Went and saw this tonight, and although my skills at writing a review may not be as refined as others, I figured I'd make the post.
I thought the movie was really good. I always think that having actors that are not well known in a horror movie is a good thing, which was no different here.
In my opinion, for a horror flick it was a good storyline, and I thought it was scary. I'm generally not jumpy, but I did jump a few times during this movie.
I was a bit afraid for the movie with the claims that they were making about it being "the best horror movie since Alien", and while I am not sure if I would say that, I would definately recommend seeing it if you like horror flicks.

Saw this today @ lunch.
Basically, I think it is the most original horror movie since Event Horizon and as tense and scary as the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. I can see the comparisons to Alien on a vague scale, but Alien was just flatout crazy for horror in 1979-- vague I said, let's not get all crazy and split hairs.
Let's face it--most of what passes for horror genre these days is formulaic and focuses on jumpy/gross out ways to die (re: final destination, saw, etc.).
The Descent is actually a well-made film, not only in conveying the feeling of being trapped in a dark fucking cave, but how the characters interact and develop, despite not going overly long on character background. It is a simple story and doesn't try to be fancy. It scares out of sheer intensity and that same conveyance of helplessness.
The lighting, diegeses and acting are all well done. I think the director and director of photography were pretty fucking spot-on as well (LOVED crane shot of Appalachian HWY road thing). I really think they nailed it with this one. Granted that I am a fan of the genre and really liked Marshall's previous film, Dog Soldiers, I am very pleased by this work.
5/5 eye-gouging-happy-points and I will most likely never ever set foot in a fucking cave. I had the same feeling about the ocean after seeing Jaws, although it passed at some point.
PS: I was a bit worried that it would have that 'motion sickness' blair witch project camerawork. It did not, so no need for Dramamine.

ugh i almost barfed during this movie, because of all the really good detailing to the gore, i thought it was very scary and good acting, could have used some tits at the beginning, hot chicks in it too, sucked to see them "die" also kinda funny that it takes place in my state not more than an hour or so from me

Sweet Fancy Moses, I'm about halfway through watching this for the first time. It's pitch black in my house and I'm all alone. It's kind of frightening!
If only Holly had listened and not gone running off ahead.

Re: The Descent
Okay, that was pretty good, I liked it.
I thought it was much less scary after the crawlers were out in the open. And I can't believe that Sarah did Juno like that, but I guess I can see why she did.
