the great PVP mage debate

Post by Xzion »

fire or ice?

I know on my server the PVP mages are almost split down the middle with fire or ice, each claiming that his spec is superior in PVP (as an ice mage, I of course know I am right 8) )
Both have their advantages but it seems like a fire mage only has one true tactic…sheep and nuke, if for whatever reason that fails they are like a weak defenseless little kitten

Granted ice mages don’t do as much damage as our fire rivals, we can get off quicker damage and outlive a lot of good melee’ers VIA my 900 point shield which I can activate 3x in a row if need be with cold snap up…also most see ice block as only a means to delay death, but its great for clearing off DOTs, fear, sheep, or pretty much any negative spell effects, plus a good 2 instant casts followed by ice block while waiting for their recharge often ends in a very dead opponent =P

One on one there is no question a good ice mage can obliterate a fire one, if we get sheeped, simply ice block as we laugh and deactivate it followed by a counterspell to the fire mage’s 7 second casting spell, leaving them 100% defenseless and ready to die, often without even taking one hit

Still, if I fire mage catches ANY class off guard, they are pretty much fucked

Either way it’s a huge debate on my server and I might as well bring it to VV

im fire and i do pretty well. its pretty easy though, just sit back, wait for the one guy to stray from the mob and pick him off. ive taken down every class with ease, and i rarely have to use sheep. i can ice block just as easy as an ice mage so there is no real advantage there.

also its really easy to use fire blast to steal killing blows.

so if you are into getting killing blows, fire is way better, but if youre going for the good of the team then ice might be the way to go.

last night for instance, i was in 4 pvp instances (all warsong) and led kills each time.

frost is much better for battlegrounds (-AV) and duels. Fire for world PVP and AV

whichever is more important to you.

Ice gives you survivability (ice block, ice shield), plus with all the added slowing and movement stopping bonuses of ice, it makes it harder for melee classes to be a threat.
Ice also has the highest crit damage, with an increase of 100% due to Shards.

Fire however is superior in offense, and now that Pryo is no longer on a cooldown it can be much more deadly. Incinerate also gives a nice bit of extra damage (say 400dmg+)

I myself am Ice, i do alright and dont seem to have much in the way of problems with anyone save for priests/warlocks (surprise!1)

I do know a fire mage who can kill a priest or a warlock easily, if his tactic pays off and poly holds. Poly, Arcane power, pryo, PoM pryo again, usually hitting for around 4-6k in total with a wee fireblast tossed in at the end.
It could be that the only purpose for your every existence, is to serve as a warning to others.

Post some builds! :p

I have actually been messing around with alts, and I had never tried Frost until after the recent changes.

Haven't played wow in a month or so but I quit just after the mage update - I had a mixture of fire/ice (31/20).

Before the update I would say that ice is better for pvp, if for no other reason than the shorter casting time of frostbolt (half a second is the difference between winning and dying sometimes) and with enough +dmg gear you can get seriously sick crits from Frost alone. (with a mix of mc/bwl/aq and zg loot that is).

Fire is cool if your sitting back picking things off, but that's a boring way to pvp and next to useless in one on one in comparison to frost.

With the new update, I found the fire/frost mix to be perfect and a huge dps upgrade overall (and a more interesting playstyle).

So in conclusion, fire 31 frost 20 for maximum fire and frost dps with ice block thrown in for good measure - not that it's as amazing as people make it out to be, although maybe i'm just too lazy to press it sometimes when I'm kamikaze aoeing .

I may head back and play again if I could be bothered, but my guild migrated and became full of retards, so I doubt I'll end up seeing the inside of Naxx.

while theyre dots can fuck you up at the wrong time, i generally have no problem killing warlocks at all. freeze the pet and waste the lock in 2-3 shots. normally the warlock always casts some curse dot that i can get rid of easily then usually get stuck with 1 or 2 dots on me that i can usually live through (eating lots of bread in the meantime).

I don't even know why you got involved. You're not a great pvp mage.

its fully possible with pretty gimp gear and a trinket to get 3k+ fb crits and even more if you have berserking.
im also a huge target on my server so probably get hit with more frostbolts than you cast on an avg day :( :(
