotten a 2nd party member yet, so can't comment on the automated actions of your party or the gambit system.

The Aurora Toolset for NWN was the main reason for that game's massive popularity and longevity. The mod community for NWN is still thriving.Winnow wrote:Nope.miir wrote:Not really familiar with NWN are you?The game designer for homemade adventures looks great.
To ship NWN2 without a comparable toolset would be like shooting themselevs in the foot.

I have been awaiting NWN2 for some time because of the toolset. I used to play NWN religiously, because every time I joined a custom server, it was a new adventure. People who designed their own maps would run the map as a DM, and the few players who joined would be put inside a new storyline and were able to run free. It was a blast.
I downloaded the NWN2 pre-order toolset last night. It looks awesome if you take the time to learn it. Highly polished.
I remember the old Dungeon Construction Set days on the C-64. You couldn't do much. If you're into gaming and wish to take the time to create an adventure for your friends, the NWN2 toolset will allow you to make a very professional looking world. I don't have the time or desire to do so, but applaud Bioware for their efforts and look forward to eventually running around in some player created levels in NWN2.

I was searching around the newsgroups for Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 for the 360 last night. It's going to be a big disappointment. It's hard to screw up a game designed purely around looking at hot toons in bikinis but Team Ninja managed to do just that.
DOAX2 is almost the exact same game...same volleyball courts, many of the same swimsuits, same casino games, many of the same side games with only a few lame new side games added to the mix....and many of the same songs...wtf...how cheap can a developer be? This game wasn't rushed for 360's launch or anything, it's out a year later and is basically the old DOAX with upgraded graphics.
It seems Team Ninja spent their entire budget on boob physics which looks a little strange in the preview movies anyway so isn't necessarily an upgrade.
The original DOAX was great in its undisguised focus on pretty graphic settings and women with very light, easy games along with a social strategy game mixed in.
This game is getting killed in reviews for good reason. Not because it's meant to be pure eye candy, but because Team Ninja was unbelievably lazy and uncreative in providing any sort of changes to the 3-4 year old DOAX game. The background settings for the volleyball courts are exactly the same. The soundtrack for DOAX rocked but I don't want to hear it again in a new game. lame lame.

On the other hand, I did find History Channel: Civil War for the 360 last night and I was quite surprised at how much fun it was.
It's a first person shooter set during the American Civil War (Canadians should have fun killing Amercans whether they choose to play the South or the North). Unlike most of the current shooters, this game has some character to it.
The weapons are civil war era so you can't always go shooting machine gun style. You need to reload, and that takes awhile if you have one of the old muskets which gets interesting when a Rebel is running at you. There are revolver type rifles that have several shots and gatling guns, etc to make things interesting. You get into a lot of hand to hand combat and the controls make it easy to use your rifle or sword in close combat. The aiming system is pretty forgiving which make long range shot less frustrating.
The graphics are outstanding on the 360 version (this game is available on most platforms). Audio is nice as well if you have surround sound. I was playing it on my main home theater so the battle cries and sounds of war were well placed.
The health meter is pretty forgiving and recovers fast so you can enjoy playing without dying all the time. If you rush a gatling gun position you're not going to last long though. When close to cannons and Gatling guns, you can use them which is quite fun when a wave of Rebels (or Yankees) is coming at you. Mow'em down!
The Civil War atmosphere is well done. I don't know how well the game holds up over time as with most games I download, I reach the 20 or 30 minute mark and that's it for the game. I made it to 30 minutes on this one so I give it a thumbs up!
Being backed by the History Channel, the game deals with 10 real battles from the Civil War era...it may be 20 total. ten where you play the Yanks and 10 as the Rebels (where your side is supposed to win I guess)

Miir, a buddy of mine created a shard with entire quest structures, two different alignments, and arching storylines for both sides. It was persistent, and we had quite a few players for a period of time. It was like a mini-MMO, and it was a blast. I was on a first name basis with all of the players, and for a few months, I preferred NWN to any MMO on the market. To truly be adaptive though, you need a bunch of people on staff to DM and create new quests in order for the world to have the dynamic feel that we got spoiled on in MMOs.
Nothing is more fun that having a bunch of players working against each other, all under the watchful eye of a DM.
