smart appliances

Post by Syenye »

while the majority of you think i'm a paranoid conspiracy theorist (and i might still be), smart appliances are here:
http://www.networkworld.com/community/?q=node/6348
Laundry Time, an eight-week pilot program from the Internet Home Alliance, will eventually include nine families and feature the technology and services of Microsoft, HP, Panasonic, Proctor & Gamble and Whirlpool.
looks like i even got the tide detergent example right (which is more about being a former proctoid, crazy brand loyalty).

Laundry Time's high-tech vision: "You decide to do your laundry while the family is watching TV. After you start the washer (the system will allow you to implement the process remotely), you relax in front of the TV. Thirty minutes later, an alert pops up on your TV screen saying, “Wash Complete,” so you put the load in the dryer and put another load in the washer. You get a similar alert on your TV when the dryer is done, so you never forget about your laundry and can fold your clothes before they get wrinkled."
...
Laundry Time's high-tech vision: "You settle down to do some Web surfing after a busy day. When you start up your browser, you get an Instant Message alert telling you that the dryer did not start its cycle. You realize that you forgot to press the start button. Laundry Time asks you in the IM whether you would like to start the cycle. With your mouse, you select “yes,” which starts the dryer, and you continue Web surfing without interruption."
...
Laundry Time's high-tech vision: "While running errands, you get an alert on your cell phone that the dryer is done. You don’t want your clothes to sit in the dryer and wrinkle so you use a key on your cell phone to tell the dryer to 'fluff' the load for an additional 15 minutes, the time it will take you to finish your errands and return home."
While some smart appliances may be a good idea... Applying it to washing and drying clothes is just lazy and dumb. And a waste of money.

That's exactly why it will do well in America. I'm amazed at some of the stupid shit I see people do with the new houses being built around here.

The one that cracks me up is the TV built into the door of the fridge.

When I was building a house a few years back, as I was picking out appliances the sales person asked if I wanted to upgrade to the microwave with the personal organizer built in.
WTF is that crap?

Hey would you like to get together for lunch next week?
Umm let me check my microwave to see if I am free.

I like this idea. I don't know how many times I've started laundry and then forgotten to check it until hours later because I got into playing video games or watching TV or a movie or something. Plus I hate getting wrinkles.

All you naysayers will get on the bandwagon once they all have this functionality!

I've invested in a dumb appliance called an iron. Works wonders in defeating the enemy known as wrinkles.

They've been mentioned for over 10 years. I don't see how it is breaking news or tied to the XBox 360. I remember reading about the concepts in High School.

I never learned how to iron. :( I do have a steamer though. That said, what if you had a smart iron that could notify you if it had been on for a long time and ask if you want it to shut down. Or one that you could heat up remotely. Yeah, I know that some of the dumb ones already have auto shutoff, I'm just saying that I welcome our robot overlords.

Breaking news might be when the concepts are realized into actual products? I don't see anyone talking about the 360 anywhere in this thread!

That's why I mentioned reading it many years ago. This was part of the vision of Bill Gates for a long time. He wanted a "world" where all "appliances" worked together in a smart way. It could range from lighting automatically dimming or turning off to conserve power when rooms emtpy to blinds closing to avoid letting in too much heat when the AC is working during the summer. I don't believe that the 360 is doing this type of "data-gathering" though.

Just toss whatever you need to be wrinkle-free in the dryer for 10 minutes. Works well as long as its not a really really bad case

That's what the buzzer is for, silly. My washer and dryer have buzzer settings so loud, I can hear them go off when I'm outside mowing the lawn with my mp3 player on the highest volume. While that may be a slight exaggeration, it's not far from the truth!

I "iron by dryer" as well. The damp towel that Winnow suggested is also a useful hint. Also, when I'm in a hotel, I hang my shirt in the bathroom while a take a hot shower so it can get zapped with a bit of steam.
