The Wired article on the PS3 and Sony's big gamble.
I thought this was a great, very non-biased read. I doesn't really give and new information but it delivers a point of view that's different from rampant fanboism that this subject usually dredges up.

THe PS3 is getting less powerful while expectations for any kind of substantial quantity for launch a year after 360 hit the shelves is looking like it won't happen. There weren't a whole lot of 360's last year in Nov but there are plenty for consumers to gobble up this time.
Should be a great Christmas for Wii and 360!
Saints Row and Enchanted Arms Arrive in stores for the 360 today. Decent games for the 360 are rolling in on a steady basis from here on out. Several more coming out over next month.

http://www.slashgear.com/more-bad-ps3-n ... 291261.phpSony has had to hack away at one of the upcoming console’s key features; the GPU clock speeds. NVIDIA’s RSX graphics processor, which was originally set to run at 550 MHz (for the processor) and 700 MHz (for the memory), has seen its speed cut down to 500/650, representing an 8% drop in the GPU’s overall speed. While, at first glance, this drop seems negligible, it’s just one more thing bringing down the power of Sony’s new “super” console.
When the PS3 was first announced, Sony bragged about how much raw horsepower the machine would be capable of. However, with the graphics processor now running at lower-than-expected frequencies and developers complaining about how difficult and expensive PS3 programming can be, it’s looking like the new PlayStation might not have the colossal lead over the Xbox 360 that many are expecting. If the games and the hardware don’t impress, people are going to balk at paying up to $200 extra just for high-definition DVDs. (Yes, I know the Xbox 360 has its own HD-DVD addon for $200, but it is possible to buy an Xbox 360 without it) Sony, here’s to hoping that the TGS game show goes better than these last few months have.
http://www.hardocp.com/news.html?news=M ... V3cywsLDE=Analyst Predict PS3 Shortage
According to a recent report, the Japanese brokerage Mitsubishi UJF Securities is predicting that Sony will be unable to deliver enough consoles at launch by as much as 50%. Sony’s stock dropped 3% on the news.
Masahiko Ishino, Mitsubishi UFJ Securities analyst wrote in the report: “In the medium term this would mean that it would take longer for Sony to recover its huge investment in PS3 and thus we are downgrading the stock.”
With the PS3 not even in production yet, it isn’t hard to imagine Sony falling short of the 2 million units it promised for launch day. If the console went into production today, they’d need to make something like 30,000 consoles a day to meet that 2 million number.

Another thing that won't help Sony.

Only 30% yield on the laser? That's asysmal to say the least.Nichia, which currently holds 80% of the global blue laser diode supply, reported that its yield rate for blue laser diodes reached 30%, according to the makers.

Not that I could see them actually doing it, but how much would they stand to lose if they immediately backtracked to use a "normal" drive? Didn't I read that the developers are not actually doing programming specifically for Blu-Ray?Animalor wrote:Another thing that won't help Sony.

Resistance: Fall of Man, a future PS3 game, is supposed to be 22 GB in size so they can't go back to a DVD9 drive without screwing up that bloated game.Boogahz wrote: Not that I could see them actually doing it, but how much would they stand to lose if they immediately backtracked to use a "normal" drive? Yeah, that would cause a slight hitch.Winnow wrote:Resistance: Fall of Man, a future PS3 game, is supposed to be 22 GB in size so they can't go back to a DVD9 drive without screwing up that bloated game.Boogahz wrote: Not that I could see them actually doing it, but how much would they stand to lose if they immediately backtracked to use a "normal" drive? Well all they would need to do is actually attempt to use compression or cutting back their FMV's to 720p instead of 1080p.Boogahz wrote:Yeah, that would cause a slight hitch.Winnow wrote:Resistance: Fall of Man, a future PS3 game, is supposed to be 22 GB in size so they can't go back to a DVD9 drive without screwing up that bloated game.Boogahz wrote: Not that I could see them actually doing it, but how much would they stand to lose if they immediately backtracked to use a "normal" drive? Just vomiting uncompressed high-def textures on a BD isn't exactly high-tech.
The general consumer doesn't realize that. They see a 22GB game and wet their pants. PS3 has one of the most powerful processors around so a highly compressed (and better) codec wouldn't matter. It's the same deal with mpeg2 vs VC-1. VC-1 is better and requires less space but people drool over Blu Ray's extra storage space instead of worrying about the quality of the picture.Animalor wrote:

That's really sad to hear. This is why I detest corporate greed. The 360 was rushed to market and it looks like the PS3 is going to be even worse.
I do however believe Kaz's quote to be truth: "The next generation doesn't start until we say it does!"
If they take their time and do this right I feel that the PS3 could ultimately put the 360 to shame.
I feel that nothing in the current 360 game library qualifies to be called next generation.

are you joking? even a fucking retarded fanboy troll like you can't look at a ps3 game like heavenly sword, resistance or mgs4 and see a ridiculous difference. xbox 360 games look alright, but the difference between that and ps3 games I've seen makes xbox 360 titles look like ps2.
although I am not even sure why I waste my time debating it with someone of the likes of you. incoming 900 unlinked articles from xbox fan sites!

I'm glad you like watching movie previews of games. Hell, even Ninety-Nine Nights looked good in the rendered movie preview. You've seen zero PS3 games. The real playable PS3 games so far were the boring ones at E3.kyoukan wrote:xbox 360 games look alright, but the difference between that and ps3 games I've seen makes xbox 360 titles look like ps2.
It's a given that whatever Sony pisses out, kyoukan will be there to swallow up but man, you've got to try and not be such an obvious fan-thing for them.
We'll see how it goes when the Sony actually gets around to releasing the PS3 and there are actual consoles and games to play on it. In the meantime, Microsoft is right on schedule, releasing better and better games with a year headstart and easier platform to make games for.
yeah I'm a real sony fan.
I just find your moronic fantard trolling stupid and annoying. what fucking video game company would give a shit what you think anyway, you deadbeat pirate? maybe if you paid for something once in awhile your opinion might matter. the only reason you even have a preference is because xbox's are so poorly made and easy to hack so you can play your downloadz.

Of course I can only go off of movies and can't say for sure until the ps3 is acutally out, but that's what I think.
